WHFS FROM APRIL 1985 SHARED BY JOSH

Here is another WHFS Post shared again by Josh! Looks like an awesome set list for sure. I do remember the late Friday afternoon Party weekend rundown, but can't recall the artist Josh is looking for. If I recall I'll post it. In the meantime, can any HFS Heads help us out?
Having Josh share his HFS tapes form 1985 is a real treat for me. One of the reasons that I have posted so many from 1983, is (1) it was announced that WHFS @ 102.3FM would be closing down. And (2) I had a job with days off during the week, and would do some excellent taping in the morning and afternoon. In 1985 WHFS was now @ 99.1FM and broadcasting with 50k watts. That same year, I got a job working M-F 8:30-5:00 and that was it for me taping in the afternoon. I did have a portable Sony Boom box and listened to WHFS all day everyday. It wasn't surprising how many people I worked with never heard the station before. I did do a tape or two on my portable but the quality is not so hot.

Below is the e-mail from Josh:

"Some more HFS tunes from Spring '85 and another request for help

Weasel and Bob had a weekend set they played every Friday. It was:

Dave Edmunds-Here Comes the Weekend
Joe King Carrasco--Party Party Weekend

And a third tune:

Well I go to school from 9 to 3
Every chance I get
They try to teach me the golden rule
But I ain't learned nothing yet

Thanks God it's Friday
Lord, I'm here to say
Thank God it's Friday
Lord, it's been a long long day

WHO DOES THIS?

Also on this:
Blondie
Love Tractor
Thomas Dolby
Malcolm Mclaren
Lowell George
Wall of Voodoo
Talking Heads
The DBs
The Monks
Blotto
The Elevators
Joe King Carrasco
Martha and the Muffins
B-52s
Julie Brown
Aztec Camera
Trio
Lou Reed
Nick Lowe
The Bangles
The Who
Tears for Fears
T-Bone Burnett

Enjoy, more to come."

Thanks again Josh. This is a real treat for me and anyone else out there that remembers quality radio.
Now if I could only find my "Is There Music After WHFS T-shirt".

Great, great song.

Ah yes, the 'Frantic Friday' closing set by Weasel... usually went along these lines:
- Switchblade -- she makes me rock too much
- Flirts -- we just wanna dance
- Duane Eddy -- wild weekend
- Dave Edmonds -- here comes the weekend
- Joe King -- party weekend

I know exactly the 'TGIF' song you asked about, but can't recall the artist. Beastie Boys (Fight For Your Right) and an Eddie Cochran song would wlso make appearances. Terrific memories!

That was "Thank God, It's Friday" by Harbison, Bond & Goddard, a local band that had gigs at several bars in the area (mostly in NW and Northern Virginia). It may have been their only single. Harbison, the writer and lead singer on the song, told me it was really a "joke" of a song. His other songs were really much better.

Their gigs were a great way to spend a Friday or Saturday night. The group split and got back together a few times. The "Bond" is Jack Bond who did a lot of gigs as the Jack Bond Group. Brian Goddard was a first-rate bassist.

By the way, that was "Eat my lunch at Sears" (on Wisconsin Avenue). Not a power lunch.

Thank you Flyte123

I figured it was a local band, since there was no evidence of it in all the normal places.

Thanks for the awesome feeback and the Frantic Friday comments.

Up to you, but you may want to update the entry in the blog.

I googled all three of the main members of the group: They are all still active in the DC music scene.
John Harbison hosts open mikes (a shame because he is a very good songwriter, apart from the novelty song), Jack Bond does gigs in the area (also a good songwriter), and Brian Goddard anchors the bass in a local group.
Sadly, I can't enjoy any of your tapes (HFS was my station since I was a college freshman in 1969, when Cerphe was still on board) because you uploaded them to Megaupload, which requires the installation of their spyware in order to download from them from the country where I am residing.
I hope you'll choose another service and higher bitrates for these wonderful recordings.

don't know about the spyware issue. I use MU because the files are over 100MB and I have a premium acount, and it seems to be a very common file storage service. Rabidshare is another very common service and I use them for files smaller than 100MB. sorry about the low bitrates, but that's how I ripped them to my hard drive(and in this case how Josh shared them with me)and I'm not going back to the open reels and cassettes anytime soon to re-ripp everything. All this that I have shared was ripped from my personal Tape/LP/CD collection way before I started this blog and decided to share my music collection of 30 years. I use WMA files because they are of the same quality as MP3 at 1/2 the file size. They sound fine to my 49 year old year old ears when playing in the van or my WMA/MP3 players. Most would agree that the bitrates are good enough to enjoy and share recordings that are up to 30 years old. I see feedback on every blog out there complaining about file storage services out there. Most want something for nothing. So if you can't or don't want to use MU then I'm sorry you'll be missing out. Still plenty of music here shared on Rapidshare. Hope you find something else here and thanks for the info from your post.

Sorry, I don't want to turn this into an argument. If you wish, you can confirm the information on Megaupload by googling a few of the key words. Basically, in many countries, when you try to download you get a message that all download slots for your country are occupied. They are always occupied! They give you the alternative to download and install their download software. If you do so, they allow you just one download each 24 hours but only between midnight and 0900 GMT. As the agreement accompanying their software states, your internet connection is then monitored for their purposes. (And you give them permission to do so.)
Forcing users from certain countries to install spyware on their computers is, at the very least, a questionable business practice. Megaupload used to be a very popular site for file storage. However, these policies have offended many users, who have abandoned it in droves. It is now much less common to see Megaupload links.
I certainly understand why you wouldn't want to re-rip your tapes. The way mp3 and wma (lossy compression) work is to chop away at certain frequencies in the spectrum. The 64 bitrate sounds ok for spoken voice (because of the limited range) but permanently eliminates much of the musical content. The greater the compression (the lower the bitrate), the greater the loss, even from home recordings taped from the radio.
My compliments on your blog. You have obviously put a lot of work into it. No offense was intended.

I would not recommend installing the toolbar BTW. I beive that is where your spyware issue lies. All toolbars are trouble as far as I'm concerned.

Anonymous said...

That's precisely it. They insist that you install their toolbar (loaded with spyware) and then only let you get one file per day, after midnight GMT. In addition to the spyware with the toolbar, they also pass load a casino popup. Those popups often have trojan droppers within. I would not be surprised if the popups to which they subject users, in favored countries, also contained spyware.

On Frantic Friday in the early 80's, Weasel played a beach song possibly titled Terminal Beach. Lyrics- "Terminal Beach sand and sea...Terminal Beach will be the death of me...My baby's got a bad case of Terminal Beach." I have a tape from the radio. However, I have never been able to confirm the song title or the artist. Can anyone tell me the name of the artist and the name of the song?

Hi Camarillo,

I stumbled across a post you made about Weasal's Friday setlist and found your blog. I would love to DL some old HFS but seems that the links are no longer valid. I started listening to them in the early 70's and parked at Weasal's feet a few times when he did the old overnight show. It all changed my life (for the better I hope). Anyway, if you could be so kind as to activate a couple of links for me I would be forever grateful. I want to play some for my 29 year old daughter so she "understands." Cheers and thanks.

I missed this one as well. I've recreated Weasel's weekend set on Spotify as best I can, but it's just not the same. Would love to hear it again.

What This Is All About

I've been collecting live music from various sources since the mid to late 70's. Radio shows, TV broadcasts, radio show pre-FM CD's and vinyl LP's and some trades. Most of the shows posted here, I recorded and ripped myself. I always had top of the line stereo equipment and cassette and open reel recorders for those on air broadcasts.

I've downloaded plenty of bootlegged concerts from various blogs. As a rule I will only post stuff from my collection and not what is already available out there.

I also post out of print CDs and LPs from my collection.
I will repost from my readers anything someone sends me as long as it is either out of print or something that's not from someone else's blog. If you want to share a link for a cool item on your blog, or someone else's, please feel free to post it in the comments........

Enjoy and please leave a comment and pass this blog along.

Can you believe that so many out there are starving for the old WHFS? Amazing!

If you leave a comment, how about using a nickname instead of Anonymous. At least make up something please. Thanks!

I have reconsidered my position...and will re-upload dead links, so long as you go to that particular post and make the request from the comments page...
