Ellen Foley: Another Breath Vinyl LP Rip

Here's a cool artist I knew nothing about until someone on the audiokarma.org music forum kept going on and on about how good she was. Then one day I was ripping a WHFS tape and David plays her cover of Robert Palmer's "Johnny And Mary". It sounded so nice I had to play it twice! I bought the vinyl LP on e-bay for a couple of bucks and was pleasently surprised. Check her out...

Her first big break was singing the duet with Meat Loaf on "Paradise by the Dashboard Light" from the 1977 album Bat out of Hell. Although Karla DeVito is featured on the video, she is miming to Foley's vocals.

She can be heard on The Clash album Sandinista! in the song "Hitsville UK". All four members of The Clash appeared on her 1981 album The Spirit of St. Louis and Mick Jones and Joe Strummer co-wrote a number of songs for the album. The Clash's hit song "Should I Stay or Should I Go", written and sung by Mick Jones, from the Combat Rock album, was about the turbulent relationship he shared with Foley at the time.

Foley also recorded a memorable duet in 1980 with Ian Hunter, "We Gotta Get Outta Here". She later sang on Joe Jackson's 1984 album Body and Soul, most notably on the duet with Jackson entitled "Happy Ending".

As Ellen Foley published her third LP "Another Breath" in 1983, again she turned heads by being able to have Vini Poncia as a producer. He is well known for his successful work with Leo Sayer and Ringo Starr. The experienced expert in audio mixing discovered refinements in Ellen Foley's voice that must have escaped his predecessors. Spectacular interpretations of songs such as "Johnny And Mary" (Robert Palmer), "Come And Get These Memories" (Holland/Dozier/Holland) and "Let Me Be The One You Love" (by cult-composer-team Desmond Child and David Landau) again brought her the best critiques in all major music publications. Full of enthusiasm "Music Week" wrote: "Who could have thought that Robert Palmer would be so happy about a cover-version of his hit. The whole album is along these lines: sparingly used arrangements, good songs and above all this voice that doesn't bore you for a minute."

I like it a lot, but why such low bitrates on these vinyl-rips. It really breaks down the audio quality, just like Ian Lloyd?

cause that's how I got 'em ripped to my hard drive, way before I gave any thought to sharing my tunes on this blog. The CD is available on Amazon with bounus tracks if you want it bad enough, and if you want Ian Lloyd bad enough, the LP is available as well.

Just listened to Joe Jackson's Body and Soul on vinyl...what a treat to hear Ellen Foley as a background singer on that LP and then to find this post. Thanks for the Ellen Foley LP you posted here.

It's amazing what can be re-discovered when listening to the old radio tapes on here...

Kayaker, I just listened to this jem. Very nice vinyl rip. I listened using my laptop and a pair of Sennheiser headphones. The .wma files only have a slight tinny sound...the bass was good. Not bad at all for the bit rate!

The "Johnny and Mary" Robert Palmer cover is one I had to listen to many many times over. Weasel and the gangealways found a way to sneak some Ellen Foley into their HFS shows. Thanks for this rip.

And not bad for free eh?

That cover of Johnny and Mary is so good, I gotta here it twice too!
A rare event for me to replay a tune. But it really releases the endorphins!

What This Is All About

I've been collecting live music from various sources since the mid to late 70's. Radio shows, TV broadcasts, radio show pre-FM CD's and vinyl LP's and some trades. Most of the shows posted here, I recorded and ripped myself. I always had top of the line stereo equipment and cassette and open reel recorders for those on air broadcasts.

I've downloaded plenty of bootlegged concerts from various blogs. As a rule I will only post stuff from my collection and not what is already available out there.

I also post out of print CDs and LPs from my collection.
I will repost from my readers anything someone sends me as long as it is either out of print or something that's not from someone else's blog. If you want to share a link for a cool item on your blog, or someone else's, please feel free to post it in the comments........

Enjoy and please leave a comment and pass this blog along.

Can you believe that so many out there are starving for the old WHFS? Amazing!

If you leave a comment, how about using a nickname instead of Anonymous. At least make up something please. Thanks!

I have reconsidered my position...and will re-upload dead links, so long as you go to that particular post and make the request from the comments page...
