Another great set of late night WHFS from January 21 1983. Solid tunes from Mark and Milo. It's awesome Dave shared these tapes isn't it? Most of the ones I taped then shared were from the morning and afternoon. I had a job with days off during the week and would tape during the day. It's a real treat to get some overnight stuff! Thanks again Dave!

WAMU 88.5 FM 06-29-1982 The Overnight Express Show
Well we solved a mystery from the last WAMU Tape. Seeing how this one was taped on June 29th 1982 it only makes sense the other tape was taped a few days before. The tape is dated 06-27-82 and 06-30-1982 yet the DJ mention's it is June 29th while running throught the Concert Calender.
The DJ's here (Bruce Rosenstein and Lee)also mention that this is the last Overnight Express show. Great tunes and awesome Concert Calender to bring back memories of long lost venues and bands.
There is also an interview with Rupert Chappelle. I really don't know who he is, but here he is announcing a 25 band free concert in D.C. I swear he reminds me of a DeeJay on WGTB way back in the 70's. Apparently he is a ground breaker in alternative music in the DC area. Google his name for his 'MySpace' page and other stuff...
This tape will take you back to the good 'ol days of Underground Music in the D.C. area.
This is just one side of a 90 minute tape. Side 2 is a David Bowie LP.
Thanks DaveB for this one!

WHFS 102.3 Then WAMU 88.5 From DaveB
Perhaps Dave can help with the date circa when he sees his tape here. I'm guessing 1982. I used to listen to the Rock N Roll jukebox on WAMU during the evening in the late 70's. Sadly I never did any taping of WAMU. Thanks to Dave for preserving some memories for us D.C. area stoners!...lol...Anyways, this 90 minute tape starts out with WHFS DJ Milo for the first 20 minutes then it's on to WAMU and the last Friday Overnight Express Show. The end of the tape has some completely bizzaro strange verbal tirade that goes on for several minutes...very weird indeed...

1986 XXXII WHFS 99.1 Fall of 1986
Long time WHFS listener DaveB of Northern Virginia has been kind enough to send me 50, that's right, fifty 90 minute cassettes from WHFS 102.3 and 99.1. Holy Shit! I can hardly believe we get another 75 hours of WHFS to add to our collections. Please thank Dave big time in the comments section.
I will be labeling each folder with date, if available, and as a request from Dave, to include the Roman Numeral Sequence he listed on the tape.
So without further ado...here's one side of a 90 minute tape to start things out with.
It's a great twangy cowpunk kinda country rockin' set from an unknown to me DJ. Sounds like Radioactivity with a guest DJ, but what do I know...Got to be the 1st time I can recall hearing Lynyrd Skynyrd on WHFS!!!
Again...Please post a huge thanks to DaveB!

Joe Ely, Hi Res Cassette Rip
I was doing a little straighting out of some of my stuff when my eye caught this Joe Ely cassette. I thought, I'm sure I have this on CD or downloaded it from somewhere. So I looked in my Joe Ely folder, and nope it wasn't in there. Apparantly it never was released on CD. I could go buy the vinyl from Ebay...but what the hey...this is a fairly good factory cassette rip...so here it is for my fellow music sharing buds.
I was going to leave the Dolby B off while recording but decided it might be a little hissy if I did, so you might want to increase the treble a tad. Enjoy!
All Music Guide Review
Due to its title, its stylized cover, and articles portraying Joe Ely as having fallen in love with computers and synthesizers, Hi-Res, his fifth studio album, unfairly got a reputation as some sort of synth pop effort, a sort of "Joe Ely meets Kraftwerk" monstrosity. So, those who actually hear it may be surprised to find that it actually sounds like most of Joe Ely's other records, the musical arrangements dominated by slashing electric guitar work, the songs often bearing Ely's cockeyed sense of humor. There are synthesized keyboards and even synth-drums to be heard here and there, and the arrangements are more elaborate and somewhat more pop-oriented than before, but this is still the same Joe Ely who made Musta Notta Gotta Lotta. That album, however, had largely erased the country influences in Ely's music, and here they are only a memory. "Dame Tu Mano" has a distinct Tex-Mex feel, but that's just about it. Still, if Hi-Res is an essentially misunderstood album, that's not to say it is a great one. The real problem with the disc is not the sound of it, it's the material. For once, Ely is not relying heavily on Butch Hancock to augment the songwriting, and it shows. "What's Shakin' Tonight" is a dynamic opener; "Cool Rockin' Loretta" is a keeper, and so is "Letter to Laredo." But "She Gotta Get the Gettin'" and "Locked in a Boxcar with the Queen of Spain" sound like retreads, and the rest of the songs are just forgettable. Thus, this is an uneven collection, and unfortunately it came at a time, more than three years after Ely's last studio album, when he needed to reintroduce himself to his audience and expand on it. Instead, his audience was put off, and nobody else joined in. ~ William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide

What This Is All About
I've been collecting live music from various sources since the mid to late 70's. Radio shows, TV broadcasts, radio show pre-FM CD's and vinyl LP's and some trades. Most of the shows posted here, I recorded and ripped myself. I always had top of the line stereo equipment and cassette and open reel recorders for those on air broadcasts.
I've downloaded plenty of bootlegged concerts from various blogs. As a rule I will only post stuff from my collection and not what is already available out there.
I also post out of print CDs and LPs from my collection.
I will repost from my readers anything someone sends me as long as it is either out of print or something that's not from someone else's blog. If you want to share a link for a cool item on your blog, or someone else's, please feel free to post it in the comments........
Enjoy and please leave a comment and pass this blog along.
Can you believe that so many out there are starving for the old WHFS? Amazing!
If you leave a comment, how about using a nickname instead of Anonymous. At least make up something please. Thanks!
I have reconsidered my position...and will re-upload dead links, so long as you go to that particular post and make the request from the comments page...
