Kayaker,
I saw Marti and Don Dixon together several times around town. My fave show was at the 930 club in 1986. She was riding high from "Unsophisticated Time" doing so well in the DC area due to HFS playing the great "Follow You All Over the World" I was in love with Marti back then...LOL. I have all the Marti vinyls so this is going to be a treat to pick up the rips.
thx/VanFan

Also, I think Weasel was the MC at that show,,,,,or was it Damian? Oh well, it was a great show and a great time. VanFan

Sounds cool. Thanks so much for all your feedback VanFan!
I saw Marti and Don together about 6-8 years ago at the Ramhsead in Annapolis. Nice show.
Saw her together with Amy Rigby about 2 years ago and it was awful. Some stupid tour they did together called "Cynical Girls". In my opinin was all about man bashing. Even my female concert buddy that went with me thought it was a bit much. They played sever good tunes, but all in all the show mostly sucked.
I have since forgiven them both.

here's a kinder write up from someone that enjoyed the show more than me.

Unsophisticated Time was an incredible album. Alas, she was never able to match it as one might expect. I bought the CD and am very happy to have it.

good thing...who wants a cassette rip anways eh?

thanks. I could never get a copy of Unsophisticated Time since I had vinyl. This is great. It's got my fave Marti J song on it, Follow You All Over The World. She's that rarity in post-rock pop, an interpreter of other's songs. These days there's a 'shame' when you don't write all your own material but Jones is brave enough to see the value of covering good material and in some cases making it better.
thanks again and Merry Christmas.

e,
Seems to be a few Unsophisticated Time fans out there. It is a very good album. Glad you could get it here. I like pretty much everything she did. I would say Don Dixon played a huge part in her and others when it comes down to catch pop songs.
Thanks again for the input e.

"Match Game" was my intro to Marti. How could I not try an album with songs by David Bowie, Elvis Costello, Twilley, Crenshaw, Barone, and Dixon?

Camarillo Brillo said...

todd, no doubt, Marti could be the best cover artist out there!! thanks for the feedback!

Wow! Thanks for all the Marti!

I had ripped Any Kind of Lie from my own vinyl copy here:

But I haven't heard these others in years - some I've never heard.

Much thanks!

looks like you got a heckuva blog goin' on there! Thanks for the link!

walknthabass said...

No, thank you! You've got some great stuff here. I wish I had archived more stuff back then. But you did and you're happy to share it!

Camarillo Brillo said...

Sharing feels good. Just Knowing someone else out there is enjoying it is awesome. Besides, I have found so much cool stuff out there from blogs like yours, I just had to do my part.

I've got all of these, so I'll pass on the download, but it's just nice to see some other MJ fans being made happy. She has a special voice and a charming personality. She and Don Dixon made a terrific team. I enjoyed every show of theirs I saw (most at the the Bottom Line in NYC) and all the albums. If she can't sing for us anymore, I hope she's happy whatever she's doing.

Camarillo Brillo said...

Moshe,
I've seen her and Don together too...great pair no doubt. She is still singing, I saw her 2 or 3 years...

Thanks for loading these and everything else. I've seen Marti with and without Don probably a dozen times since the 930 days, and catch her every time she plays at Rams Head. They have always been one of my favorites to see. I got to meet both of them in Annapolis earlier this year and they were great to talk to and I think I still have a crush on her after all these years.

Camarillo Brillo said...

thanks again citisights...Marti and Don are the best!

Grrr! Rapidshare no longer works. Oh well.

I bought a copy of "Unsophisticated Time" from the Princeton Record Exchange that was in mint condition, so I finally broke down a did a rip. I included cover scans, notes, and label shots. Below is the link for everyone who comes here looking for the album.

Great to see this blog, by the way; I grew up listening to the old WHFS, which is how I discovered Marti Jones.

Enjoy

What This Is All About

I've been collecting live music from various sources since the mid to late 70's. Radio shows, TV broadcasts, radio show pre-FM CD's and vinyl LP's and some trades. Most of the shows posted here, I recorded and ripped myself. I always had top of the line stereo equipment and cassette and open reel recorders for those on air broadcasts.

I've downloaded plenty of bootlegged concerts from various blogs. As a rule I will only post stuff from my collection and not what is already available out there.

I also post out of print CDs and LPs from my collection.
I will repost from my readers anything someone sends me as long as it is either out of print or something that's not from someone else's blog. If you want to share a link for a cool item on your blog, or someone else's, please feel free to post it in the comments........

Enjoy and please leave a comment and pass this blog along.

Can you believe that so many out there are starving for the old WHFS? Amazing!

If you leave a comment, how about using a nickname instead of Anonymous. At least make up something please. Thanks!

I have reconsidered my position...and will re-upload dead links, so long as you go to that particular post and make the request from the comments page...
