WHFS DAVID 02-25-1983 3 HOUR OPEN REEL TAPE

This post is from another tape in my open reel collection of WHFS DJ David. Originally recorded to CD then ripped to my hard drive. It is split into 3 folders, 3hours long, taped in the afternoon of Friday, Feb 25 1983. The U2 War album was being released that day or there abouts. Some great music from the day. It's a shame the sorry state of radio in the U.S. today.

Why? That's all I want to know. Why did the music just go bad? And can I listen to old HFS tapes until I go deaf? Not a bad idea. Thanks.

very few independent radio stations anymore in the U.S. thanks to deregulation. It's all been monopololized. That's why the internet is taking over as the place to go to find out what's really going on with quality music.
And yes, listen to the old tapes till you go deaf!

My brother had a few 8-track tapes recorded from WHFS back in the early 80s. I remember them very well. I think WHFS started to fall off in the 90s, but before that - they had a very rich history of independence within the DC airwaves. Now there is no more WHFS. No more Jazz '90. No more Flava 1580 AM. No more WCVT (89.7fm Towson). And WPFW is barely hanging on, with much less 'progressive' programming than they had in years past. The FM radio landscape is a very very bleak place these days - at least in the DC area. Thanks for these amazing tape rips!

Saying the FM radio landscape in the DC are is very very bleak, is an understatement. F-uck it...I feel sorry for the X & Y generation that doesn't get the exposure from great stations like we did. But there getting there music from blogs and other places on the internet. Can you imagine, if we could have shared back then what our music collections would look like now? Just acouple of fat disk drives and no LP's, Tapes, or CD's...

wonder why the dude that left the WCVT tape comment deleted it?

oh shit my bad. the url only partially showed up after I posted the comment so i said fuck it and deleted it. but you got to the post anyways! magic. wait no, probably just an email notice of comment. still, magic. agreed on the 'youth of today' as it were. I dunno. I feel like even the 'rebellious' popular music being marketed to these kids is just mostly manufactured by major record labels. Most 'metal' coming out has requisite emo sing-songy parts amidst the metal - and that's not metal. I still don't get the Emo thing, but I think it's supposedly the sorta gothy/punky/leavemealone music of this generation. I'm sure there's alot of kids out there who are in the fray, as we were - but I just feel like even with the internet and so much access - things just aren't like they were 20 years ago. sorry for the culture rant

What This Is All About

I've been collecting live music from various sources since the mid to late 70's. Radio shows, TV broadcasts, radio show pre-FM CD's and vinyl LP's and some trades. Most of the shows posted here, I recorded and ripped myself. I always had top of the line stereo equipment and cassette and open reel recorders for those on air broadcasts.

I've downloaded plenty of bootlegged concerts from various blogs. As a rule I will only post stuff from my collection and not what is already available out there.

I also post out of print CDs and LPs from my collection.
I will repost from my readers anything someone sends me as long as it is either out of print or something that's not from someone else's blog. If you want to share a link for a cool item on your blog, or someone else's, please feel free to post it in the comments........

Enjoy and please leave a comment and pass this blog along.

Can you believe that so many out there are starving for the old WHFS? Amazing!

If you leave a comment, how about using a nickname instead of Anonymous. At least make up something please. Thanks!

I have reconsidered my position...and will re-upload dead links, so long as you go to that particular post and make the request from the comments page...
