That's All Folks!
After 1 full year and 450 posts, I believe I have shared just about everything that I have that is worth sharing. I had a great time doing this and what a blast it was getting all the feedback from the WHFS Heads out there. I'll continue to moderate the comments and answer each and every one of them.
And don't forget...
“Information is not knowledge. Knowledge is not wisdom. Wisdom is not truth. Truth is not beauty. Beauty is not love. Love is not music. Music is THE BEST…”---Frank Zappa

What This Is All About
I've been collecting live music from various sources since the mid to late 70's. Radio shows, TV broadcasts, radio show pre-FM CD's and vinyl LP's and some trades. Most of the shows posted here, I recorded and ripped myself. I always had top of the line stereo equipment and cassette and open reel recorders for those on air broadcasts.
I've downloaded plenty of bootlegged concerts from various blogs. As a rule I will only post stuff from my collection and not what is already available out there.
I also post out of print CDs and LPs from my collection.
I will repost from my readers anything someone sends me as long as it is either out of print or something that's not from someone else's blog. If you want to share a link for a cool item on your blog, or someone else's, please feel free to post it in the comments........
Enjoy and please leave a comment and pass this blog along.
Can you believe that so many out there are starving for the old WHFS? Amazing!
If you leave a comment, how about using a nickname instead of Anonymous. At least make up something please. Thanks!
I have reconsidered my position...and will re-upload dead links, so long as you go to that particular post and make the request from the comments page...

Thanks, truly enjoyed your blog!
Thank you for the trip down the WHFS memory lane...
Thanks for the site, it was nice for you to have shared your collection with us. I work with Milo from HFS and he was tickled to hear the old broadcast
Thanks again
Thank you for all your posts, sir. Thanks to you I discovered Crack The Sky - I am forever in your debt.
Best wishes
Pete from the Uk
Good to here from you Pete! I love CTS! Enjoy!
gunboy3,
Tell Milo thanks for being on the Radio!
And thanks for the feedback!
Jim,
It was so much fun sharing all those tapes, and then all the tapes that were sent to me that I got a chance to post and share...2 much fun!
Thanks for your feedback!
bergenite,
It was my pleaseure!
Thanks for stopping by...
Dude! I just found your blog about 3 weeks ago & now you're bugging? Hope its nothing I said. :-) Seriously - enjoyed finding some stuff from your recent posts & I hope you'll keep the blog alive for me to traipse back thru your old posts to find other stuff of interest. Thx in particular for Lone Justice, Jason & The Scorchers, Jerry Jeff, and Prine.
Dude!.....no worries...I'm leaving the blog up for a while...maybe even sneak a post or two now and then...
L.J. and M.M., some of my alltime favorites..enjoy!
Thanks for all the good stuff. I check and re-check to see if there is anything I missed. Thanks again for all your hard (but enjoyable) work.
I just found this blog,,great stuff, thanks for sharing!
the best blog in the world closes...Oh, gosh was it fun. Such incredible memories now living on my IPOD. You were so kind to post those great shows.
bill
It was my pleasure bud...thanks
you are welcome meme
bill...glad to have been able to load up that iPod a bit...enjoy!
You've turned me on to some amazing music I NEVER would have heard, otherwise.
Don'cha just love how bland ClearChannel radio stations are? You can travel from Florida to Washington, Rhode Island to Texas and hear the same old forgettable crap repeated over and over and over. And it's not just Rock & Roll that's dead. Country is the same way... it's just turning into "lite rock" + Rap. Ugh! Disgusting. I have to go listen to Waylon or Merle Haggard to remember what Country/Western is all about.
This place is a refreshing change. A tutorial of "Good Taste In Music 101". The music people SHOULD be hearing and would, if given a choice.
I've found many new favorite bands here -- and I've been buying used CDs left & right off eBay. My credit card's taking a beating, but my ears thank you. And I thank you! - Jack
Couldn't have said it better myself Jack! You already know what I think of the state of radio these days...Thanks for the awesome feedback!!!
You inspired me to share what I have - Thanks. I'll say, isn't it amazing that you recorded and collected what you did and probably had no idea you'd be able share it like you have the past year to such a vast audience?
Truly the past is now present.
Good luck with your next endeavors and stay in touch.
Naples
http://naplesgc.blogspot.com
You are right naples...never woulda given it a thought...it's awesome knowing so many out there actually got a chance to here some of my favorite tapes, LP's and CD's...and in return I've gotten even more than I shared...
Thank you very much for the wealth of music you have shared.
I stumbled upon your blog I think late last year when I was looking for some live Rockpile recordings. Thanks to you, I found them, and discovered many more interesting artists and their music.
Your passion for music is awesome -- Keep the fire burning!
All the best,
Billie from the Philippines
Thanks for the kind words billie...the fire burns!
Thanks so much for the great blog!
You're welcome chris!
I've spent the last year listening to HFS at work. Especially appreciate the Bethesda tapes. I lived in Fairfax and the reception at that time was pretty awful. The highlights were the last day in Bethesda, John Lennon obit and Dick Lilliard--but they were all great. And thanks for WRNR, which I had never heard of before.
Living in San Diego, I'm 25 years and a continent removed. So it was nice to get back.
Thanks for all the hard work. I'll keep checking in from time to time. You hinted at one point that you had more WRNR stashed away. Love to hear it.
Thanks again
jebaxt...even tho I have a boatload of WRNR Tapes to rip and share, I really wasn't getting much of a response to the ones I posted and not many were downloaded, so I lost the motivation to get those posted. Someday I may get them out there to share.
It's really cool to hear that someone from the left coast actually found this blog and really appreciates the old 'HFS tapes! Thanks for letting me know!
You are the man buddy! Fantastic stuff that you have shared here and by the looks of things everyone really appreciates it!
I just wanted to thank you for taking the time to rip and share all that you did. I only wish I had the time to do that with the many concerts I recorded on my VCR over a 20 year span.
You were kind enough to do that, and I'm sure there are many folks out there who appreciate it.
I do hope you'll leave the blog up for people (like myself) to spend time going back through all that good music.
Thanks again, and enjoy your "retirement".
John
You are da man Hop! You have shared some fantastic stuff here and by the looks of things a whole lot of people appreciate your passion and efforts! I know you will be back! Thanks again my friend!
Wizz
Looking for a spike in users at my WHFS forum - http://whfscoolmusic.simpleforums.net/
Can you help? Maybe post something?
how can i be the man when you da man!
john...retire? Me?
Good to hear from ya and thanks for the kind words!
The blog will be up for a while..
Thanks for the kind words my friend Wizz...Happy 50th!
Thanks for the visit to the past. I will be sending you some links to a full set of recordings from WHFS of the top 99 from 1991 and 1992. They are fairly complete and include all commericals, DJ chat etc from those years. My cassette deck is currently on the fritz and I am getting it repaired expressly to rip these tapes. There is some good stuff on those as I recall....
TWDM
Hey Jim...Great site...having grown up in the D.C. suburbs and as a collector of music myself, your collection is indeed impressive.I too miss the old WHFS.It's all we ever listened to!!
TWDM,
Looking forward to that!
Awesum!
John Reilly...yep...nuthin worth listening to these days on the radio fer sure.
Thanks for the kind words...enjoy!
Hey, so nice to run into your blog and to be able to relive the real radio programming and listening community, from the best time of my life. I was with pals in my car honking the horn outside of the studio the night the music died. So many great memories of the station and thanks so much for your dedicated archival service. I should have sent you my cassette recording of Root Boy Slim and the Sex Change Band interviewed by Josh! A fine station with a similar ethic you might want to try can be found at WFMU.org ...original programming with real DJs! All best. Warren
Warren,
Thanks so much for the story of honkin' your horn outside the studios...I was in my living room freakin' the f-ck out! Glad you found the us here...thanks for the links...Cheers!
Thanks for one of the good blogs.
you're welcome!
I admit I was uninterested in some age-old radio broadcast 30 years and one continent away. Until I downloaded one of them that is. I would definitely have listened to those shows back then if I had had the opportunity. Not everything is about alubums and hits. It's about the pleasure of listening. And thanks for the Tift Merritt-rip. That lead to the purchase of all her albums and the Austin Tx DVD. It was fun .../R
R, thanks for your comments...It warms my heart to know that this blog helped, and not hurt Tift Merrits career and sales just a bit. Just goes to show that sharing can get the word out. Thanks for taking the time to download some of the old radio shows. As you can see, many out there think the world of them.
Enjoy!
This was one hell of a blog you'll be missed , thx Steve
Thanks steve!
Thax a lot for share with anybody of us!
Bye!
Camarillo--Thanks for doing all of this. This is a public service beyond all others! I'll be sure to turn on other HFS'ers to your blog. Amazing stuff! Any Swimming Pool Q's by chance?
The old HFS was like no other. I was saddened by the recent passing of Tom T. Long live Jake Einstein!
Well said JW...probably got some Swimming Pool Q's somwhere on all these 'HFS tapes...I pretty sure I remember hearing them somewhere in there
Camarillo, thank you for everything! I will miss checking here for stuff I missed years ago.
I just took a trip to Colorado last week and all of the Don Dixon stuff went with me! Chi-Town Budget Show is killer stuff! I never would have known about him if it wasn't for your dedication and love of music.
And other stuff like the Jayhawks and Lone Justice! The list goes on and on!
I guess I'll have to come back and find some other stuff that I missed out on while this is still here.
Question - Do you know what the most popular download was? Maybe I'll start there?
Anyway thanks again! Be safe!
walknthabass,
don't know what was downloaded the most but IMHO they are all worth a downoad...
Thanks for stopping by and thanks for all the comments...
Nooooooooooo!!!
Oh darn... I sure hope everything is okee with you and yours! I really do!
Thank you SO MUCH for all the great posts (especially the REALLY RARE Crenshaw!!!)
Anyone that quotes Zappa is A-OK in my book (It's a teeny tiny book... mostly poetry and Socio Anth/Mythology... Joe Campbell, Rilke, even Carl Sagan).
Good luck to you and your endeavors, sir!!!
~leesa
leesa,
anyone that likes Carl Sagan can't be all that bad. Everythings okee...just ran out of stuff to share...hope you find more goodies here...
Hey Camarillo,
Thanks for sending so much great music out "to the people, y'all"... I got some great stuff from your site (the Lucinda Williams material is just outrageously good) and really appreciate what you served up.
Thanks again for everything.
Carson,
Glad ya gotta chance to download her stuff...one of my all time faves....enjoy and thanks for the feedback!
Sorry to hear that you are hanging it up. I have enjoyed your blog very much. Thanks for all of your hard work. It is truly appreciated.
multielvi...man don't make me feel bad dude...just plain ran out of stuff and motivation...
The only thing left to say, and the most important one i believe, is a big thank you for all those great efforts (shares) of yours. This (sadly) was one great-great blog. We loved it and will always be one of my favourite ones.
See you. And surely music is the best as the one and only Frank Zappa said.
Hey man, just finally came indoors for the first time in months and find that you've called it quits. Hate to see ya stop man but it's cool that you know when to quit....if more people knew when to do that there'd be a lot less crap out there to wade thru.
If anybody asks you where to go from here send 'em over to my blog....I've still got enough stuff I thinks worth sharing to go for awhile longer
Take care and stop by from time to time.
TC
gkapageridis,
You are too kind! Thanks for letting me how you feel...
Tom Eckels,
Don't worry...I stop by often...your blog rocks dude!
Thanks for the kind words, and see you on the other side!
Hi again camarillo, hopefully everything is all right. When someone is giving so much freely then all those who take must be grateful and that’s simply what I’m to you. I wonder if you can send me Tom Eckels’s blog address. It seem very promising indeed.
Thanks in advance.

Regards from Lima, Peru, CB. Your site has been a revelation for me. Thanks specially for the Jayhawks and Lone Justice material. Everytime I travel to the US I visit Virgin and Borders to purchase original CD's of my new favorite groups you help me discover. That material is extremely rare in my country. Have a great, long and wonderful life, pal.
backdoorman..awesome feedback dude!
Thanks and glad to be able to provide some good stuff for you!
Enjoy

Madjono...thanks so much for the support! Glad you could download and listen to some of my old time favorites...enjoy!
great job and great music, thanks man
CB.. thanks for posting all this great material! I'm a guy pushing 36 years old, but I grew up with 102.3 WHFS, even have an old brown and gold bumper sticker in a box somewhere. My Mom had good tastes. :)
My uncle is a huge audiophile and I know he's going to flip when he sees your blog here. I sent an email already.. I was too excited to actually READ your blog, I just sent an email saying "You gotta check this out! I have no idea who this guy is, but this is an amazing blog!" I promise I'll actually read some soon and find out more about you, I just couldn't help myself.
At any rate, I'm looking forward to listening to ALL of this. There's so much I know I missed. I might be interested in those early WRNR recordings you have as well, even if you didn't get a lot of response on them yet.
The only radio history recording I have is an MP3 of when 99.1 WHFS switched over to El Zol! Want a copy of that for humor's sake?
Anyway, thanks for all the great material. Me and my family (I'm sure) are greatful and will get many hours of entertainment and nostalgia out of it, I'm sure.
Thanks again!
-Gryffyn
In case you want it, here's a link to the WHFS/ElZol switchover, for posterity and amusement:
http://www.h18.org/temp/forumlinks/whfs-elzol.mp3
Feel free to post a copy wherever you want (anyone reading this message).
Gryffyn,
Sure post a link for theat last bit of "HFS...even tho as far as I was concerned they were long past gone by then...
Thanks for stopping by and leaving some quality feedback! It is very much appreciated...Knowing your uncle and others have a chance to hear the old stuff again is why I got this thing going.
Since closing my blog I've had some requests for more old WRNR tapes...I probably have over 100 90 minute tapes...So I may start a WRNR Blog this winter if I feel the motivation tug...
Sort of completes the whole WHFS thing!
Thanks again Gryffyn!
And tell Bob it was Blanket of Secrecy singing Say You Will . Not as he spoke Say You Will singing Blanket of Secrecy. See, Jim, those great HFS shows are still coming up on the IPOD. What a great service you provided.
bill
Thanks again Bill!
New to the blog, but my only comment is: Great, Great, Great!
Thanks for all the hard work.
Bill D
You are welcome Bill...Always appreciate the feedback!
Thanks for your dedication to the lost art of freeform radio. I miss it terribly.
Phil
WRNR 1994-1998
Phil,
We all do!
Nothing is as it was!
Thanks for contributing your part!
I'm contemplating starting a WRNR blog...I have at least 100 90 minute tapes to digititize and share...
Thank you so much. Best to you.Health and happiness.
That's probably more tapes than I kept from the 'RNR days. I'll be interested to see/hear the new blog!
Well, as usual I'm late to the party. I was googling around for old Little Feat concert videos or tapes and found your site. What a find! I was an AVID HFS listener in the early 80s, living in a group house in Hyattsville, MD (center of the universe!) and attending the U of MD.
All of this stuff plus Crack the Sky, Root Boy Slim, etc were an integral part of my teenage and young adult years in the DC area.
I cannot thank you enough. I will be loading all of this onto my ipod so that I can enjoy radio as it used to be in my car cruising around the beltway.
How can we bring this back????

Phil,
I just might get it going soon...stay tuned!
twangrrl,
I don't think it can ever come back, but there's enough here to keep most of us old timers happy!
Enjoy the trip back in time! And thanks for leaving us some quality comments! Always appreciated!!!
Wow! A College Park friend of mine who works at a paper recommended this blog. I still have a boatload of tapes from 85-90 of midnight WHFS tunes!
Now I end up buying what I listened to on CD. I'm looking for hard-to-find late-night HFS songs. The DJ's never said anything when I taped, which is good and bad; I don't know who some artists were.
Amir,
Thanks for writing...load up and enjoy!
a search today allowed me to stumble across this great blog !!

Thanks for the comments and the link to your blog.
looking good!
Thanks again...
Jeez man, sorry to see you hang it up. You'll be missed.
Your Buddies at FBS.
i just found your blog and am blown away by what you've shared. my wife has complained about how much music i have so i showed her your pictures of how much you have and she couldn't believe it. i'm still going through and am putting a lot of stuff on my mp3 player so that i can listen at work, especially the whfs stuff, i lived in d.c. from 92-95 and that is the onl;y station i could listen to. thanks, again, don
Thanks Don! Glad you got a chance to grab some tunes and to show the wife it could be worse...
Aw man! I hadn't checked back here since I went through a downloading frenzy last summer, and now you're done? Darn.
At any rate, I'm really grateful to you for sharing all those shows. If you decide to share some of the RNR shows from the early days, I wouldn't be sad either. ;-)
Many, many thanks for bringing back tons of great memories!
-Janet
Hi Janet...Check back soon...I am hoping to post those WRNR tapes soon...Haven't decided if I am posting them here or starting a new WRNR Blog...Thanks again for the kind words and the great tunes you played on WRNR....
desde espaƱa,gracias.
Desde EspaƱa,gracias.
From the USA...You're Welcome!
Wow. I missed it all. Dang. What a GREAT place. Thanks for being here, the presence and all. I see photos of Dweezil Zappa here. I hope you had an opportunity to see Zappa Plays Zappa. We saw ZPZ at the Roseland Theater in Portland, OR. (not a great venue, too much concrete, poor acoustics) and the following evening (or was it the next nigt?) at The Paramount in Seattle, December 2006. Haven't had that much Zappa fun since Frank's Madison Square Garden shows (Halloween and others...) I've been a Frank fan since ~1969. I'm still a Frank fan. Anyway, thanks much for sharing. Yours, Robert
Robert, i saw ZPZ twice..oncein Dc and once in Baltimore...Both shows were killer awesome! In Baltimore, they declared it Frank Zappa day (it was his birthday) and gave the proclamation on a plaque to Dweezil. He was visibly moved...
