Old 97's Live DVD Audio Rip

This post is an audio rip from my Old 97's Live DVD.
Old 97's Live underscores how one of the premier alt-country, No Depression bands of the 1990s has become a truly eclectic, power pop quartet with a gritty folk heart and penchant for lyrical mischief. ("You're a bottle cap away / From pushing me too far.") Drawing from each of their six albums, Old 97's brought the crowd at Santa Monica's Troubadour club to visible delirium at a March 2004 show; that concert appears here. Sounding very much like hard-charging heirs to vast legacies of the Kinks, Hank Williams, the Replacements, Johnny Cash, REM, and even White Album-era Beatles, singer-songwriter-guitarist Rhett Miller, drummer Philip Peeples, lead guitarist Ken Bethea, and bassist Murry Hammond paint loss with rootsy-poetic authenticity while blowing gloom apart with punky exhilaration. The many highlights include the agreeable pop plaint "Rollerskate Skinny" ("I believe in love / But it don't believe in me"), the anthemic anti-anthem "Friends Forever," and Hammond's moving, acoustic solo on "Valentine." --Tom Keogh

1 – Just Like California
2 – King Of The World
3 – Weightless
4 – Rollerskate Skinny

John Mayer Live From PBS's Soundstage Audio Rip

I know what a lot of you are thinking, WTF? John Mayer? Sure, he seems to be a hit with the teeny bopper and Y generation chicks and they drool over him. But this kid's got substance. Very talented and and all around fine musician and singer. And if Buddy Guy can give this dude a thumbs up so can I. Anyway, here is some live John Mayer that doesn't have the rediculous screaming that you hear way too much of from the "Any Given Thursday" live CD. The jams with Buddy Guy are exceptional!
I added bonus tracks to the file from "Acoustic Session VH1 Vspot" and a tune from Eric Claptons Guitar Roads Festival DVD.

From the PBS Soundstage Web Page:

Part 1 - Premiering on PBS July 7, 2005

John Mayer has become an emerging superstar without conforming to any single genre – sometimes bluesy, sometimes pop, sometimes rock, but always excellent. Writing incredible songs that appeal to a wide audience, he provides that rare common ground among listeners of all ages. With fan favorites like “No Such Thing,” “Why Georgia” and “Bigger than my Body,” Mayer rolls out nothing but the best for this Soundstage audience. Mayer has always had a special relationship with the blues, and he can count one of its greatest practitioners as a fan. In the first episode of this two-part Soundstage, the legendary Buddy Guy surprises viewers by joining Mayer midway through “Come Back To Bed,” and remains for and extended jam on “Damn Right I Got The Blues.” Other Mayer hits, including the blockbuster “Your Body Is a Wonderland,” also define this set.

Part 2 - Premiering on PBS July 14, 2005

John Mayer’s convincing vocals, guitar virtuosity and compelling songwriting has earned him the respect of his contemporaries as well as significant radio airplay and a solid fan following. On the second part of this Soundstage episode, John Mayer continues his set with favorites “My Stupid Mouth,” “Neon” and the Grammy Award-winning Song of the Year “Daughters.” Towards the end of this episode Buddy Guy returns to end this show on a high note (literally). This time the roles are reversed as Buddy takes the lead on the classic blues “Feels Like Rain,” while Mayer steps back on guitar and lets the teacher do his thing.

Beth Hart Live At The Paradiso DVD Audio Rip

This is an audio rip from my Beth Hart Live At The Paradiso DVD. This is one crazy chick but she rocks! Beth Hart has all the grit and soul of the late Janis Joplin and Robert Plant without ever sounding as though she is trying to imitate them. Her voice is her own and it is one very impressive instrument. Her repetoire runs the gamut from blues to gut bucket rock. She easily stands shoulder to shoulder with any male singer without ever losing her femininity. Add to that a tight, rocking band that is just having a ball and you've got one hell of a combo. If you don't think girls can rock then check out Beth's covers of Zep's "Whole Lotta Love" and Humble Pie's "I Don't Need No Doctor". Her own tunes are great and are never overshadowed by these perennial favourites.
Her slower, more soulful tunes never lose the intensity she is able to build during more raucous numbers. Quite the opposite, when she settles down at her piano alone her soul pours out with every syllable. This is a lady who can sing about having been to Hell and back with beautifully crafted melody and heartfelt vocals that make you believe her every word.
The above verbage unashamedly ripped off of someone elses review from Amazon.

Foster "Ken" Mackenzie III (Root Boy Slim) was born on July 9, 1945 in Asheville, NC. His father was a golf course architect and he grew up in Washington, DC Root Boy attended a number of private schools, including Sidwell Friends and the St. James School in Hagerstown. Considered a tortured genius by some, Root Boy was a commanding, compelling presence in the DC music scene in the late 1970s and 80s. His songs were wry commentaries on the absurdities of life, including his own.

Root Boy attended Yale University, where he and George W. Bush belonged to the same fraternity (DKE, "the Dekes"), although Bush was one year behind him. Root Boy was the frat's social director, and he would later tell people that the future president showed up at all the parties. Root Boy said that he went back to visit one year and Bush, now president of the fraternity, threw him off the premises for smoking a joint on the frat house's front steps.

At Yale, Root Boy made friends with fraternity brother Bob Greenlee, who was captain of the Yale football team. They formed a band called "The Young Prince La La, Percy Uptight and the Midnight Creepers." It is said that the band never played the same venue twice.

Over the next decade, Root Boy attended architecture school, studied city planning, and traveled. He was arrested in Jamaica, then again in Jacksonville, and in 1969 jumped over the White House fence, landing him in St. Elizabeth's for observation. He would later write songs about these events and, while living in Florida, enlisted his friend Bob Greenlee to record some of them. The band moved to DC in the spring of 1977, adding Ron Holloway on saxophone and the backup singers The Rootettes.

The band was called Root Boy Slim and the Sex Change Band, and the combination of excellent musicians, clever and unusual hook-ridden songs, along with Root Boy's charismatic, outlandish persona propelled it to huge local success in the late 1970s and 1980s. His subjects included substance abuse, mental instability and politics, with song titles such as "Too Sick To Reggae," "Dozin' and Droolin," I'm Not Too Old for You," and "Boogie Til You Puke." Although he made fun of his vices, Root Boy used drugs and alcohol to excess. His shows were sometimes erratic, but they were always funny and outrageous. Root Boy would wear flowing capes, leopard outfits and his trademark ROOT glasses, and he would order his backup singers, the Rootettes, to get down on the filthy stage floor with him as he sang "Do the Gator." His performances at venues such as The Psychedelly in Bethesda, the Cellar Door and Bayou in Georgetown, and the Varsity Grill in College Park were always packed, and staffers from the Carter White House were among his following. He was even invited to visit the White House by Carter's appointment secretary. Root Boy approved of the Carter administration, but when President Reagan was elected, he wrote "Cowboy in the Sun Too Long" and "Rich, White, Republican."

In 1977, a demo album, including "Boogie Til You Puke" and "You Broke My Mood Ring," produced by local entrepreneurs Joe Lee and Dick Bangham (who later became a Rootette) was unofficially rated "the most requested album of the year" on WHFS. This caught the attention of Steely Dan's Donald Fagen and producer Gary Katz, who took the act to Warner Brothers Records. Root Boy inked a quarter of a million dollar deal with the record company and released his debut album in 1978 with all of the songs included on the original demo. An appearance in "Mr. Mike's Mondo Video," produced by Saturday Night Live head writer Michael O'Donahue, might have put him over the top but the special was rejected for air by then NBC-president Fred Silverman. The album didn't meet expectations and the label bought out the remainder of the contract. The next year, Root's second album, Zoom, was released on A&M's IRS/Illegal Records. The band toured England and Scotland, opening for Ian Dury and the Blockheads and making headlines in the British musical press as well as in Rolling Stone in the US. Marshall Keys joined the band in 1978 when guitarist Stuart Smith decided against doing the Dury tour. Root Boy went on to record four more albums with Greenlee and Lancaster on smaller labels, two of them Greenlee's King Snake Records.

For the last fifteen years of his life, Root Boy continued to write songs and perform with a series of bands made up of many of DC's most talented players, including Tommy Lepson. His last production was a moving video of his song "Hey Mr. President", a call to help the homeless, released during the Presidential campaign in 1992. The Sex Change Band reunited in 1993 for an East coast tour. Worn down by his inner demons and declining health, Root Boy died in his sleep just four days after the band's kickoff show at The Junkyard in Orlando, one month before his 48th birthday.

WHFS Weasel 05-12-1982 Ninety Minute Cassette

I have in my collection hundreds of hours of WHFS from the late 70's to the late 90's. Some were taped on cassette and some were taped on my Akai Open Reel tape deck and some were aquired in a trade. This tape is from Wed, May 12 1982 of DJ Weasel playing some classic music from that time period. This one tape shows just how awesome this radio station was. Just look at this line up! Each file is a set of tunes with commercials omitted. In retrospect it would be interesting to have heard the commercials today, but back then, I just wanted the music. It's definetly a good road trip tape. Sound quality is very good but not the best. It was taped on a BASF Performance C90 tape. Dolby B on for recording, and left off when I ripped the tape to my hard drive. Back off on the treble and you should be fine.

01 Johnny Seaton, The Clash, Pandoras, Paul Weller, The Beatles

Til' Tuesday Live- Westwood One Vinyl LP Rip

Here is a post of an audio rip from the CD that I recorded of my Til' Tuesday Live- Westwood One Vinyl LP.
I purchased this LP years ago at the Record and Tape Exchange in College Park, MD. I bought over 500 vinyl LP's from this guy. Sad to say he is out of business. If only he had held out long enough to get into selling his stuff on line.
I looked for my LP today for more information, but can't find it. Anyway, this is a pretty good show from Aimee Mann and company.

Root Boy Slim and The Sex Change Band Debut and Zoom LP Vinyl Rip on One CD

Here's a treat for Rootboy Slim fans. This is a vinyl rip from my collection. The Debut "Root Boy Slim and the Sex Change Band with the Rootettes" (Warner Brothers, 1978) LP and and the follow up LP "Zoom" (IRS Records 1979). Rootboy was pretty whacked out, and was charecterized as punk by some. Really it is straight up fun rock n roll. Whimsical, funny, nothing too serious. His music is reminiscent of Crack the Sky, Frank Zappa, and The Good Rats. I say this because the tunes are funny, yet put down to some very good music. Ron Hollaway a famed Jazz Sax man plays on both albums. I saw Rootboy a few times. Always an outragous show. Everyone drunk and especially Rootboy. Anyone ever do the "Gator" on stage with Root?
The Debut album on CD is available on Amazon. The Zoom LP is on e-bay for $64.00!!!!!

From Amazon Reviews:
Root Boy Slim is hard to describe, maybe ''blues based mayhem'' is a start. He has been compared to Captain Beefheart and Dr. John. One thing for sure, he has a hardcore cult following. His most popular (and probably his best) album is Root Boy Slim & The Sex Change Band, which was originally issued on Warner Brothers Records in 1978. It features the underground hit 'Boogie 'Til You Puke'. This album is making its worldwide CD debut on Wounded Bird Records. 11 tracks. 2003.

A great review that says it all from a user on Amazon:
This is THE essential party album. It originally was released on vinyl by Warner Brothers in the '70s, but must have fallen down a black hole as far as a CD was concerned--then Root Boy OD's a few years ago in a sort of down-and-out way, and my guess is that the rights to the music were messed up somehow.

Anyway, the lyrics tell the story.
From "Mood Ring"- -"When I first saw you tonight/Could not believe my eyes/You got my Mood Ring smokin'/I wiped it on my thighs/Drank three tequilas/Just to calm me down/The damn thing 'sploded/And spread my mood around. . ."

From "My Wig Fell Off"- -"Tryin' to pass for eighteen/Is a tough thing to do/You can't make it in the disco/When you're forty-two/I've been looking for love/In every disco in town/My wig is gettin' shaky/My truss is slippin' down. . . [Chorus] My wig fell off/Hand my toupee to me/I'm quittin' the disco/I'm almost forty-three. . ."

From "The Heartbreak of Psoriasis"- -"You can see it on your TV/In your private home/You can see it on the scoreboard/At the Astrodome/Itching elbows/Back of the neck/Who knows where the heartbreak/Will strike next. . ."
-
Here'a Another Review:
Slim(Root) Loved playing Albany NY and Washington DC area . Root was a Yale graduate and one cool cat . His humour in his songs added zest to that boogie woogie rock n roll style this band excelled in . His 45's like Xmas at K-Mart(everyone shopping for the blue light special) and World War III, Dare to be fat and The Shah is gone(he's gone away) are very rare to find for an even the most advid vinyl collectors. Always nice to have the CD but agree with the earlier rater the vinyl has more horns and is better. Delicious nutricious "Root Loops" as he threw Fruit Loops at the audience... Root was the most versatile outrageous band EVER. I recommend this CD if you can't hunt down his vinyls . When it comes to keepin' it real....nobody does it like Root Boy! Just wish he was still doin' it. I can't ever get enough of it. If you like to rock out with a tight band, and have a good laugh at the same time, this one is a must. Can't wait for Zoom to come out on CD. My vinyls are wearing out!

Awesome in depth info from Wikepedia:
Root Boy Slim (born Foster MacKenzie III) (born July 9, 1945 — died June 8, 1993) Asheville, North Carolina; was an American singer-songwriter for the band Root Boy Slim and the Sex Change Band. He died in his sleep in his home in Orlando, Florida at the age of 48.
The band favored a mix of Memphis-style boogie rock/blues and produced six albums. Its most famous recording was "Boogie 'Til You Puke" from the debut album Root Boy Slim and the Sex Change Band with the Rootettes, (Warner Brothers, 1978), which also featured "I Used To Be a Radical," "I'm Not Too Old For You," and "(You Broke My) Mood Ring." Another famous recording was the band's holiday favorite: "Christmas at K-Mart". Most of the songs were written by MacKenzie, guitarist Ernie Lancaster, and bassist Bob Greenlee. The lyrics often satirized society and mixed in autobiographical elements from MacKenzie's storied life.
-
Background
MacKenzie grew up in a wealthy household in Washington, DC. His mother was a society matron whose father was a North Carolina congressman who had chaired the House Ways and Means Committee. His father was a landscape architect who designed golf courses.
MacKenzie was an intelligent yet incorrigible youth who was invited to leave several private DC-area prep schools such as Sidwell Friends, whose alums include Chelsea Clinton. He finally found his niche at Saint James School in Hagerstown, MD., a boarding school. There, he played varsity football.
He went on to Yale, where he majored in African American studies, graduating in 1967. He was a member of the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity. His fraternity brothers included future two-time President, George W. Bush. MacKenzie was a year older than Bush.
While at Yale, MacKenzie formed a band with classmate and fraternity brother Greenlee, who was quarterback of Yale's football team. The band was named Prince La La and the Midnight Creepers. Band members wore ermine capes, silver lame hot pants and boasted that they were never invited for return engagements.
The year after MacKenzie and Greenlee graduated, they returned to the DKE house during Yale's homecoming. Bush, who since their departure had become president of DKE, threw them out and banned them from the house.
Washington, DC
After graduating from Yale, Root Boy bummed around Washington, DC for a number of years in different jobs, including one stint as driver for a Good Humor truck. One day he took a lot of LSD and went to the White House and climbed the fence. (He later explained that he "was looking for the center of the universe.") He was apprehended by the Secret Service as he ran up the lawn toward the White House. He was the first intruder since the War of 1812 to get completely over the fence.
Following his arrest, he was sent to St. Elizabeth's Psychiatric Hospital. This was the first of many visits that he would make in the coming years. The large dose of LSD he had consumed caused a psychotic break that led to schizophrenia that he would be medicated for during the rest of his life.

The Sex Change Band
Following his release from St. Elizabeth's, he reconnected with Greenlee and some other musicians. They recorded songs that found an audience on underground stations in the Washington area, such as WGTB, the Georgetown University station, and WHFS, then based in Bethesda. Besides Greenlee, who played bass, the other musicians in the Sex Change Band included Ernie Lancaster on guitar, Ron Holloway on saxophone and Winston Kelly on keyboards. Other notable musicians who played with the band over the years include Tom Lepson and Deanna Bogart.
One day in 1977, Donald Fagen (of Steely Dan) was visiting DC and heard the band's version of "Laundromat Blues" on WGTB. He called the station for a copy of the song, and took it back to the west coast and gave it to music producer Gary Katz. Katz signed the band to Warner Brothers, which resulted the band's debut album.

Root Boy Slim and the Sex Change Band with the Rootettes
In 1978, the band released "Root Boy Slim and the Sex Change Band with the Rootettes."
During the same year, the band played a date at The Varsity Grill's Back Room in College Park, Maryland (home of the University of Maryland). A riot ensued and the College Park City Council later banned Root Boy Slim and The Sex Change Band from the city. (The ban was lifted a few years later and they played an engagement at the University of Maryland's Ritchie Coliseum). Most of the original band members went their separate ways, reuniting mostly for recording projects. For nightclub performances, Root Boy was backed by a series of other bands, including New Hope for the Criminally Insane, Capital Offense and the Barbecue Juiceheads.
Root Boy Slim and the Sex Change Band's fifth anniversary took place in 1982 at the Psyche Delly in Bethesda, MD, and featured home movies of Root Boy, who wore an orange and white checkered 7-Eleven clerk's shirt and a white 10-gallon cowboy hat throughout the concert. The band's 10th anniversary concert took place at The Roxy, a club in downtown Washington. A line formed hours prior to that show and the club's three levels were standing room only. By the time the fourth set began, there were at least 25 musicians on the stage who had recorded or played clubs with Root Boy during his career. That show was also the debut of the "Rich, White, Republican," a biting satiric attack on Republicans that prophesied the eventual election of George W. Bush to the White House.
-
Death
After his death in 1993, the Washington Area Music Association held a memorial concert at The Bayou on K Street in Georgetown. Root Boy fans traveled from as far away as California to pay homage to "The Lenny Bruce of the Blues."

Gary Moore and The Midnight Blues Band VHS Audio Rip

What we have here is one of the most aweome live videos I have ever had the pleasure to see and here. It is an audio rip from my "An Evening of the Blues with Gary Moore and the Midnight Blues Band" VHS HI-FI video tape. (Recorded to my Pioneer CD Recorder then ripped to my hard drive). With guests such as the late greats Albert Collins and Albert King, this completely kicks major ass! Not included in this audio rip are interviews with Albert King and Albert Collins. Both hail Gary Moore's guitar playing, each urge him to slow down a bit and make each note count. I guess Gary ignored their advise because he shreds here. And of course he has some slower moments too. The tracks with the two Alberts are simply the highlights of this tape. Just a great show. It's still available on Amazon, so if you want the interviews and want to see the video get it! The last two tracks are bonus tracks from the Gary Moore "Live Blues" VHS Video.

Set List:

1. Oh Pretty Woman
2. Walking By Myself
3. All Your Love
4. Still Got The Blues
5. Too Tired (Featuring Albert Collins)
6. Further On Up The Road (Featuring Albert Collins)
7. Texas Strut
8. Moving On
9. Midnight Blues
10. King Of The Blues
11. Stormy Monday (Featuring Albert King)
12. Caldonia (Featuring Albert Collins and Albert King)
13. Cold Day in Hell (Live Blues Video- Bonus Track)
14. Story Of The Blues (Live Blues Video- Bonus track)

Video Clip Here:

1990 The year is marked by a definite turn in Gary Moore's career with the release of his first blues album, Still Got the Blues. The album features covers of standard blues songs as well as Gary Moore originals; guest stars include Albert Collins and George Harrison (on one of his own compositions). The success of the new album was unexpected; it turned out to be the best selling Gary Moore album ever! The single Still Got the Blues even breaks through in the US. That same year George Harrison enrolls Gary Moore for a Traveling Wilburys song, She's my Baby. Was that not the first time you could hear Gary Moore on two different songs on US radios?... Gary Moore gets a chance to play on stage with the "two Alberts" (King and Collins) during his tour; the experience, captured on film (An Evening of the Blues with Gary Moore and the Midnight Blues Band), seems to have been very educative for Gary Moore.

A phenomenal performance of Gary Moore and two other blues greats, Albert King and Albert Collins. Moore's vocals are better than he is in the studio, and his guitar playing is tip top. It's also great to see legendary bluesmen Alert King and Albert Collins, both of whom had little time left in their lives. The video also comes with interviews, and gives some good insight on how King and Collins felt about each other, Gary Moore, and the blues alltogether. It's one of my all-time favorite performances by any artist, and it's a must have for any blues fan.

What This Is All About

I've been collecting live music from various sources since the mid to late 70's. Radio shows, TV broadcasts, radio show pre-FM CD's and vinyl LP's and some trades. Most of the shows posted here, I recorded and ripped myself. I always had top of the line stereo equipment and cassette and open reel recorders for those on air broadcasts.
I've downloaded plenty of bootlegged concerts from various blogs. As a rule I will only post stuff from my collection and not what is already available out there.
I also post out of print CDs and LPs from my collection.
I will repost from my readers anything someone sends me as long as it is either out of print or something that's not from someone else's blog. If you want to share a link for a cool item on your blog, or someone else's, please feel free to post it in the comments........
Enjoy and please leave a comment and pass this blog along.
Can you believe that so many out there are starving for the old WHFS? Amazing!
If you leave a comment, how about using a nickname instead of Anonymous. At least make up something please. Thanks!
