Super Contributer Jim Gives us a Christmas Present!

Camarillo,
This has been fun but here is my last tape from the ‘HFS-102.3 days.  I know versions of this have been posted before.  In fact, I’d be interested if you would repost your last 3 hours tape.  To give it a bit of a twist, I’m including some of the newspaper clippings showing the announced sale of 102.3 to the Outlet Company and the speculation that HFS would re-surface on AM 1390.  Thankfully, that didn’t happen and the long run on 99.1 did happen, although for most of the fans of the old 102.3, the 99.1 years were a slow fade to irrelevance.

Last Hours of 102.3
Here is my last tape of WHFS-102.3 FM Bethesda, MD.  Fittingly it is the last 90 minutes or so of the final sign off on July 14, 1983.  The announcement of WHFS’ sale to the Outlet Company (as shown in The Washington Post story from December 31, 1982), got hundreds of tape recorders busy in the 6 ½ months to follow.  There were many references to ‘The Other Side’ which was intended to be 1390AM.  Interestingly that stirred resistance from another generation, as 1390 was playing a Big Band format at the time.  As we know, that move never happened and the other side ended up being a move across the river to Annapolis and 99.1 FM.

Milo spinning tunes on 102.3 for the last time
Followed by the group sign off and the first verse of the Velvet Underground’s ‘After Hours’ … and the tape fades out…

Jim,
It's been great that you shared all your 'HFS tapes! They sounded great, and it's been a great addition to my massive 'HFS collection!
Thanks again for sharing!

Here's the links for my last shows of 102.3 that I taped on my Akai Open Reel deck...

Thanks for giving me the outlet to post these. I still have a few Top 99.1 countdown tapes from the early 90's. I'll check them out and share if they are in good shape. And thanks for re posting your last hours tapes. Looking forward to giving them a listen.

Any idea if one of the posts here has the bit by the "Balloon Man". "Make the ladies happy, make the children happy...". Been trying to find that forever.

Hi Camarillo,

Robbie White & Weasel have a weekly show on Takoma Park community radio (http://takomaradio.org) most Sunday mornings. Robbie posts shows on Mixcloud (https://www.mixcloud.com/robbinewhite/)

Best,
Suzanne

apologies if I've asked this before, but have you looked at uploading your WHFS recordings to the Internet Archive at archive.org? it's a permanent archive, so the links don't expire, and the community handles track listings and other metadata.

Looks like all the HFS posts are dead links now. Anyway other way to get some copies?

I've been converting my small collection of cassettes and was looking for more.

I'll make a deal with ya, I have over 46GB of WHFS tapes. You send your tapes on a USB Drive large enough to hold all my files, I'll post your tapes on here for all to share. Then I will copy my files to your USB stick, [or SD card or whatever] and I will mail it back to you.

What This Is All About

I've been collecting live music from various sources since the mid to late 70's. Radio shows, TV broadcasts, radio show pre-FM CD's and vinyl LP's and some trades. Most of the shows posted here, I recorded and ripped myself. I always had top of the line stereo equipment and cassette and open reel recorders for those on air broadcasts.

I've downloaded plenty of bootlegged concerts from various blogs. As a rule I will only post stuff from my collection and not what is already available out there.

I also post out of print CDs and LPs from my collection.
I will repost from my readers anything someone sends me as long as it is either out of print or something that's not from someone else's blog. If you want to share a link for a cool item on your blog, or someone else's, please feel free to post it in the comments........

Enjoy and please leave a comment and pass this blog along.

Can you believe that so many out there are starving for the old WHFS? Amazing!

If you leave a comment, how about using a nickname instead of Anonymous. At least make up something please. Thanks!

I have reconsidered my position...and will re-upload dead links, so long as you go to that particular post and make the request from the comments page...
