Joan Osborne Austin City Limits Audio Rip

Forget her big hit for a moment. Joan is a soulful and talented artist that I like a lot. Saw her at the Ramshead in Annapolis, MD a while back. This is a very good show from Joan! Even "One Of Us" is done so differently it is barely recognizable.

Don Dixon EEE Vinyl LP Rip

Just got to dig on some Don Dixon whenever you get a chance!
Don Dixon was born on December 13, 1950 in Lancaster, South Carolina. His college roommate was the writer Bruce Brooks.

Dixon is considered to be one of the key producers of what is called the jangle pop movement of the early 1980s. He spent thirteen years as a member of NC cult heroes Arrogance. Around 1983, Dixon attracted attention by co-producing with Mitch Easter, R.E.M.'s landmark debut LP Murmur. He then spent several years producing the work of varied artists including Chris Stamey (formerly of The dB's) and The Smithereens. Considered to be a highlight of this period was Tommy Keene's Run Now EP (co-produced with T Bone Burnett). This success led to Dixon recording his solo debut Most of the Girls Like to Dance (But Only Some of the Boys Like To), a further affirmation of his love of classic pop melodies and spiky, Nick Lowe-inspired wordplay.

After producing wife Marti Jones' Unsophisticated Time, he released his second solo effort, Romeo at Juilliard, in 1987 and the live Chi-Town Budget Show a year later. After 1989's EEE, Dixon's recording career went into hiatus for several years and he returned to producing, helming efforts for the Smithereens, Richard Barone, and James McMurtry before finally releasing Romantic Depressive in 1995. Another lengthy hiatus preceded the early 2000 release of The Invisible Man and its 2001 follow-up, Note Pad #38. His latest release, The Entire Combustible World in One Small Room followed in summer 2006.

This is my first post from my collection of WRNR cassette tapes. I'll start the 1st post with the tapes I have ripped to my hard drive from 1994. Most of these 'RNR tapes are recorded in mono due to the weak signal. The music is so good it really doesn't matter.
Jake Einstein bought WXCL [Rock 103] in 1994 then later secured the call letters WRNR. [Rock N Roll] It's like the reincarnation of the 'HFS of old. Several DJs from 'HFS had shows on WRNR. Stay tuned for more.

With the exception of a couple of tunes from Michelle Shocked, this is a folder stuffed with Woman live from various TV broadcasts. Information for the source of each tune is contained in the ID tag. I'll post this one and if I get some feedback and some downloads I'll post more.

And here is a small stocking stuffer for you. A short
(30 minute) mp3 from Xmas day 1978. It was one of
those rare times that I could receive WGTB here in
Baltimore. I was preparing to go to my parents house
to spend Christmas day when I tuned in to find Josh,
Hall, and Root Boy Slim on the air shooting the bull
and spinning discs. This is all that I managed to get
on tape but another small chunk of history has
survived!

I will send more as I go through my stuff.

Catfish has been called an "American folk blues hero" and has been a mainstay on the American Blues music scene for three decades now! He has twenty four albums to his credit, comprised almost totally of original material. "Catfish Blues" and "Like A Big Dog Barkin’" on the Wildcat label, and "Eyewitness Blues" on Genes CD were released in 1994 and 1995. His first album of children’s songs "Adventures at Catfish Pond", on Music for Little People label was released in May of 1996. The album won the NAPA Golden Award as best children’s music of 1996. His
1998 release "Bare Necessities"(on Chicken Legs Music) finds him in a solo acoustic setting, with lowdown funky blues and soulful ballads. His 1999 release "Twenty Years" features performances from concerts and radio broadcast and includes the only version now available of "Boogie Man Gonna Git Ya", as well as other rare gems. His 2002 release "Let's Eat" is a best of collection of his best known food songs of which there are many! Both of his latest albums are available on Chicken Legs Music. All of his albums prior to the 1990's are hard to find except for the first Catfish Band album "Get Down", which Sony/Epic re-released in the mid 1990's, due to demand for it overseas.
Catfish found his calling early on. While growing up in Detroit, he was sneaking into Motown Records Hitsville studio to catch the Four tops and the Supremes and grooving to R&B and Blues while his contemporaries gravitated to the Beatles. In the late 1960’s he formed the Catfish Band and led them out of Detroit into national prominence.
By 1973 Catfish had settled into Washington, DC where he was packing them in at Desperado’s, Childe Harold and the Cellar Door with what the Washington City Paper describes as "his cheerfully muscular blues & rockin’ boogie". He made a few friends along the way too. He became a regular opener for Bonnie Raitt and Little Feat, who also started showing up on his recordings. When he formed the Chicken Legs Band in 1981, he was joined by Little Feat’s Paul Barrere, Richie Hayward, Kenny Gradney and Sam Clayton. Their final tour hit twenty one cities and sold out every one.
By 1982 Catfish had headed west to California where he lived for the next 17 years. Along with Paul Barrere he formed the Bluesbusters in 1984. They recorded two albums for Landslide Records and toured for many years, until Little Feat was reformed in the late 1980’s.
In 1999 Catfish founded the Hillbilly Funk Allstars with T Lavitz, Richie Hayward, Kenny Gradney, and Vassar Clements. Their first tour was well received, with great turn outs, will they ever tour again? He continues to work solo acoustic and with his new electric band in the mid-atlantic area, as well as festivals around the globe.
Today Catfish Hodge lives in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, where he says "the air is fresh and the mountains are good for the healing of the soul." After thirty five years on the road and twenty four albums having been released, he is still electrifying music fans with his powerful and spiritual style of original music!
An evening with Catfish is a raucous romp through life’s occurrences, punctuated with his unique insights and wit. While critics struggle to classify his sound, calling it “Delta jazz”, "Southern rock", or “rhythm and blues”, Catfish just keeps on keepin’ on, pleasing the crowd with his right-on songs and electrifying stage presence.

The Assassins with Jimmy Thackery and Tom Principoto

Here are two Vinyl LP's of The Assassins from my collection recorded to one CD and then ripped to my hard drive. I got these from Joe's Record Paradise a couple of 5 years ago or so.

Tom Principoto has done brief stints with various acts including Billy Price And The Keystone Rhythm Band, Big Mama Thornton, Sunnyland Slim, James Montgomery, and The Assassins with Jimmy Thackery, former guiatrist with The Nighthawks. Tom Principoto appears on two albums with the Assassins, "No Previous Record" (1986) and "Partners In Crime" (1987) which won a "Wammy Award". Jimmy Thackery became widely known as the innovative guitarist with the Nighthawks, one of the hardest-working and most popular blues bands of the '70's and '80's. Starting in 1974, the group recorded over twenty albums and constantly toured the U.S., Europe, Canada and Japan. Jimmy was the heart, soul, and adrenaline of the Nighthawks sound during his fourteen year tenure with the Washington, D.C.-based band, creating a distinctively raw, powerful guitar style and establishing a reputation as a spectacular soloist. Thackery comes by his six-string brilliance honestly, having learned from the very best sources. Besides Buddy Guy and Jimi Hendrix, Thackery cites Chicago axe master Otis Rush as a primary influence. Moreover, he learned quite a bit from playing on stage alongside such blues legends as Muddy Waters, James Cotton and Luther "Guitar Junior" Johnson. Thackery left the Nighthawks in 1987, needing a break from a grueling 300-night-a-year touring schedule. He also felt a need to try something new musically, so Thackery founded a six piece R&B band called The Assassins. The popular and critically-acclaimed group recorded three albums before disbanding in 1991.

The artwork is pretty poor. I have a small flatbed scanner and had to take 4 scans of each side of the album covers, reconstruct them in Publisher, print to Adobe Acrobat Distiller, then took a screen shot, saved to Paint, then cropped the rough edges and saved again. All this because no one is going to find these album covers in cyberspace. If by chance you do, please send me a link and I'll re-post better covers. These are two ultra rare LPs, never released on CD. And these two are mint!

WHFS 102.3 Bethesda, MD: Adele 01-08-1983 Saturday Morning

This is DJ Adele recorded Jan 08 1983, Saturday morning, 10:00-11:30 AM right after Dick Lillard's Roots of Rock show. One of the cool things about ripping these tapes, is rediscovering music from the past, then searching the blogs and e-bay, Amazon, etc. looking for those albums that I don't own yet. Widespread Depression Orchestra from this tape is one of those. There is a CD on Amazon for $198.00. Holy crap! I'll get an album or two from these guys sooner or later. Edit: Just won the album pictured above! I love that Texas Swing boogie type music.

Elvis Presley, The Blasters, Powerhouse, Aerosmith, Stray Cats, Nighthawks, J.Geils, Johnny Winter, T-Birds, Widespread Depression Orchestra [Barnyard Boogie], Eddie Jefferson, Joe Jackson, Slim Gaylor, Garland Jeffries, Catfish Hodge, Elvis Costello, Blues Brothers

Little Feat: Live At The Warner Theater 1976 WHFS Archives

This Little Feat Live From The Warner Theater in 1976 cassette tape, was recorded from WHFS on Oct 18 1988. Tom T hosted the radio program that evening. The beginning of this tape, perhaps the 1st two minutes or so is a bit flaky with the sound being tinkered with. After that it smoothes out and is a nice sounding tid bit of the Feat from 1976.

Tom T's Intro, Skin It Back
Walkin' All Night

What This Is All About

I've been collecting live music from various sources since the mid to late 70's. Radio shows, TV broadcasts, radio show pre-FM CD's and vinyl LP's and some trades. Most of the shows posted here, I recorded and ripped myself. I always had top of the line stereo equipment and cassette and open reel recorders for those on air broadcasts.

I've downloaded plenty of bootlegged concerts from various blogs. As a rule I will only post stuff from my collection and not what is already available out there.

I also post out of print CDs and LPs from my collection.
I will repost from my readers anything someone sends me as long as it is either out of print or something that's not from someone else's blog. If you want to share a link for a cool item on your blog, or someone else's, please feel free to post it in the comments........

Enjoy and please leave a comment and pass this blog along.

Can you believe that so many out there are starving for the old WHFS? Amazing!

If you leave a comment, how about using a nickname instead of Anonymous. At least make up something please. Thanks!

I have reconsidered my position...and will re-upload dead links, so long as you go to that particular post and make the request from the comments page...
