That's All Folks!

After 1 full year and 450 posts, I believe I have shared just about everything that I have that is worth sharing. I had a great time doing this and what a blast it was getting all the feedback from the WHFS Heads out there. I'll continue to moderate the comments and answer each and every one of them.

And don't forget...

“Information is not knowledge. Knowledge is not wisdom. Wisdom is not truth. Truth is not beauty. Beauty is not love. Love is not music. Music is THE BEST…”---Frank Zappa

Thx in particular for Lone Justice, Jason & The Scorchers, Jerry Jeff, and Prine.

You've turned me on to some amazing music I NEVER would have heard, otherwise.

Don'cha just love how bland ClearChannel radio stations are? You can travel from Florida to Washington, Rhode Island to Texas and hear the same old forgettable crap repeated over and over and over. And it's not just Rock & Roll that's dead. Country is the same way... it's just turning into "lite rock" + Rap. Ugh! Disgusting. I have to go listen to Waylon or Merle Haggard to remember what Country/Western is all about.

This place is a refreshing change. A tutorial of "Good Taste In Music 101". The music people SHOULD be hearing and would, if given a choice.

I've found many new favorite bands here -- and I've been buying used CDs left & right off eBay. My credit card's taking a beating, but my ears thank you. And I thank you! - Jack

Camarillo Brillo said...

Couldn't have said it better myself Jack! You already know what I think of the state of radio these days...Thanks for the awesome feedback!!!

NaplesGC said...

You inspired me to share what I have - Thanks. I'll say, isn't it amazing that you recorded and collected what you did and probably had no idea you'd be able share it like you have the past year to such a vast audience?

Truly the past is now present.

Good luck with your next endeavors and stay in touch.

Thank you very much for the wealth of music you have shared.

I stumbled upon your blog I think late last year when I was looking for some live Rockpile recordings. Thanks to you, I found them, and discovered many more interesting artists and their music.

Your passion for music is awesome -- Keep the fire burning!

All the best,

I've spent the last year listening to HFS at work. Especially appreciate the Bethesda tapes. I lived in Fairfax and the reception at that time was pretty awful. The highlights were the last day in Bethesda, John Lennon obit and Dick Lilliard--but they were all great. And thanks for WRNR, which I had never heard of before.

Living in San Diego, I'm 25 years and a continent removed. So it was nice to get back.

Thanks for all the hard work. I'll keep checking in from time to time. You hinted at one point that you had more WRNR stashed away. Love to hear it.

Thanks again

Camarillo Brillo said...

jebaxt...even tho I have a boatload of WRNR Tapes to rip and share, I really wasn't getting much of a response to the ones I posted and not many were downloaded, so I lost the motivation to get those posted. Someday I may get them out there to share.
It's really cool to hear that someone from the left coast actually found this blog and really appreciates the old 'HFS tapes! Thanks for letting me know!

Wizzard said...

You are the man buddy! Fantastic stuff that you have shared here and by the looks of things everyone really appreciates it!

Anonymous said...

I just wanted to thank you for taking the time to rip and share all that you did. I only wish I had the time to do that with the many concerts I recorded on my VCR over a 20 year span.
You were kind enough to do that, and I'm sure there are many folks out there who appreciate it.
I do hope you'll leave the blog up for people (like myself) to spend time going back through all that good music.
Thanks again, and enjoy your "retirement".

Thanks for the visit to the past. I will be sending you some links to a full set of recordings from WHFS of the top 99 from 1991 and 1992. They are fairly complete and include all commericals, DJ chat etc from those years. My cassette deck is currently on the fritz and I am getting it repaired expressly to rip these tapes. There is some good stuff on those as I recall....

Hey, so nice to run into your blog and to be able to relive the real radio programming and listening community, from the best time of my life. I was with pals in my car honking the horn outside of the studio the night the music died. So many great memories of the station and thanks so much for your dedicated archival service. I should have sent you my cassette recording of Root Boy Slim and the Sex Change Band interviewed by Josh! A fine station with a similar ethic you might want to try can be found at WFMU.org ...original programming with real DJs! All best. Warren

I admit I was uninterested in some age-old radio broadcast 30 years and one continent away. Until I downloaded one of them that is. I would definitely have listened to those shows back then if I had had the opportunity. Not everything is about alubums and hits. It's about the pleasure of listening. And thanks for the Tift Merritt-rip. That lead to the purchase of all her albums and the Austin Tx DVD. It was fun .../R

Camarillo Brillo said...

R, thanks for your comments...It warms my heart to know that this blog helped, and not hurt Tift Merrits career and sales just a bit. Just goes to show that sharing can get the word out. Thanks for taking the time to download some of the old radio shows. As you can see, many out there think the world of them.
Enjoy!

Camarillo--Thanks for doing all of this. This is a public service beyond all others! I'll be sure to turn on other HFS'ers to your blog. Amazing stuff! Any Swimming Pool Q's by chance?

The old HFS was like no other. I was saddened by the recent passing of Tom T. Long live Jake Einstein!

Camarillo Brillo said...

Well said JW...probably got some Swimming Pool Q's somwhere on all these 'HFS tapes...I pretty sure I remember hearing them somewhere in there

Camarillo, thank you for everything! I will miss checking here for stuff I missed years ago.

I just took a trip to Colorado last week and all of the Don Dixon stuff went with me! Chi-Town Budget Show is killer stuff! I never would have known about him if it wasn't for your dedication and love of music.

And other stuff like the Jayhawks and Lone Justice! The list goes on and on!

I guess I'll have to come back and find some other stuff that I missed out on while this is still here.

Question - Do you know what the most popular download was? Maybe I'll start there?

Anyway thanks again! Be safe!

Camarillo Brillo said...

CB.. thanks for posting all this great material! I'm a guy pushing 36 years old, but I grew up with 102.3 WHFS, even have an old brown and gold bumper sticker in a box somewhere. My Mom had good tastes. :)

My uncle is a huge audiophile and I know he's going to flip when he sees your blog here. I sent an email already.. I was too excited to actually READ your blog, I just sent an email saying "You gotta check this out! I have no idea who this guy is, but this is an amazing blog!" I promise I'll actually read some soon and find out more about you, I just couldn't help myself.

At any rate, I'm looking forward to listening to ALL of this. There's so much I know I missed. I might be interested in those early WRNR recordings you have as well, even if you didn't get a lot of response on them yet.

The only radio history recording I have is an MP3 of when 99.1 WHFS switched over to El Zol! Want a copy of that for humor's sake?

Anyway, thanks for all the great material. Me and my family (I'm sure) are greatful and will get many hours of entertainment and nostalgia out of it, I'm sure.

Thanks again!

Thanks for stopping by and leaving some quality feedback! It is very much appreciated...Knowing your uncle and others have a chance to hear the old stuff again is why I got this thing going.
Since closing my blog I've had some requests for more old WRNR tapes...I probably have over 100 90 minute tapes...So I may start a WRNR Blog this winter if I feel the motivation tug...

Camarillo Brillo said...

Sort of completes the whole WHFS thing!
Thanks again Gryffyn!

Well, as usual I'm late to the party. I was googling around for old Little Feat concert videos or tapes and found your site. What a find! I was an AVID HFS listener in the early 80s, living in a group house in Hyattsville, MD (center of the universe!) and attending the U of MD.

All of this stuff plus Crack the Sky, Root Boy Slim, etc were an integral part of my teenage and young adult years in the DC area.

I cannot thank you enough. I will be loading all of this onto my ipod so that I can enjoy radio as it used to be in my car cruising around the beltway.
How can we bring this back????

Wow. I missed it all. Dang. What a GREAT place. Thanks for being here, the presence and all. I see photos of Dweezil Zappa here. I hope you had an opportunity to see Zappa Plays Zappa. We saw ZPZ at the Roseland Theater in Portland, OR. (not a great venue, too much concrete, poor acoustics) and the following evening (or was it the next nigt?) at The Paramount in Seattle, December 2006. Haven't had that much Zappa fun since Frank's Madison Square Garden shows (Halloween and others...) I've been a Frank fan since ~1969. I'm still a Frank fan. Anyway, thanks much for sharing. Yours, Robert

Camarillo Brillo said...

Robert, i saw ZPZ twice..oncein Dc and once in Baltimore...Both shows were killer awesome! In Baltimore, they declared it Frank Zappa day (it was his birthday) and gave the proclamation on a plaque to Dweezil. He was visibly moved...

What This Is All About

I've been collecting live music from various sources since the mid to late 70's. Radio shows, TV broadcasts, radio show pre-FM CD's and vinyl LP's and some trades. Most of the shows posted here, I recorded and ripped myself. I always had top of the line stereo equipment and cassette and open reel recorders for those on air broadcasts.

I've downloaded plenty of bootlegged concerts from various blogs. As a rule I will only post stuff from my collection and not what is already available out there.

I also post out of print CDs and LPs from my collection.
I will repost from my readers anything someone sends me as long as it is either out of print or something that's not from someone else's blog. If you want to share a link for a cool item on your blog, or someone else's, please feel free to post it in the comments........

Enjoy and please leave a comment and pass this blog along.

Can you believe that so many out there are starving for the old WHFS? Amazing!

If you leave a comment, how about using a nickname instead of Anonymous. At least make up something please. Thanks!

I have reconsidered my position...and will re-upload dead links, so long as you go to that particular post and make the request from the comments page...
