WGTB ROCK AND ROLL MARATHON AUGUST 1978

This post is from my WGTB open reel tape from August of 1978. WGTB used to do all night hard rock and roll shows. Everything from AC-DC to Rush to Van Halen and everything in between. Of course it's all mid 70's hard rock. And all night. Damn shame I only taped a handful of these shows. But what I have kicks ass! So if you're a fan of 70's hard rock and underground radio then download this puppy. One of the interesting parts of the tape is a couple of listeners call in around 2:00-3:00 in the morning. Obviously waisted. Van Halen had opened for Ted Nugent that night at the Capital Center in Landover, MD. The comments on Van Halen,(in their infancy)and Ted Nugent are priceless!
WGTB was a student-run radio station at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. WGTB was founded as the georgetown broadcasting system in 1946 by Rev. Francis Hayden, S.J. In its earliest incarnation, the station was primarily an outlet for news and public affairs programming. The station developed “The Georgetown Forum” during the 1950s which became famous for hosting notable public figures and scholars to discuss the topics of the day. At that time, the studio was located in Healy Hall, and it would often receive complaints from the physics department, also located at the time in Healy Hall, that radio waves coming from the studio were interfering with their instruments.
By the 1970s, the station had shifted course to music-oriented programming. WGTB became well-known throughout the Washington, DC metro area as a voice for new music, and more notably as a voice for the political left, broadcasting anti-war programming across a 60-mile radius. Maintaining a political voice for dissidents of the day established the station as a mainstay among the left-wing community. This stance was the source of considerable friction between the station and the university administration, resulting in several shutdowns, and eventually the end of WGTB. In 1979, to mark the creation of the University of the District of Columbia (UDC), Georgetown donated WGTB’s 6700 watt signal (90.1 FM) to UDC. This signal was later sold by UDC in 1997 to C-SPAN for $25 million.
It's been said that the Pope himself ordered the radio station shut down due to Gay programming and public service announcements telling listners where they might be able to obtain abortions. Not good.

I was at that 1978 Ted Nugent - Van Halen concert at Captial Centre. My bud and I had seen Ted many times in those years but we were just blown away by those Van Halen guys. We were speechless afterwards! Maybe a lot like the guys you have recorded talking on GTB about the concert. I would be thrilled to be able to listen to the comments on this show that I saw long ago. Please, how/where does one download the audio of the Ted Nugent/Van Halen call-in?

By the way, coincidently, that same friend and I talked today about the 3 Van Halen concerts I have just attended in Florida - my first VH concerts since that one with Ted Nugent at Cap Centre in 1978!

What This Is All About

I've been collecting live music from various sources since the mid to late 70's. Radio shows, TV broadcasts, radio show pre-FM CD's and vinyl LP's and some trades. Most of the shows posted here, I recorded and ripped myself. I always had top of the line stereo equipment and cassette and open reel recorders for those on air broadcasts.

I've downloaded plenty of bootlegged concerts from various blogs. As a rule I will only post stuff from my collection and not what is already available out there.

I also post out of print CDs and LPs from my collection.
I will repost from my readers anything someone sends me as long as it is either out of print or something that's not from someone else's blog. If you want to share a link for a cool item on your blog, or someone else's, please feel free to post it in the comments........

Enjoy and please leave a comment and pass this blog along.

Can you believe that so many out there are starving for the old WHFS? Amazing!

If you leave a comment, how about using a nickname instead of Anonymous. At least make up something please. Thanks!

I have reconsidered my position...and will re-upload dead links, so long as you go to that particular post and make the request from the comments page...
