WHFS DJ Weasel's Last Show on 102.3 Bethesda, MD 07-14-1983

It's a bit chilling and freaky to hear Weasel doing his last show on 102.3 in Bethesda. In the studio with Weasel is Tex Rubinowitz and Bob Margolin reminiscing about the old days.
I must say while listening to this, before I figured out it was Tex, I could have sworn it was Craig from WRNR's Midnight Shift show. I even Googled Tex and Craig in different combos to see if maybe they were one in the same. The similarities in the voice is uncanny.
Weasel goes on to play some tunes from Tex and other stuff that have a 'goodbye' or 'the last one' kind of theme. Like I say kinda freaky. Thank god they were back later, but while taping no one really knew.
I have the tape that immediately follows this. It needs baking and cooling so it will be a couple of days. It's a trip when Weazel plays the final tune and the station goes dead, as I watch the signal strength meter on my tuner drop to zero.

Danny Gatton & Robert Gordon: Humbler- Live

See the look on Robert Gordon's face?
Kinda says it all!

Here'a couple of 3 reviews found on line mashed together:
This is a legendary performance; the bootleg recording was a prized possession among guitar players for many years. And now I'm thankful it has been made available on CD and I was able to obtain a copy of it. This is just incredibly fun to listen to!
As some other reviewers have pointed out, the quality of the recording is very good but might not quite be up to modern standards. But it is plenty good enough, and we're lucky to have a recording at all. How did it come about? That's part of the legend: When Gatton showed up a few hours before the show that night for a sound check, the technicians working at the club couldn't believe what they were hearing and quickly scrambled to record everything as best they could. And it's a good thing they did!!

The title gives only a clue to the talent Danny Gatton posesses. Here we here the late legendary guitarist absolutely blister a set of rockabilly standards and lesser knowns. Gatton was unknown to many in the crowd. He remains such to far too many people today. But for those in attendance in this small venue, a legendary performance unfolded. Nearly everyone came to hear Robert Gordon belt out his usual fare and were treated to Gatton's simple undescribable fret work. On track after track Gatton pushes himself and the band over the top. The set is cut short as the fire department puts a halt to the fireworks due to overcrowdedness in the tiny bar which was home to the white hot performance. This albumn was bootlegged for years but is now thankfully available to the masses. This is even more appreciated since Danny is gone from us and there ain't no more like him that's for sure.

If you are interested in rockabilly guitar playing, this is an important album to own. Gatton runs through his bag of rockabilly tricks with humbling speed and accuracy.
As far as being enjoyable listening, it is fair. Vocals, drums and bass are adequate, but fairly uninspired. Gatton's playing is marvelous but sometimes so over the top it detracts from the song - like he is on 11 all the time.

The quality of the recording is good, although it lacks some of the high frequency content of a modern recording. It is 48 minutes long with 15 songs. It is a mono recording bootlegged off a mixing board during a 1981 club show on the band's fourth gig together.

Since this album is mostly rockabilly, you won't hear the full range of Gatton's musical abilities (but you still get a lot in 48 minutes!). You get an appreciation of his technical proficiency. The soloing, while technically astounding, sometimes comes off as gimmickry as Danny wedges so much material into 3 chord rock(-abilly) songs. Of course gimmickry is permissible, encouraged, and perhaps even a hallmark of rockabilly, so if his soloing comes off as gimmickry maybe that is a neutral or positive comment. More specifically, some of the soloing is sped up and fancied up riffs from Rockabilly standards such as "Hello Mary-Lou" or "Rock-Around-the-Clock" - songs which he ain't playin' when he borrows the riffs. Some of his later recordings, like Redneck Jazz, feature more complex arrangements as Danny is not limited, as he was on this gig, to mostly 3 or 4 chord standards.

Roscoe's the one playin' that lowdown and dirty slide guitar on "True Love". He plays the second solo on "Jumpin'", and damned if he don't put the "T in Twang" on "Wastin' Time Talkin'". Top Ten does the total freakout jam in "The Cool And The Crazy". He also does the Byrds-style pickin' on "Judas Kiss". All of Scott's guitar work is panned left, while Eric be jammin' on your right. Frankie "Choo-Choo" Funaro can be heard gleefully pummeling his drums throughout and especially on "I Play The Drums". Manuelo rides shot gun right up the middle "with de bottom most bass". All songs were recorded on stage at Dr. Rockits except for "Wastin' Time Talkin'" which was actually recorded two nights earlier at Lee's Palace in Toronto.

The Del Lords Frontier Days Vinyl Rip

Another 'HFS staple from the early 80's...here is a vinyl L.P. from my record collection that was ripped a couple of years ago to my hard drive.

Between 1984 and 1990, the Del-Lords released four studio albums plus a mini live album. Most of their output has been made available on CD except the first two LP's which have never been reissued on CD, even though some songs can be found on Get Tough (the CD Best Of). With guitarist Scott Kempner (once Top Ten of the Dictators) penning the material but occasionally relinquishing lead vocals to guitarist Eric "Roscoe" Ambel, the Del-Lords embraced rock's basic components with such skill and verve that they outshone most everyone else on the scene. Wall Of Voodoo, The Ugly Americans LP Vinyl Rip

From my vinyl LP collection and lovingly ripped in WMA format to my hard drive years ago.

Andy Prieboy picks up nicely where Stan Ridgeway left off. Wall Of Voodoo's rendition of Johnny Cash's "Ring of fire" is awesome.

The Ugly Americans In Australia Vinyl Release 1988
Produced and mixed by: Barry Rudolph & the Band

Red Light (3:45)
Crazy, Crazy Melbourne (5:39)
Wrong Way To Hollywood (4:37)
Living in the Red (3:50)
Blackboard Sky (4:45)
The Heart Never Can Tell (4:35)
Far Side of Crazy (4:17)
Ring of Fire (5:47)
Mexican Radio (4:44)

The Band:
Chas T. Gray (Keyboards, Backing Vocals, Bass Guitar)
Roger Mason (Keyboards And Backing Vocals)
Andy Prieboy (Vocals, Keyboards)
Ned Leukhardt (Drums, Percussion)
Marc Moreland (Guitars)

The Review Below refers to the CD that has two more tracks than the vinyl LP.
There must be a law or something, because every live album seems to follow the same, clichéd order of events: crowd cheers, band takes the stage to a huge, crashing chord, crowd goes nuts, crowd noise fades, band plays a few famous songs, band digs up a relic from its backcatalogue, tired old men crank out a few more famous songs, end with biggest hit to date.

This is not your typical live album.

First aberration from the norm: instead of cheering, the Melbourne, Australia, crowd boos heartily-albeit in a friendly manner-and the first sound is not a grand chord in a major key; rather, it is a drum machine thumping the simple beats to "Red Light."

Second difference: "Red Light" featured Stan Ridgway, the band's original lead vocalist, on the album version, whereas this live version has Andy Prieboy at the mike. This is something akin to Sammy Hagar opening a Van Halen concert with a David Lee Roth-era song or Brian Johnson kicking off a show with a Bon Scott tune-i.e. an odd move, to say the least.

Third peculiarity: The second track, instead of being a barn-burner hit sure to rev up the crowd, is not a real WoV song at all. Rather, it's an amusing little lounge-singer ditty praising Melbourne for its cultural diversity-"you've got everything from restaurants/ to kiddie porn."

Fourth funky move: following this dubious compliment, the band rocks through two excellent, original numbers unavailable on any studio album. Original songs on a live album? And two of them in a row? This is heresy!…but I like it. Track three is one of the best songs in the WoV oeuvre, a musically catchy and lyrically evocative tale of harsh street life in Hollywood, and track four…I dunno what it's about, but it's mesmerizing and, not incidentally, a bit creepy. (Matter of fact, most of the songs on this disc are at least slightly creepy…)

The first (and second and third) expected song(s): the fifth tune, a hallucinatory quasi-love song, is the first appearance of a studio track originally recorded with Andy Prieboy. Oddly enough, out of the eleven tracks on the disc, only three (tracks five, seven [one of this reviewer's all-time favorite songs], and 11) are versions of album tracks featuring Mr. Prieboy on vocals.

Fifth unexpected track: track six is another previously unrecorded song, this time a Woody Guthrie cover tune. Perhaps it's not entirely unexpected…on a previous album the band included a more-than-slightly twisted version of a Patsy Cline standard, but it's one thing to record a version of another artist's song on a studio album and another thing altogether to release it for the first time on a live album. And who the hell rerecords 1930's folk tunes for popular rerelease anyway?

At last, the lone cliché: track nine is another cover, this one previously released, of Johnny Cash's famous "Ring of Fire," which originally featured Stan Ridgway. The reason this qualifies as a cliché is that it's an oldie in the band's repertoire; their first release, which was also a live recording, included this song on the set list.

And almost, but not quite, trite: track ten, WoV's lone hit, "Mexican Radio," is the next-to-last song on the album; if it had been last, that would have qualified as a live album cliché, but it is disqualifed on the grounds of not being the last song on the disc. That honor goes to the previously mentioned track eleven, a much lesser-known song off a nearly unknown album.

Sure is odd, eh?

Ellen Foley: Another Breath Vinyl LP Rip

Here's a cool artist I knew nothing about until someone on the audiokarma.org music forum kept going on and on about how good she was. Then one day I was ripping a WHFS tape and David plays her cover of Robert Palmer's "Johnny And Mary". It sounded so nice I had to play it twice! I bought the vinyl LP on e-bay for a couple of bucks and was pleasently surprised. Check her out...

Her first big break was singing the duet with Meat Loaf on "Paradise by the Dashboard Light" from the 1977 album Bat out of Hell. Although Karla DeVito is featured on the video, she is miming to Foley's vocals.

She can be heard on The Clash album Sandinista! in the song "Hitsville UK". All four members of The Clash appeared on her 1981 album The Spirit of St. Louis and Mick Jones and Joe Strummer co-wrote a number of songs for the album. The Clash's hit song "Should I Stay or Should I Go", written and sung by Mick Jones, from the Combat Rock album, was about the turbulent relationship he shared with Foley at the time.

Foley also recorded a memorable duet in 1980 with Ian Hunter, "We Gotta Get Outta Here". She later sang on Joe Jackson's 1984 album Body and Soul, most notably on the duet with Jackson entitled "Happy Ending".

As Ellen Foley published her third LP "Another Breath" in 1983, again she turned heads by being able to have Vini Poncia as a producer. He is well known for his successful work with Leo Sayer and Ringo Starr. The experienced expert in audio mixing discovered refinements in Ellen Foley's voice that must have escaped his predecessors. Spectacular interpretations of songs such as "Johnny And Mary" (Robert Palmer), "Come And Get These Memories" (Holland/Dozier/Holland) and "Let Me Be The One You Love" (by cult-composer-team Desmond Child and David Landau) again brought her the best critiques in all major music publications. Full of enthusiasm "Music Week" wrote: "Who could have thought that Robert Palmer would be so happy about a cover-version of his hit. The whole album is along these lines: sparingly used arrangements, good songs and above all this voice that doesn't bore you for a minute."

Tommy Keene: Songs from the Film

Tommy Keene was a young, indie-label-associated power-popper from the cusp of the South--the suburbs of Washington, D.C., to be exact--when he signed with Geffen and hooked up with former Beatles engineer and Elvis Costello producer Geoff Emerick for 1986's Songs from the Film. The songwriter and roiling lead guitarist commenced to make one of the era's more sadly overlooked albums, belatedly issued on CD a dozen years on with a passel of EP and previously unreleased tracks added. Propulsion, tune, and heart come together gloriously on "Places That Are Gone," "Gold Town," "As Life Goes By" and "Back Again." --Rickey Wright

Tommy Keene: Sleeping on a Roller Coaster- CD EP

Some reviews:
Tommy Keene, originally from Washington DC, has been turning out exquisitely crafted jangly guitar pop for almost twenty years now. I first heard him in the mid-eighties when a friend recommended his PLACES THAT ARE GONE EP. Always a sucker for a well-turned hook, I was as much impressed by his command of the genre as I was confused by the fact that he wasn't a superstar.
Thankfully he's managed to continue recording despite the lack of sales. I've purchased each album and never been disappointed!

This five-song EP was released in 1992 after a three-year absence following his epic BASED ON HAPPY TIMES (currently deleted). Every tune is great and representative of the rest of his catalog. It's a steal for the price.... just listen to the samples!

By Andrew Otwell "heyotwell" (Seattle, WA)
If you didn't already know Keene's stuff, you wouldn't be reading this, so you've probably already sought this one out.
Despite the omission of the title song (which showed up on "The Real Underground"), this EP is possibly the most perfect example of guitar-driven power pop ever recorded. Worth 3 times the cheap used price above.

By Don Kelly (Washington, DC USA)
I have three Tommy Keene albums - and I wonder how he didn't become a big star. His songs are great and this is another prime example.
One star deducted because his songs all seem to go to the same sound - a great sound - but after a whole album's worth it is a little redundant. This may be due to the fact that I just started listening. Sometimes with more time invested the differences unfold themselves to my untrained ear.
So, well worth buying - but don't expect it to be the only cd you will ever want to listen to. It may become ONE of your desert island discs.

Tommy Keene: Isolation Party

Amazon.com
As a keeper of the '60s pop rock flame during the synth-pop days of the 1980s, Tommy Keene put the non-existent Washington, D.C. power pop scene on the map with a series of EPs and eventually several albums for a major label. Years later, now recording for the reputable indie label Matador, Keene is still sticking to bright, chiming guitars and quick, catchy tunes. Though no single cut stands out as the obvious "hit," the cumulative assemblage of tracks such as "Long Time Missing," "Getting Out from Under You," and "The World Outside" make for an extremely pleasurable trip down power-pop lane. --Rob O'Connor

Entertainment Weekly
[S]inger-guitarist [Tommy] Keene continues to crank out the kind of minor gems he's built his rep on.... Power-pop enthusiasts should find plenty to admire in these melodically acute tunes, although true highlights are in short supply.

Tommy Keene: Places That Are Gone- Vinyl EP

Short but sweet!

Tommy Keene
Places That Are Gone
Dolphin DLP-2003, 1984

Keene's first LP (1981's Strange Alliance) gained a lot of press, but not the radio attention of this 1984 12" EP for Dolphin. In addition to the memorable title song (rerecorded later his first major label LP), Keene crafted four more chiming, hook-filled guitar tunes and a wickedly good cover of Alex Chilton's "Hey! Little Child." Keene continued to produce consistently fine records (from 1986's Songs from the Film through 2006's Crashing the Ether), but as with so many artists, this first spark of youthful exuberance marks a special place in his catalog.

Side 1
Places That Are Gone
Nothing Happened Yesterday
Baby Face

Side 2
Back to Zero Now
When the Truth is Found
Hey! Little Child (Alex Chilton)

All songs by Tommy Keene, except as noted.

Tommy Keene: Ten Years After CD

If you like Power Pop no one does it better than Tommy Keene! Too bad this dude never got the reognition he deserves. Saw him a while back and he rocked the roof off the the sucker!
Ten Years After contains thirteen numbers fitting nicely between melodic Pop and energetic Rock - all driven by Tommy Keene's guitar work. If Keene had two brothers, they might well be Bill Lloyd and Matthew Sweet. Ten Years After isn't interchangeable with the albums of Lloyd or Sweet, but fairly close. The energy of fuzz-guitar rockers such as "Going Out Again" and "Turning On Blue" is intense. Keene weaves catchy lyrics and hum-along melodies (Today And Tomorrow, On The Runway) into well-crafted Pop jingles. Whether attacking the guitar with vigor (Compromise), or gently strumming the strings (Silent Town), his playing is arousing. The band can rock hard, lay down jangling guitar harmonies (Your Heart Beats Alone, Good Thing Going, Before The Lights Go Down), and add convincing touches of country (If You're Getting Married Tonight).

1. Going Out Again
2. Turning on Blue
3. Today and Tomorrow
4. Your Heart Beats Alone
5. If You're Getting Married Tonight
6. On the Runway
7. We Started over Again
8. Silent Town
9. Good Thing Going
10. Compromise
11. You Can't Wait for Time
12. Before the Lights Go Down

The Razz, U of MD Nov 03 1978 WWDC-DC101

eddie sent this Cd with the Root Boy disc. It is The Razz Live from The University Of Maryland, opening for Rockpile on Nov 03-1978.
eddie, U Da Man!
The artwork above and the info below is just something I found on the WWW. Take it for what it's worth.

Michael Reidy - vocals
Tommy Keene - guitar, vocals
Bill Craig - guitar
Ted Nicely - bass, vocals
Doug Tull - drums

Razz - Airtime 7":
Marianne / Cherry Vanilla // Love is Love / Hippy Hippy Shake
2000 copies on black vinyl
O'Rourke 1003?/Limp Records 030, 1979

Lineup: Michael Reidy - vocals / Tommy Keene - guitar, vocals / Bill Craig - guitar / Ted Nicely - bass, vocals / Doug Tull - drums

Recording Info: Recorded live, edited by Skip Groff.

Notes: Sleeves reprinted in the 1980's when Skip ran out.

Skip's Comments: I think Airtime was one of the greatest records ever to come out of DC. I edited it. That was my entire involvement in it, aside from putting it out.

They had done a concert for DC101 live from a local venue, and I'm sure there's more songs than those four, but I have not been able to find where they might be. In any case, at some point I had access to the whole tape and took it over to Zientara's and chose those cuts and put them in--they weren't together in the concert the way they were on the record, they didn't necessarily fall together.

I thought it was a really, really strong EP, and it showed their dynamics and versatility on stage, the ability of Michael Reidy to go from a ballad to a harmony type thing to a hard rocking type thing. It also showcased Tommy Keene's Love is Love, which at that point in time was developing into the Razz's real tour de force. It became the ending piece later on, and they would do that at the very end of a set and expand on it.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Reviews: This record is currently AWOL. I don't remember being terribly impressed with it though. I'll find it eventually...

2004/06/04: Indeed, the record has been found and listened to again, and found wanting. Normally I'd say, "I bet this is great live," but since it's already live, I guess I can't. It's above average rocknroll, but it's missing the primal energy I normally associate with punk. The first Razz 7" had it, and I guess there's a little hint of it here, but not enough to hold my interest.

2004/07/18: Just to clarify, I do like this record, and I heartily recommend it to fans of DC rock, it just doesn't pack the kind of wallop that really gets me going.

2005/08/04: Having heard the whole concert this was taken from, I have to say what was cut out is much better than what was released. The concert as a whole is great fun...

Ian Lloyd: Goose Bumps, Third World Civilization

Two albums posted here from Ian Lloyd. I guess I am on some sort of Power Pop thing...Who knows...TWC is a vinyl rip from my collection. Goose Bumps is a cassette rip taped from vinyl, originally recorded from my buddy Sully. No worries...this sounds great! Taped on my world class Pioneer CT-F1000 3 head tape deck on a TDK SA-C90 tape and played back for ripping on my Nakamichi 3 head tape deck. The sound is perfect. Both rips are exceptional.

Ian Lloyd
Goose Bumps
Release Date: 1979
Label: Scotti Bros
Managed by Bud Prager in 1979 (the man who represented Foreigner, Deena Miller -- daughter of Rolling Stones producer Jimmy Miller -- Leslie West, and many others), the former singer for Stories was produced by a man instrumental in Aerosmith's comeback, the late Bruce Fairbairn. With help from members of the Cars, Foreigner, and former Aerosmith guitarist Jimmy Crespo, this album had all the elements for the breakthrough disc that Ian Lloyd deserved. "Slip Away" was written by Ric Ocasek and should have been a big Cars hit since it really didn't conquer radio on behalf of Lloyd. Ben Orr is on bass and backing vocals, Ric Ocasek pipes in on backing vocals and rhythm guitar, and Jimmy Crespo plays the very new wavey guitar -- it's Aerosmith meets the Cars with Stories lead vocalist! Russ Ballard's "First Heartbreak" sounds like a lost girl group classic with T.Rex overtones. A smart cover like the Bee Gees' "Holiday gets all synthed up, while the Zombies' "Time of the Season," always a welcome title, gets a respectable and unique reading by Stories former lead singer. "Open Soul Surgery" definitely goes the Foreigner route, though Lou Gramm and Mick Jones are on other tracks like "Love Stealer" and "She Broke Your Heart." Side one is very good, but side two fares even better, the title track, "Goose Bumps," with a solid riff and creepy vocal by the singer, and something even more key -- hooks different from the other 11 songs. There are substantial melodies all over this disc, solving the problem of his Polydor outing three years prior. Where the self-titled Ian Lloyd disc was mostly penned by the singer, Goose Bumps has a dazzling display of inviting and original tunes from all sorts of contributors. Ian Hunter and Corky Laing collaborate on "Easy Money" -- and this would've been great on a Mott the Hoople or Mountain disc, very different and distinctive, like when Hunter co-wrote "Goin' Through the Motions" for Blue Oyster Cult. "New City Lights" features Michael Brecker on tenor sax while Jim Vallance and Bryan Adams contribute the strong "I'm Ready." Paul DaVinci pens the final tune, "Love Is a Ship"; it is dreamy, another change of pace, and a superb conclusion to an album by a singer who gets help from some serious players, colors and flavors for his music that are more than worthwhile. Coming three years after his self-titled Polydor release, the 1976 disc which retained the services of Stories guitarist Steve Love and also contained performances by Mick Jones, this was the one after the transition album, the one that should have brought Ian Lloyd more hits like "I'm Coming Home," "Mammy Blue," and "Brother Louie." It made some noise but got lost in the rock & roll shuffle, however, Goose Bumps, with its red fingernails scraping across a chalk board cover (perhaps a little too punk for a pop artist), is more than just a solid outing from Ian Lloyd, it is an exemplary record and is worth repeated spins. Ian Lloyd
3WC (Third Wave Civilization)
Release Date: 1980
Label: Scotti Bros.

3WC is terrific, a smoother outing than the previous Goose Bumps with the singer and producer, Ian Lloyd and Bruce Fairbairn, respectively, seeming to be in sync, more comfortable with each other. "Straight From the Heart" was recorded three years before it became the breakout hit for the former lead singer of Sweeny Todd, a guy by the name of Bryan Adams, and this early version is an absolute revelation. What would have happened had the voice on the number one hit "Brother Louie" taken "Straight From the Heart" to the Top Ten first? Maybe it would have led to more hits for Ian Lloyd. Bryan Adams' songwriting partner, Jim Vallance, co-writes the title track with Ian Lloyd, and it is a great direction for this singer in search of a new hit. It is spacy, it is science fiction, it takes his Ric Ocasek-written track, "Slip Away," from the previous disc to the next level. It is simply a great piece of music. With Mick Jones of Foreigner, the brilliant Fairbairn, Loverboy's Paul Dean, and songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Jim Vallance, it is hard to imagine the former singer of Stories missing with this superlative effort. Foreigner's manager, Bud Prager, had the ear of the industry, and producer Fairbairn was a year away from his breakthrough hits with Loverboy. Much more refined than the excellent Goose Bumps album from 1979, that album had much potential but was all over the map. 3WC smooths things out with the pop flavors of Stories and that '80s sound which Bryan Adams made so popular. Lloyd's own songs, "Dedicated to You" and "Wanderers," are much more on target here as well, while he takes on covers of Gary Glitter's "Do You Wanna Touch Me" (which Tommy James did four years before this album), and the Supremes' "Stop! In the Name of Love." Both covers are fun, and they allow Lloyd the opportunity to go beyond the seriousness of the original tunes. The album is consistent with the tremendous reading of "Straight From the Heart," a Vallance/Adams original that works in "Lonely Nights" and an appealing combination of sounds which finally complement this valuable singer as perfectly as did the compositions of the Left Bank's Michael Browne. Innovative and carefully produced, it was just a couple of years before its time. Seek it out, hear some magic, and wonder what it takes to bring important music like this to the attention of the public. Joe Viglione, All Music Guide

CPR Live On E-Town

CPR: Crosby, Pevar & Raymond

CPR is a five-piece rock band established in 1997. David Crosby, Jeff Pevar and James Raymond are the namesakes of CPR. The trio has an amazing collective musical history. David Crosby is a legend having created or been a part of some of the most memorable music from the 60's and 70's. Jeff Pevar is a versatile guitarist well versed in rock, jazz and the blues. He has played on numerous projects and has worked with Jackson Browne, Ray Charles, Laura Nyro and James Taylor to name just a few of many. James Raymond is a musical director and well-respected keyboardist who has also worked with a variety of artists. CPR first toured as a band in early 1997.

I taped this from WRNR 103.1 FM Annapolis, MD on the 3rd of March 2000. It starts abruptly, as I probably stumbled on the show and grabbed a blank tape and started taping. As with most of my WRNR tapes it is recorded in mono due to the weakness of the radio station's signal. It's only about 20 minutes, but still sounds good and a real hard to find tid bit from CPR.

Don Dixon EEE Vinyl LP Rip

Just got to dig on some Don Dixon whenever you get a chance!
Don Dixon was born on December 13, 1950 in Lancaster, South Carolina. His college roommate was the writer Bruce Brooks.

Dixon is considered to be one of the key producers of what is called the jangle pop movement of the early 1980s. He spent thirteen years as a member of NC cult heroes Arrogance. Around 1983, Dixon attracted attention by co-producing with Mitch Easter, R.E.M.'s landmark debut LP Murmur. He then spent several years producing the work of varied artists including Chris Stamey (formerly of The dB's) and The Smithereens. Considered to be a highlight of this period was Tommy Keene's Run Now EP (co-produced with T Bone Burnett). This success led to Dixon recording his solo debut Most of the Girls Like to Dance (But Only Some of the Boys Like To), a further affirmation of his love of classic pop melodies and spiky, Nick Lowe-inspired wordplay.

After producing wife Marti Jones' Unsophisticated Time, he released his second solo effort, Romeo at Juilliard, in 1987 and the live Chi-Town Budget Show a year later. After 1989's EEE, Dixon's recording career went into hiatus for several years and he returned to producing, helming efforts for the Smithereens, Richard Barone, and James McMurtry before finally releasing Romantic Depressive in 1995. Another lengthy hiatus preceded the early 2000 release of The Invisible Man and its 2001 follow-up, Note Pad #38. His latest release, The Entire Combustible World in One Small Room followed in summer 2006.

This is my first post from my collection of WRNR cassette tapes. I'll start the 1st post with the tapes I have ripped to my hard drive from 1994. Most of these 'RNR tapes are recorded in mono due to the weak signal. The music is so good it really doesn't matter.
Jake Einstein bought WXCL [Rock 103] in 1994 then later secured the call letters WRNR. [Rock N Roll] It's like the reincarnation of the 'HFS of old. Several DJs from 'HFS had shows on WRNR. Stay tuned for more.

With the exception of a couple of tunes from Michelle Shocked, this is a folder stuffed with Woman live from various TV broadcasts. Information for the source of each tune is contained in the ID tag. This is the kind of thing I started doing once I stopped making CD Compilations. Maybe not as much fun throwing a bunch of tunes in a folder, but it's awesome to pack it full of whatever you like without the limitations of a 80 minute CD. I'll post this one and if I get some feedback and some downloads I'll post more.

2) "Love has No Pride" by Bonnie Raitt (4:15)

And here is a small stocking stuffer for you. A short
(30 minute) mp3 from Xmas day 1978. It was one of
those rare times that I could receive WGTB here in
Baltimore. I was preparing to go to my parents house
to spend Christmas day when I tuned in to find Josh,
Hall, and Root Boy Slim on the air shooting the bull
and spinning discs. This is all that I managed to get
on tape but another small chunk of history has
survived!

I will send more as I go through my stuff.

"Catfish on stage is like a twelve gauge shot gun of emotion going off!" - Rolling Stone Magazine

Few can compare with this man’s power and effect!" - Holler/ Colorado Blues Society News

Catfish has been called an "American folk blues hero" and has been a mainstay on the American Blues music scene for three decades now! He has twenty four albums to his credit, comprised almost totally of original material. "Catfish Blues" and "Like A Big Dog Barkin’" on the Wildcat label, and "Eyewitness Blues" on Genes CD were released in 1994 and 1995. His first album of children’s songs "Adventures at Catfish Pond", on Music for Little People label was released in May of 1996. The album won the NAPA Golden Award as best children’s music of 1996. His
1998 release "Bare Necessities"(on Chicken Legs Music) finds him in a solo acoustic setting, with lowdown funky blues and soulful ballads. His 1999 release "Twenty Years" features performances from concerts and radio broadcast and includes the only version now available of "Boogie Man Gonna Git Ya", as well as other rare gems. His 2002 release "Let's Eat" is a best of collection of his best known food songs of which there are many! Both of his latest albums are available on Chicken Legs Music. All of his albums prior to the 1990's are hard to find except for the first Catfish Band album "Get Down", which Sony/Epic re-released in the mid 1990's, due to demand for it overseas.
Catfish found his calling early on. While growing up in Detroit, he was sneaking into Motown Records Hitsville studio to catch the Four tops and the Supremes and grooving to R&B and Blues while his contemporaries gravitated to the Beatles. In the late 1960’s he formed the Catfish Band and led them out of Detroit into national prominence.
By 1973 Catfish had settled into Washington, DC where he was packing them in at Desperado’s, Childe Harold and the Cellar Door with what the Washington City Paper describes as "his cheerfully muscular blues & rockin’ boogie". He made a few friends along the way too. He became a regular opener for Bonnie Raitt and Little Feat, who also started showing up on his recordings. When he formed the Chicken Legs Band in 1981, he was joined by Little Feat’s Paul Barrere, Richie Hayward, Kenny Gradney and Sam Clayton. Their final tour hit twenty one cities and sold out every one.
By 1982 Catfish had headed west to California where he lived for the next 17 years. Along with Paul Barrere he formed the Bluesbusters in 1984. They recorded two albums for Landslide Records and toured for many years, until Little Feat was reformed in the late 1980’s.
In 1999 Catfish founded the Hillbilly Funk Allstars with T Lavitz, Richie Hayward, Kenny Gradney, and Vassar Clements. Their first tour was well received, with great turn outs, will they ever tour again? He continues to work solo acoustic and with his new electric band in the mid-atlantic area, as well as festivals around the globe.
Today Catfish Hodge lives in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, where he says "the air is fresh and the mountains are good for the healing of the soul." After thirty five years on the road and twenty four albums having been released, he is still electrifying music fans with his powerful and spiritual style of original music!
An evening with Catfish is a raucous romp through life’s occurrences, punctuated with his unique insights and wit. While critics struggle to classify his sound, calling it “Delta jazz”, "Southern rock", or “rhythm and blues”, Catfish just keeps on keepin’ on, pleasing the crowd with his right-on songs and electrifying stage presence.

The Assassins with Jimmy Thackery and Tom Principoto

Here are two Vinyl LP's of The Assassins from my collection recorded to one CD and then ripped to my hard drive. I got these from Joe's Record Paradise a couple of 5 years ago or so.

No Previous Record
Talk To Me
I'll Come Running Back

Girl From Impanema

Tom Principoto has done brief stints with various acts including Billy Price And The Keystone Rhythm Band, Big Mama Thornton, Sunnyland Slim, James Montgomery, and The Assassins with Jimmy Thackery, former guiatrist with The Nighthawks. Tom Principoto appears on two albums with the Assassins, "No Previous Record" (1986) and "Partners In Crime" (1987) which won a "Wammy Award".

Jimmy Thackery became widely known as the innovative guitarist with the Nighthawks, one of the hardest-working and most popular blues bands of the '70's and '80's. Starting in 1974, the group recorded over twenty albums and constantly toured the U.S., Europe, Canada and Japan. Jimmy was the heart, soul, and adrenaline of the Nighthawks sound during his fourteen year tenure with the Washington, D.C.-based band, creating a distinctively raw, powerful guitar style and establishing a reputation as a spectacular soloist.

Thackery comes by his six-string brilliance honestly, having learned from the very best sources. Besides Buddy Guy and Jimi Hendrix, Thackery cites Chicago axe master Otis Rush as a primary influence. Moreover, he learned quite a bit from playing on stage alongside such blues legends as Muddy Waters, James Cotton and Luther "Guitar Junior" Johnson.

Thackery left the Nighthawks in 1987, needing a break from a grueling 300-night-a-year touring schedule. He also felt a need to try something new musically, so Thackery founded a six piece R&B band called The Assassins. The popular and critically-acclaimed group recorded three albums before disbanding in 1991.

The artwork is pretty poor. I have a small flatbed scanner and had to take 4 scans of each side of the album covers, reconstruct them in Publisher, print to Adobe Acrobat Distiller, then took a screen shot, saved to Paint, then cropped the rough edges and saved again. All this because noone is going to find these album covers in cyberspace. But if by chance you do please send me a link and I'll repost better covers.
These are two ultra rare LPs, never released on CD. And these two are mint!

WHFS 102.3 Bethesda, MD: Adele 01-08-1983 Saturday Morning

This is DJ Adele recorded Jan 08 1983, Saturday morning, 10:00-11:30 AM right after Dick Lillard's Roots of Rock show. One of the cool things about ripping these tapes, is rediscovering music from the past, then searching the blogs and e-bay, Amazon, etc. looking for those albums that I don't own yet. Widespread Depression Orchestra from this tape is one of those. There is a CD on Amazon for $198.00. Holy crap! I'll get an album or two from these guys sooner or later. Edit: Just won the album pictured above! I love that Texas Swing boogie type music.

This Little Feat Live From The Warner Theater in 1976 cassette tape, was recorded from WHFS on Oct 18 1988. Tom T hosted the radio program that evening. The beginning of this tape, perhaps the 1st two minutes or so is a bit flaky with the sound being tinkered with. After that it smoothes out and is a nice sounding tid bit of the Feat from 1976.

Chicken Legs and the Nighthawks, Live at the Warner Theater

Here is my open reel tape of Chicken Legs and the Nighthawks, live at the Warner Theater. My tape is labeled Nov 21 1980 and states that the show was taped off of WWDC DC-101. The date could be inaccurate as I have Googled this show and found a similar show without as many Nighthawks tunes as I have here, and it is dated Nov 18 1980 and states that the show was taped off of WAVA. I believe there was a 3 or 4 night stand at the Warner Theater, so it's possible I'm correct in the shows date and radio station I taped it from. Also this sounds like the last night, because Paul Barerre mentions how much fun they have had here with the Nighthawks and how much they love DC. It's also possible it could have been re-aired. Hell it's been 27 years since I recorded this show off the radio so who knows for sure. The poster above shows the date of the 17th of November.
Whatever....This sounds great! It starts off a bit shaky for a minute or so then everything settles down and the sound is very good for the next 94 minutes. I ran out of tape during "Down On The Farm"...bummer. But hey, you get 95 minutes of The Nighthawks and Chicken Legs from 1980!

1) "Love Me Or Leave" by The Nighthawks (6:49)
2) "Back To the City" by The Nighthawks (3:36)
3) "You Got To Live For Yourself" by The Nighthawks (2:20)
4) "Pretty Girls And Cadillacs" by The Nighthawks (5:05)
5) "Little Sister" by The Nighthawks (6:44)
6) "I Wouldn't Treat A Dog" by The Nighthwaks (6:35)
7) "Tripe Face Boogie" by The Nighthawks (3:23)
8) "Holiday" by Chicken Legs (4:10)
9) "Down Over The Border" by Chicken Legs (3:49)
10) "I Got That Record Executive Blues Again" by Chicken Legs (5:19)
11) "Drown In A Sea Of Love" by Chicken Legs (4:01)
12) "Old Folks Boogie" by Chicken Legs (5:11)
13) "I Got a Mess of the Blues" by Chicken Legs (4:17)
14) "Apolitical Blues-Boogie Man Blues" by Chicken Legs (7:40)
15) "High Roller" by Chicken Legs (5:17)
16) "Stay All Night" by Chicken Legs (5:21)
17) "Pump It Up" by Chicken Legs (3:19)
18) "Band Intros" by Chicken Legs (3:47)
19) "Elmo's Blues, Down On the Farm (incomplete)" by Chicken Legs (8:35)

Chicken Legs Line Up:

Cowboy Jazz: "Swing Boogie" and "That's What We Like About The West" Vinyl LP Rips

The text below was shamelessly copied from cyberspace.

edit: http://rhumba.com/alaska/cowboy_jazz.html

Cowboy Jazz existed in a variety of forms during its seven-year history. The band pictured above is likely the band that logged the most miles, though in fairness, it is possible an earlier configuration featuring drummer Charlie Crane holds that distinction.

Taken by Road Manager Nick Sharp, outside Washington DC's legendary rock'n'roll haunt Desperados, this photo became the back photo for the group's second LP, Swing Boogie.

Personnel (L-R) are:

Tony DeFontes (bass), Denise Carlson (fiddle, vocals), Kate Bennett (vocals, rhythm guitar), Barry Sless (lead and steel guitars), Brian Alpert (drums), Deanna Bogart (piano, saxophone, vocals).

Cowboy Jazz's "That's What We Like About the West" is a cross between traditional pop vocal groups, western swing and country-rock -- a unique and heady brew of roots music that never stays in one place for too long. The group runs through a number of standards -- including country songs like "Cow-Cow Boogie" and "Hey Good Lookin'" and pop songs like "Sophisticated Mind" -- as well as originals that are in the same vein. It's great fun that sounds unlike anything in country and roots music. ~ Thom Owens, All Music Guide

Mastered by Bob Ludwig at Masterdisk, N.Y.C. Front cover painting by Pasqual D'Angelo. Photos by Ollie Krieger. Design by Pasqualino & Murray Brenman. Bruce Kulick - Lead Guitar, Joe Franco - Drums, Peppi Marchello - Lead Vocals, Mickey Marchello - Guitars, Vocals, Schuyler Deale - Bass Guitar.

Naming their seventh album Great American Music may be the only way veteran Long Island bar band the Good Rats will ever call attention to the fact that they've been making terrific American rock & roll for over a decade. By forging songwriter-lead vocalist Peppi Marchello's snappily offbeat hooks and wolfish howls on a neo-heavy-metal anvil of raucous guitars and robust rhythms, the Rats have developed a formidable and intoxicating sound that's one of rock's best-kept secrets.

Commercially, Great American Music might succeed where recent Good Rats records like From Rats to Riches and Birth Comes to Us All haven't, because the group has finally captured on vinyl both the hardy rock & roll spirit of its songs and the combustible crunch it musters in concert. "Julie" moves to a strident 6/4 beat, while "Audience" is built on a remarkably catchy hook hung on the rather unwieldy phrase "two-hankie tear-jerker." "On My Way to School" is a simple tune of childhood past. These numbers are cranked out with the same urgency as the hamfisted raver "New York Survivor" and the celebratory "Great American Music Halls," in which Marchello manages to catch the entire touring experience in a four-minute microcosm. Even the LP's one ballad, "Oh So Good," holds its own on the strength of Marchello's fiery vocal and the aggressive guitars of his brother Mickey and new recruit Bruce Kulick.

What comes through loudest and clearest on Great American Music is the Rats' unshakable commitment to the music they play. As Peppi Marchello shouts in "Rock and Roll Point of View": "It's a way of life for a lucky few/It's a love affair and It must be true/It's rock & roll good-time Point Of View." (RS 347)

Good Washington Post Article About Damian Einstein, Harp Player and
Deejay

Damian the Deejay: The Show Must Go On
Protests, Legal Rulings and Fan Ingenuity Have Helped
Keep Revered Radio Legend on Air for Three Decades

• 'A Beautiful Cat'

By Manuel Roig-Franzia
Washington Post Staff Writer
Thursday, December 13, 2001; Page AA14

The voice is impossible to ignore. Words come out
moist and slushy, tumbling over the airwaves in
breathy gusts.

The cadence, strong and resolute one moment, can
suddenly turn thin and halting. Syllables slide into
each other before untangling and lurching forward.
Then, it all cascades downward, landing in a jumbled
heap. It is, undeniably, a marvelous mash -- earnest,
labored, unvarnished.

But it vanishes before you can get your mind around
it, replaced by a jangly guitar or a whiff of
Mississippi Delta blues.

The voice compels, even if you've never heard of
Damian Einstein or his 30-year radio odyssey -- the
heady days as a pioneer of alternative rock at WHFS;
the near-fatal truck crash in 1975 that twisted his
bones and altered his speech; the doctor-defying
recovery; the protests when he was yanked off the air
because of his stammer; the return to the airwaves and
the mid-life ascendancy to cult figure status at tiny
WRNR in Annapolis, where, at 51, he is now celebrating
three decades of murmuring into microphones.

None of this history is necessary to make you lean
forward, spin the volume knob, shush your friends in
the back seat. The voice stands out on its own. It
somehow seems to say, this guy has really lived.

Muse of Main Street

Hours before his 7 p.m. show, Damian wanders onto Main
Street through the front door of a fudge shop beneath
WRNR's cluttered third-floor office, methodically
picking past the tourists on his way to coffee shops
and music stores.

He is instantly recognizable, a rock-and-roll version
of Mark Twain with a thick, unruly mustache and a
great mound of shaggy salt-and-pepper hair left
windblown by his daily meanderings around the City
Dock. He cuts his hair, he said, only when "I start to
look like I'm with the band."

The crash that changed Damian's voice also left his
right arm cocked at a 90-degree angle. He walks with a
determined, yet wobbly gait, even when he is leaning
on one of the dozen custom-made canes that he keeps in
a brass canister at his Potomac town house.

His strolls are invariably interrupted. Longtime
listeners approach him reverentially, almost as if
they're making a pilgrimage. Eager guys in concert
T-shirts slide home-pressed CDs into his hands, and
scruffy stagehands tell tales of some kid from
Hagerstown who can draw lightning from a six-string
guitar.

It is no surprise that they seek him out. Damian made
his reputation in the early 1970s by prowling D.C.
nightclubs in search of unknown talent, culling places
such as the Cellar Door for new sounds. He played
Bonnie Raitt, Emmylou Harris, John Prine and dozens of
others before they got famous.

Many became friends. He pops into Prine's house in
Nashville for coffee and hangs out with Little Feat
drummer Richie Hayward in Los Angeles. Raitt has
dedicated songs to him at local concerts, and Steve
Miller once dragged him on stage to play the
harmonica, knowing that Damian was an accomplished
player who sometimes sat in with bluesman J.B. Hutto
and others.

Damian's marquee show at WRNR-FM (103.1) is called
"Damian's Local Diner," a unscripted romp with
musicians playing live in studio that airs from 9 to
10 p.m. Thursdays. The acts range from polished
performers on international tours to bar bands whose
members have day jobs.

"He is so important to local musicians; he gives them
a place to be heard," said Wayne Kahn, owner of Right
On Rhythm, a company that produces compilations of
songs by area musicians. "He supported them, played
them and gave them a voice."

The scheduling of Damian's Diner is loose, and there
is almost always some doubt about who will actually
appear. One night recently, it looked as if Damian had
been stood up. He was fumbling through a stack of CDs
to fill the void when Hazey Jane, a group from
Baltimore, wandered into the station five minutes
before show time.

Damian can be jumpy and agitated as he prepares for
his show. But once he gets started, his demeanor
changes. The placid Main Street stroller returns. The
music pacifies him. The studio, with its threadbare
carpet and its splintered plastic clock for timing
shows, is his comfort zone.

So when Hazey Jane arrived, Damian calmly poked his
head into the hallway and pointed out that they only
had minutes to prepare, to which the band's frontman,
Jeff Ploughman, replied: "Oh, so we've got time to go
get a beer?"

Persuaded that they ought to forgo a trip to the bar,
band members -- a collection of computer technicians
and chemical salesmen -- wedged into the tiny WRNR
studio. The guitar player crammed into one corner with
his elbows hiked up, another guy sat with his drum
between his legs.

"I'm a little nervous," Ploughman said, as the
broadcast began.

"I understand," Damian said, reassuringly. "I'm a
little nervous, too."

They both laughed, and suddenly everything was okay.

Warm Milk and Hippies

The fifth of seven children, Damian grew up in Denton,
a chicken farming town on the Eastern Shore. His
father, the irrepressible Jake Einstein, worked in
newspaper and radio sales at the time but later would
make a fortune by buying and selling WHFS and WRNR.
Jake Einstein is Jewish, but he sent Damian to a
Catholic school in Easton.

"No loud smiling during prayers -- that's what the
nuns always told me," Damian said.

He got his musical education at home, where he
remembers being "knocked out" by his parents' Billie
Holliday records. He sneaked into the Eastern Shore's
black-owned music clubs, where he was often the only
white face in the crowd listening to bands such as
Noonie and the Enchanted Heartbreakers.

He moved to Bethesda with his mother during his junior
year in high school after his parents divorced. A
child of the 1960s, he made the requisite,
post-graduation road trip to Southern California in a
sputtering van with a bunch of long-haired buddies. He
studied graphic design there for a year, before
returning to Bethesda and going to work selling ads at
WHFS, where his father was a sales manager.

In 1971, he got a job as WHFS's overnight deejay, a
less than coveted shift, but one that allowed him to
experiment freely with playing a range of musical
styles.

"He'd play a 10-minute Miles Davis song, then come
back with rock-and-roll, then some really deep blues,
like Jimmy Reed or John Lee Hooker," said Joe Lee, who
manages bands and owns Joe's Record Paradise in
Rockville.

As he developed a loyal following and moved to more
high-profile shifts, his studio became a regular stop
for anyone who played blues or Southern roots music or
new forms of rock-and-roll.

Bruce Springsteen visited Damian at WHFS before the
kids in the mall knew he was the Boss. Long before
Springsteen sold out stadiums, he played to small
audiences at the Childe Harold in Dupont Circle.
Damian was backstage.

"Bruce had this awful cold," recalled Patti Ebbert, a
WHFS ad rep who later became Damian's second wife. "He
kept asking us for warm milk. Warm milk, warm milk."

The parties invariably slipped out of the clubs and
back to Damian's farmhouse in Germantown. Lee
remembers jam sessions that lasted for days; once an
entire contingent of bluegrass players from a
Smithsonian festival made their way to Damian's place.
"He was real crazy . . . a big risk-taker," Lee said.
"It was a wild hippie time. Hippies all over the
place."

Harmonic Awakening

The heady ramble ended on a cold December night in
1975 when Damian got a ride with his pal Rubber
Wagner, inspiration for Damian's late-night "Rubber
Buddy Hours" show at WHFS. The pickup truck skidded on
an icy patch in a vacant Bethesda field they were
using as a shortcut, shearing off the cab when it
smashed into a bridge. Wagner and another friend, Toby
Nealis, were killed.

Damian, then 25, lay in a coma at Holy Cross Hospital.
He didn't move for four months.

His doctors, certain he would not live, wanted to take
him off life support, but his father and Ebbert talked
them out of it. His prognosis was so bad the doctors
didn't bother to set the eight fractures in each of
his arms or to discover his broken neck, broken jaw
and a host of other fractured bones. But friends kept
a vigil anyway.

One night, some pals dragged the Chicago blues
virtuoso Carey Bell into the hospital room after a
Cellar Door gig.

"He wasn't winning no beauty contests, I tell you,"
Bell said.

Bell did the only thing he could think of: He reached
for Damian's limp fingers with one hand and started
riffing on a harmonica clutched in his other. He
played for about three minutes, he recalled, then he
felt something. Damian, a harmonica player himself,
was squeezing Bell's hand ever so slightly. A few bars
later, Damian opened his eyes. It was the first time
since the crash.

The voice was born not long after. Ebbert was in the
room.

"He said," she remembered, " 'Where's Rubber?' "

Really Beautiful Cats

Damian won't talk about the night of the crash. Won't
talk about much of anything that is too painful or
personal.

Conversations with him branch and circle when there is
a good song on the stereo. Guitar chords distract him.
He can't ignore a brash tenor saxophone or a wheezing
harmonica.

He stops in mid-sentence, jabs an index finger in the
direction of the stereo speaker. A childlike grin
crosses his face.

"You hear that?" he says urgently. "You hear that
tenor sax? Man, I really love tenor sax."

Soon, he is tracing the bloodlines of the band,
recounting a dizzying trail of bass players who left
one group to form another, then hooked up with some
guys from Chicago, only to break up again and go on
the road with another lineup.

He describes the musicians as "cats," that is, unless
he's calling them "beautiful cats" or "really
beautiful cats." Their songs are "dynamite."

Shelves holding a lifetime of records, held together
by brown packing tape and frayed from years of
handling, line the basement of his modest town house
in Potomac.

Each record holds a memory of a long-ago concert or a
late-night interview: Dr. John, NRBQ, the Flying
Burrito Brothers. Tonight he has found an obscure solo
album by Fingers Taylor, who plays in Jimmy Buffett's
band. "This cat," Damian says, "He's all right."

He flips the record over and over. You get the idea he
could stay down here forever.

The Push to Walk

After coming out of the coma, Damian for a time
thought he was 14 years old again, when a fall had
landed him in the hospital. This time, he spent two
years in rehabilitation, in and out of hospitals. He
then moved into an apartment above WHFS, lifting
weights to restore his atrophied muscles and making
tentative steps to resume his on-air duties.

Not surprisingly, he turned to his records for relief.
A Steely Dan song about an acupuncturist named Dr. Wu
intrigued him. He knew that Dr. Wu, who practiced in
the Washington area, had helped Steely Dan's Donald
Fagan overcome drug addiction.

Ebbert found Dr. Wu, who slowly loosened Damian's
rigid muscles. By then, Damian's first marriage had
broken up, and Ebbert was a constant companion.

Damian wanted to marry her. But she made him wait,
insisting that he walk first. It was her way of
pushing him, and it worked. Four years after the
crash, they flew to New Orleans and were married under
oak trees draped with Spanish moss in City Park, a few
blocks from the site of Jazz Fest, which Damian has
attended almost every year since the mid-1960s.

"That was when he really started to evolve," said
Hayward, the Little Feat drummer. "He grew up a lot in
that short period of time. . . . He was very much less
the party animal."

An On-Air Icon

Damian returned to the air in late 1977, manning one
shift a week before eventually resuming full-time
duties. Everything was harder. The once-familiar
controls -- the gaggle of lights and levers -- were
maddeningly difficult to navigate.

But the old touch returned, and so did the listeners,
quickly embracing the new voice with the familiar
name.

Damian's speech impairment didn't matter much until
his father sold WHFS to Duchossois Industries Inc., a
garage door and machine gun ammunition manufacturer.
In 1989, the station's new manager pulled Damian out
of his regular deejay shift, making him an assistant
programming director and relegating him to short music
drop-in spots. The station called it a promotion, but
Damian's friends and fans were outraged.

A grass-roots rebellion sprung up, culminating in a
protest concert attended by more than 8,000 people.
Guitar legend Danny Gatton played, so did Catfish
Hodge, the D.C. folk and blues standout. Hayward flew
in from Los Angeles.

The concert rallied support, but it took a
discrimination suit, 18 months of legal wrangling and
a 1990 ruling from the Maryland Human Rights
Commission to get him back on the air.

"It was a nasty battle," Damian said. "It was a hell."

He stayed at WHFS for almost four years, before
resigning in 1994 and moving to WRNR, the station that
his father had bought and transformed into a free-form
venue.

Jake Einstein eventually sold the station, but Damian
has remained, first as the keeper of a format that let
deejays play whatever they wanted, and most recently
as a defender of the station's decision to move to a
more structured format with play lists.

WRNR, which draws about 1 percent of radio listening
time in Arbitron's survey of the Baltimore-area market
and ranks 24th out of 31 stations, still plays artists
that aren't widely heard elsewhere, acts such as John
Hiatt, Widespread Panic and Graham Parker. But there
also is less freedom for jocks, more repetition and an
infusion of mainstream pop performers.

Some of the station's longtime followers howled.
Damian, though, didn't lend his voice to the clash.
He's never been much for protests. Even in the '60s,
it was the music -- not the sit-ins -- that captivated
him.

"Take Me Home, Ambrose"

Just before midnight, Damian invariably cues up
"Two-Step de Palten," by Cajun accordionist Ambrose
Thibodeaux, whom he met decades ago on a Louisiana
road trip. He has played the song at the end of every
show for 30 years, signing off with the words, "Take
me home, Ambrose," a habit that both amused and
baffled Thibodeaux, who died in 1997 at age 92.

A small core of loyal listeners will go to great
lengths to pick up Damian's show, trading tips on the
Internet about ways to overcome WRNR's faint
6,000-watt signal.

Tom Donohoe, 43, installed a directional antenna on
the roof of his Lanham home. This summer, Donohoe
snapped pictures of the deejay during one of "Damian's
Blues Cruises," a monthly jaunt on the Chesapeake Bay
that the station devised to capitalize on his
notoriety.

"A lot of people respect that he's been through a lot
of difficulties," said Michael H. O'Sullivan, a
commercial shipping engineer who stood at the edge of
the party boat's dance floor. "I thought, at first,
'This guy shouldn't be a deejay -- just listen to him
talk.' But the more I listened to him talk, the more I
appreciated his knowledge."

Mark Wenner, "Nothin' But" Vinyl Lp

Here's a vinyl rip from my collection of an out of print LP from The Nighthawks Harpist, Mark Wenner.

[A harp-blowing, multi-tattooed belter of blues, Wenner fronted Washington, D.C.'s...the Nighthawks for a bunch of years and has finally gone solo. The result is this fine, nondescript passel of a dozen odes to drinkin', carousin' and generally livin' the blues life...Wenner is a fine harp man, and...his stylish, if understated, backing band...includes the assertive guitar of Bob Margolin and the fat burbling upright bass of Jeff Sarli. Wenner's gritty, throaty vocals are perfectly suited for standard raunch like "Rollin' and Tumblin'" and "Nothin' But the Devil," and he acquits himself like a pro... ~ John Dougan, Option 27_89, All Music Guide]

The Nighthawks Hot Spot Vinyl LP

Here's what The Nighthawks website has to say about this album...

"As they worked on their next album for Varrick, the band wanted to do a simple, straightforward blues/rock recording that represented what they were all about. Unfortunately, the producer and record company wanted a more pop, radio friendly sound. The differing perspectives made this one of the more challenging studio sessions for the band. The resulting album, “Hot Spot,” was released in 1983 and was more a reflection of what the record company wanted than what the band did. In an ironic twist, it was at about this same time that Stevie Ray Vaughn’s first album, Texas Flood, won critical praise and created renewed interest in the blues."

The Nighthawks Live At The Bayou, New Years Eve 1981

I Can't believe it took me this long to get this open reel tape ripped to my hard drive. From the Bayou, in Washington, DC it's The Nighthawks live, New Years Eve 1981, broadcast live on WAVA 105.1 FM. This bad boy rock-n-rolls! Jimmy Thackery was still with the band. Sound quality is excellent. Hard to believe it is 27 years old! Tape starts abruptly in the middle of the 1st show and ends abruptly early into the second show. Oh well, stuff happens.

The Dynatones - Shameless

This is a rip from my collection of The Dynatones vinyl LP Shameless.

Label: Warner Bros 25672-1
Release Date: 1988
The Dynatones - Shameless / 1988 Warner Bros 25672-1

Led by drummer Walter Shufflesworth, the Dynatones is very much a group effort. The son of Travis Edmondson of folk-singing duo, Bud and Travis, guitarist Steve Edmondson, worked with James Cotton, Van Morrison and Maria Muldaur, as well as with his father, with whom he shared an early-1980s duo. Bass player "Colonel" Bill Singleton previously played with Gladys Knight, Snooky Prior, Jimmy Rogers, James Cotton and Luther Tucker. Big Walter, who serves as the band's emcee, previously toured with Big Joe Turner, Lightnin' Hopkins and Mary Wells' Motown Revue.

The Dynatones's horn section remains its aural centerpiece. Trumpet player, Mike Rose, previously worked with Buddy Ace, Bobby Womack and Todd Rundgreen, while trombone player Mike Rinta's resume includes stints with Buddy Guy, Carlos Santana, Wayne Shorter, Jerry Garica, Bob Weir and Herbie Hancock. Tenor saxophonist Eric “Youngblood Bertaud is a former member of Sly and the Family Stone. All Music

WHFS 99.1 Tapes Shared by Josh: Summer/Fall 1985 and January 1987

I just got finished posting my last WHFS tape, then Josh sends me another great batch of his tapes. Josh, you are THE Man!

Josh Wrote:
"Here are three tapes. The first is from Summer, Fall 85. The last two are January 87. There was a big snow storm that day, so I stayed home and made tapes. Every once and a while the DJs will reference the snow.

I have another unidentified song, if anyone can help. Not entirely sure about the lyrics, you'll hear it on tape 13 B.

I watch TV and I talk to the animals
I rule the world as I watch That's Incredible
I can't see my future, but I do know my fate
And when I get there, it will be worth the wait.

Chorus
Nothing is special anymore
Nothing is easier for sure

Very sad to hear about Tom T. I have a couple of tapes with him, one in particular where he goes on a rant: "I don't do no request shows." The quality is pretty dismal, but I'll upload them later this week.

Squeeze, Talking Heads, The Alarm, Roger Daltry, The Who, Lou Reed, Jim Carroll (doing Lou Reed),
Neil Young, Little Feat, Dave Edmunds, The Ramones, Greg Kihn, Cure, Tom Waits, Delbert McClinton, Jackson Brown, Joe Jackson, Elvis Costello, REM, Grateful Dead

Minimal Compact, XTC, Roxy Music, Peter Himmelman, The English Beat, U2, Weasel Theme, Blondie, Cure, Weird Al, DEVO, Dave Edmunds, Kirsty MacColl, Robert Palmer, Go Gos, Elvis Costello, Big Dish (brief appearance by Tom T), Johnny Sportcoat, Hooters, Rootboy Slim

Whack Attack, U2, Tirez Tirez, Grateful Dead, BoDeans, Beatles, Bangles, Pretenders, Pete Townshend, Barone and Mastro, Peter Case, The Rave Ups, Zappa, Jo Boxer, Elvis Costello, Joe Jackson, New Order, REM

Thanks for all the incredible shares. It's driving my wife crazy, but I'm having a great time."

Thanks again Josh!

WHFS by this time period was definetley moving to a more commercial format. Good tunes here, but as I say, more commercialized.
This should be my last post of WHFS tapes taped by me. I was pretty much done with WHFS from here on out. So much self promotion and so on. It was clear the WHFS we all knew and loved was turning into DC-101 or 98 Rock tho maybe still leaning toward the progressive side.
No matter, because, that same time period WRNR came on the scene and it was a breathe of fresh air. With some of the same DJ's, and ownership, from the old 'HFS, we were treated to almost a decade of quality "Freeform, Progressive" radio once again.
Of course 'RNR would follow in 'HFS's steps and go commercial too. Sadly I guess that's how it goes.
On a side note, I would urge all you WHFS fans to see my other posts for WXCL, the predecessor of WRNR and downoad those 18 tapes. All from 1994, they were a bit more leaning towards hard rock, and a bit commercialized in my opinion, yet they were a damn fine radio station in my opinion. And if you like 70's hard rock, then you MUST download the WGTB tapes I have posted in here. And yes, please listen to them and leave feedback.
Next up, my WRNR tapes...I will still post other WHFS tapes shared by my readers and if I stumble across anymore, or get motivated enough, I still have a handful of open reel tapes that still need to be ripped to my hard drive. Including the last WHFS tape from 102.3 FM, when I watched my signal strengh meter on my tuner drop to zero when Weasel played the last song. I almost cried!
Whew...what a work out. Now, don't just download 'em, listen to them, and post some feedback please.

edit: I still need to post the rest of the WHFS tapes shared by Bob...I've only shared 2 of the 17 CD's so far of these. Each CD contains almost 700MB of tapes ripped to MP3 @ 160kbps.

What This Is All About

I've been collecting live music from various sources since the mid to late 70's. Radio shows, TV broadcasts, radio show pre-FM CD's and vinyl LP's and some trades. Most of the shows posted here, I recorded and ripped myself. I always had top of the line stereo equipment and cassette and open reel recorders for those on air broadcasts.
I've downloaded plenty of bootlegged concerts from various blogs. As a rule I will only post stuff from my collection and not what is already available out there.
I also post out of print CDs and LPs from my collection.
I will repost from my readers anything someone sends me as long as it is either out of print or something that's not from someone else's blog. If you want to share a link for a cool item on your blog, or someone else's, please feel free to post it in the comments........
Enjoy and please leave a comment and pass this blog along.
Can you believe that so many out there are starving for the old WHFS? Amazing!
If you leave a comment, how about using a nickname instead of Anonymous. At least make up something please. Thanks!
