By Request: Rodney Crowell w/Albert Lee Live From TNN 1992
As requested in the comments section of the previous post, I have Rodney Crowell live from TNN on August 30 1992. Albert Lee dishes out plenty of hot licks here! As I have mentioned before, TNN, The Nashville Network, was a cable channel that had some pretty cool shows including the American Music Shop and Jerry Jeff Walker had a show on Saturday nights showcasing cool "Americana" music. This file contains some bonus tracks not associated with the show...Originally from cassette, this was ripped to my hard drive a while back.

WHFS 102.3 The Last 3 Hours In Bethesda, MD July 14th, 1983
This is sort of anti-climatic as I am now in possession of over 100 cassettes sent in by Bill and Robbie, [and will be posting a couple of them a week], but here goes my last Open Reel tape of WHFS from the Bethesda, MD days. Hard to believe but this is the first time I heard it since it was recorded some 25 years ago. And it is just as I remembered. The whole gang get's together for the last minutes, and one last tune, then the station going dead with the sound of white noise and a distance station buried in there. I did not post the play lists. You'll just have to download it and listen to it for yourself.

WHFS 102.3 Milo From The Winter of 1983 Shared By Robbie
Here is the 1st posting of, in this case, two tapes, from the box of 30+ 90 minute Maxell UDXLII cassettes sent to me by Robbie. They include most every DJ up until the last day of 102.3 FM in Bethesda, the 14th of July 1983. These aren't dated so we'll have to guess. At least we know they are all from 1983.
Who would have ever guessed that posting these WHFS tapes would have led to me and everyone else getting tapes shared by others. Heck I still have a bunch from Bob that I need to upload and share.
Thanks Robbie!

The Good Rats- 'From Rats To Riches' 1978 LP Vinyl RIP
Took me a while but I finally broke down and bought this LP on E-bay last week. It isn't even available from the Good Rats website, so I'm going to share it here for all my fellow Good Rats fans out there. Would have been something to see these guys and Crack the Sky together on one bill...
By the time of their fourth and best album - From Rats To Riches - (which was later issued on Radar in the UK), the line-up was the gruff-voiced Peppi Marchello, Mickey Marchello (guitar), John 'the Cat' Gatto (guitar), Lenny Kotke (bass) and Joe Franco (drums). This album was recorded on Long Island in late 1977 with Flo And Eddie (Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan) producing. Although their place in the market was never clear they were essentially a good old-fashioned, basic US rock 'n' roll band."
A1 Taking It to Detroit 3:36
A2 Just Found Me a Lady 2:50
A3 Mr. Mechanic 3:39
A4 Dear Sir 3:12
A5 Let Me 4:45
B1 Victory in Space 3:06
B2 Coo Coo Coo Blues 4:37
B3 Don't Hate the Ones Who Bring You Rock & Roll 6:38
B4 Could Be Tonight 2:54
B5 Local Zero 5:08
For fans of The Greatest Band That Was Never Known, Tasty & From Rats to Riches were arguably their best. By 1978 the five man combo of Peppi Marchello-Vocals & Harmonica, Mickey Marchello-Guitar & Vocals, John (The Cat) Gatto-Lead Guitar, Lenny Kotke-Bass & Vocals and Joe Franco-Drums had coalesced into a solid unit mixing balls-out Rock & Roll with barbershop harmonies and turning that into great music that (dammit) should have translated into national fame. At their height in the late '70s and early 80s The Good Rats had performed at Madison Square Garden, the Philadelphia Spectrum, the Nassau Coliseum, the Hammersmith Odeon in England, the Capitol Theater in Passaic, NJ (a late great venue) and New York's Central Park. The Good Rats had also played most of the major showcase rooms in the country including the Bottom Line (RIP), Paradise in Boston, Whisky in L.A., well... you get the point! They headlined and opened up for such groups as Twisted Sister, Rush, Aerosmith, Meatloaf, Ozzy, Grateful Dead, Kiss, Journey, Heart, Springsteen, Styx and many others.
With Tasty (1978) and From Rats To Riches (1978) the band was at the top of their form. Ranging from power ballads (Songwriter, Let Me) to witty ditties (Fred Upstairs and Ginger Snappers, Coo Coo Coo Blues) to Heavy Rock Injun Joe, Takin' it to Detroit) The Good Rats with their carefully blended harmonies, great (IMHO) writing and stellar musicianship had everything they needed to put themselves among the greats of their day. Dammit, they should have made it, but despite being Picked up by a minor Capitol label and picking up Flo & Eddie for producers, they never made it to the charts, much less got airplay. Still, their albums hold up to this day, and give me a charge every time I put them on. The entire Catalog has been re-released on CD, and if you can find them, buy them...especially these two!

Fleetwood Mac KBFH #98-23 Pre FM CD
Here is yet another Fleetwood Mac Live. This time it is from my King Biscuit Flower Hour disc #98-23 live from the Capitol Theatre, in Passaic, NJ. Recorded 06-07-1975. Bonus tracks at the end include some shows from a Westwood One Disc called BBC Classics (96-35), and "You and I Parts 1 and 2" I recorded off of Rock Over London in the late 80's. And an extended version of "Family Man"
Mick Fleetwood - drums
John McVie - bass
Christine McVie - keyboards, vocals
Stevie Nicks - vocals, tambourine
Lindsay Buckingham - guitar, vocals
This is one of the very first live shows of the classic Fleetwood Mac lineup that included Mick Fleetwood, John and Christine McVie, Lindsay Buckingham and Stevie Nicks. Fleetwood Mac, formed after McVie and Fleetwood (along with Eric Clapton) left John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers in 1966, had made its mark in both Europe and the U.S. as a British blues rock band; it wasn't until its mid 1970s Bare Trees era version, with singer /songwriters Bob Welch and Danny Kirwin at the helm, that the band began to move in a more purely pop direction.

Captain Sensible, A Day In The Life Of
Here's a vinyl rip of my Captain Sensible LP, "A Day In The Life Of". It's a best of compilation. Looking at some of the reviews on Amazon, the CD sucks and the vinyl is a better recording. Who really knows. Get it here on vinyl.

Neo Geo: Bold Talk for a One Eyed Fat Man
I was shopping in a used record store in
Silver Spring, MD one day. Playing on the
house stereo system was this awesome tune.
It was the title track "Bold Talk"...
Sorta Thomas Dolby, kinda Prefab Sprout, a
little bit of Jon Astley, and some It's
Immaterial thrown in for good measure...you
get the picture...I asked who it was. The
man says Neo Geo... I says...gimme that CD,
I'm buyin' it today! To this day I know next
to nothing about this band, never heard 'em
on the radio, but I dig this CD.
Neo Geo were a Sacramento based band fronted
by the very talented performer and
songwriter, Ann Perich. Their sound could
probably be called alternative, although
they defied easy classification. Sadly, they
are no longer appear to be active.

2) Queen, Swan and Arrow (5:29)
3) I Will Call for You (5:20)
4) Get up Joe (4:44)
5) Water of Tears (4:06)

7) Do You Know Me Better (Than I Know Myself) (5:32)
8) Breathe (6:06)
9) Johnny (5:21)

Legendary Blues and Jazz Guitarist Jeff Healey Dead at 41
Canadian rocker Jeff Healey has lost his battle with cancer. He was 41.
The blind star, who mastered playing the guitar despite his disability, died at Toronto's St. Joseph's Hospital on Sunday, just one day before his new album Mess of Blues, his first in eight years, was to be released in North America.
An official statement posted on his Web site reads: "Following a lengthy struggle with cancer, Healey passes away on the eve of the release of a new blues rock album."
Healey had been suffering from retino blastoma, a rare form of cancer, since birth and the disease claimed his eyesight when he was just one-year-old.
But Healey didn't allow his loss of sight to hinder his musical ambitions, going on to form the Jeff Healey Band with bassist Joe Rockman and drummer Tom Stephen. Their work spawned the 1988 Grammy-nominated album Angel Eyes.
Paying tribute to the late star, Healey's publicist Richard Flohil says, "Visually, Jeff was an intriguing player to watch, because he played guitar, by any conventional standard, all wrong, with it flat across his lap. But he was a remarkable, virtuoso player."
He is survived by his wife Christie and their two children: Rachel, 13, and Derek, three.
Jeff performed with such acclaimed guitar players as B. B. King, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Albert Collins and George Harrison. He was one of the world's best blues/rock guitar players.
I saw him with Randy, Sully and Debbie at Hammerjacks in Baltimore 1991, unbelievably, a free concert. The place was friggin' packed to the rafters! One of the best shows ever! We had been into Jeff since the "See the Light" album came out, so it was an awesome treat and highly anticipated show for us, plus it was free at that!
So today I am sharing my Westwood One PreFM CD Show #96-31 for broadcast the week of July 29, 1996. Commercials cut out. It's a fairly short show, and the version of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" is Smokin'!!!
No doubt he will be missed!
May he rest in peace.

What This Is All About
I've been collecting live music from various sources since the mid to late 70's. Radio shows, TV broadcasts, radio show pre-FM CD's and vinyl LP's and some trades. Most of the shows posted here, I recorded and ripped myself. I always had top of the line stereo equipment and cassette and open reel recorders for those on air broadcasts.
I've downloaded plenty of bootlegged concerts from various blogs. As a rule I will only post stuff from my collection and not what is already available out there.
I also post out of print CDs and LPs from my collection.
I will repost from my readers anything someone sends me as long as it is either out of print or something that's not from someone else's blog. If you want to share a link for a cool item on your blog, or someone else's, please feel free to post it in the comments........
Enjoy and please leave a comment and pass this blog along.
Can you believe that so many out there are starving for the old WHFS? Amazing!
If you leave a comment, how about using a nickname instead of Anonymous. At least make up something please. Thanks!
I have reconsidered my position...and will re-upload dead links, so long as you go to that particular post and make the request from the comments page...
