WHFS From Bill Ripped on 09-27-2013

OK...Here is another tape from contributer Bill. All I can tell you is it's from WHFS, probably early to mid 80's.
As with a lot of the other tapes Bill sent me, this TDKD90 tape doesn't even have a single word written on it. And Bill liked to tape the tunes...forget all the DJ chatter, commercials and what not. At the end of the tape is actually a sentence spoken by an unknown (to me) DJ letting us know we just heard a tune from World Party.
Maybe Bill will have a listen and recall when he taped it. It's full of good tunes, not to chopped up, so a pretty sweet listen. Thanks Bill!

Thomas Dolby, Don Dixon, Robert Cray, World Party and whole bunch of stuff that sounds familiar, but I can't identify.

WHFS 99.1 Meg Then Damian 05-07-1986

Here is yet another fine WHFS Tape recorded at work on my Sony Boombox.
As before, sound quality is a bit less then steller compared to those tapes I made with my Pioneer CT-F1000 and Akai open reel deck. It isn't total crap though.
Recorded, I believe, in the morning, starting with a few tunes from Meg, then the majority is Damien spinning some great tunes. The last five minutes or so sounds like I filled it with some Ronnie Hawkins. It's a pretty sweet tape!

This one almost didn't get shared. I originally ripped it a couple weeks ago, and when I listened to the rip it sounded like shit. So I deleted the file and tossed the tape in the trash pile. Then, later I was ripping another tape and discovered that one of the channels was dropping out due to some dirty RCA cable connections. Probably TMI, just glad I could get it out there for y'all to check out....Enjoy!

Robert Showacre, AKA Bob Here Passes On September 5, 2013

I didn't know that Bob Here had passed a couple of weeks ago. An anonymous reader sent me a message letting me know. All of us 'HFS fans I'm sure, are saddened by the news. It goes without saying, he was one of the best DJ's the station had to offer and also later on WRNR...Our thoughts are with his friends and family.

WHFS 99.1 Meg, Weasel 05-22-1986

OK, this is not the best sounding tape I've posted. But it isn't total crap either. I taped it at work on my Sony portable boom box. What it lacks in fidelity, it more then makes up for with music quality!
This was a short lived experiment I had trying to tape great WHFS at work. Well it was interfering with my job so I stopped...just think, today, I would just fill an SD card, or HDD up and edit it later. Imagine how many hours we would have...oh well..at least I was blessed to be able hear WHFS all day, every day!

This one is loaded with Great, Great tunes to party down to. Kinda hard to believe it's middle of the work week music, but it is. Tenacious Tuesday, May 22 1986...

THE DEL LORDS, LONE JUSTICE, LONG RIDERS, ARLAN ROTH, DAVE EDMUNDS, THE COMET TEENS, THE SPECIALS, ROOT BOY SLIM, BRIAN SETZER, LEROI BROTHERS, NRBQ, JOHNNY SEATON, THE BEATLES, QUICKSILVER, U2, THE BEATLES, TOMMY KEENE, HOODOO GURUS, LETS ACTIVE, FLAMIN' GROOVIES, SLICKEE BOYS, RICHARD LLOYD

WHFS 99.1 FM GINA CRASH AND JOHNNY RIGGS 10-16-1993

I Came across another WHFS tape for all you HFS Heads...
DJ Gina Crash plays some familiar HFS 90's tunes and Johnny Riggs has some interesting "Under The Covers" for those that remember his regular bit.
For me the tunes are mostly well worn staples, nothing terribly exciting here. HFS Long past it's prime here IMO.
"Evolve", "Rock for the 90's",  all catch B.S. phrases....

Good Rats Live @ The Bottom Line, NYC March 31, 1978 - Late Show

YouTube Rip

Published on Aug 16, 2013

Long Island's own legendary Goods Rats live at the Bottom Line In NYC. This is the late show from 3/31/78.
A stellar set list, this was part of a series of shows that was recorded for the King Biscuit Flower Hour. In 1982, a three-alarm fire damaged the Manhattan office tower that housed D.I.R. Broadcasting. Reportedly, many of the King Biscuit Flower Hour recordings were lost in the fire.
Although closely associated with classic rock in its later years, the King Biscuit Flower Hour dedicated much air time to new and emerging artists, including new wave and modern rock artists in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Set List:
Takin' It To Detroit
Does It Make You Feel Good
Don't Hate The Ones Who Bring You Rock And Roll
Ratcity In Blue

Baltimore Area Band 'Vigil' Cassette Share From Bill

Finally getting around to posting some of Bill's tapes, here's a band I recall from the WHFS days, but never really knew anything about them. The tune "Whistle In The Yard" was very familiar to me and I always dug it.
So, not really knowing who Vigil was, I popped in the tape and was blown away by the guitar driven powerpop type tunes I love so much...below is a word for word copy and paste from Bill Veneer's Music Blog.

12/09/2007

Homegrown Gothic: Vigil

One Baltimore-area band to almost hit it big in the 80s was Vigil; I think they were actually based in Glen Burnie.  The quartet of Jo Connor, Andy Reynolds, "X Factor" and Gregg Maizel had gained a local following under the moniker "Here Today," releasing a 12-inch single of "Whistle in the Yard," an enigmatic, gothic-tinged song that never quite resolves.  I saw Here Today at the Wax Museum in Southeast D.C.; that was a cool venue, with what is now called "stadium seating" but back then was just called "seating."  In its brief existence I got to see several great shows there: Eurythmics, Thompson Twins, Root Boy Slim, New Models, and Men Without Hats (eh...) to name a few.  Actually, I think that's all I saw there.  Here Today was the opening act the night I saw them, and I don't remember who the headliner was, but it was one of the bands I just listed.  As for Here Today, their Wikipedia entry says they
signed to CBS records, changed their name to Vigil and were promptly dropped. Vigil was quickly signed by Chrysalis Records and recorded their debut lp in glorious digital. It came out and sold enough copies to allow them to record another lp but only one track was officially released "Therapist" on the Nightmare on Elm Street 4 soundtrack. They recorded their eponymous debut album on Chrysalis Records in 1987. As of 2007 it is out of print.
Before the debut album came out there was a 12-inch single of "I Am Waiting."  That song is pretty good, but it was the first song on the B-side, "I Love You Equinox," that got played on WHFS and created a buzz.  When Jo Connor sings, "You can set your watch by her cycles 'cause she bleeds like clockwork," don't get grossed out, because it turns out he is singing about the moon, so it's OK, see?

Follow the link below to read more and follow the links for some YouTube videos and 12" single sample...
Thanks to both Bills!

What This Is All About

I've been collecting live music from various sources since the mid to late 70's. Radio shows, TV broadcasts, radio show pre-FM CD's and vinyl LP's and some trades. Most of the shows posted here, I recorded and ripped myself. I always had top of the line stereo equipment and cassette and open reel recorders for those on air broadcasts.

I've downloaded plenty of bootlegged concerts from various blogs. As a rule I will only post stuff from my collection and not what is already available out there.

I also post out of print CDs and LPs from my collection.
I will repost from my readers anything someone sends me as long as it is either out of print or something that's not from someone else's blog. If you want to share a link for a cool item on your blog, or someone else's, please feel free to post it in the comments........

Enjoy and please leave a comment and pass this blog along.

Can you believe that so many out there are starving for the old WHFS? Amazing!

If you leave a comment, how about using a nickname instead of Anonymous. At least make up something please. Thanks!

I have reconsidered my position...and will re-upload dead links, so long as you go to that particular post and make the request from the comments page...
