George Thorogood Live at the Cellar Door 02-19-1979 WHFS 102.3 FM

This here Gem is from a live on the air broadcast of George Thorogood and the Delaware Destroyers from the Cellar Door in DC.

Broadcast live on WHFS 102.3 FM Bethesda, MD on FEB 19 1979.

Whatever you think about George these days, back in the day he was BAD TO THE BONE. This concert is the best, IMHO, recording of George I've ever heard. Download this even if you're just a casual fan. It won't dissapoint! George and the Delaware Destroyers were friends with Jimmy Thackery and the Nighthawks. The Destroyers and the Nighthawks happened to be playing shows in Georgetown (DC) at venues across the street from each other. The Destroyers were playing at The Cellar Door, the Nighthawks at Desperados. At midnight, by prior arrangement, while both bands played the same song ("Madison Blues") in the same key (E), George and Jimmy left their clubs, met in the middle of M street, exchanged guitar cables and went on to play with the opposing band. You can clearly hear Jimmy Thackery plug in his guitar, and Jam with the Destroyers.

01 Wanted

02 Ride on Josephine

03 Cocaine Blues

04 One Bourban, One Scotch, One Beer

05 It Wasn't Me

06 Madison Blues

07 I Grew Up With The Rock n Roll

08 Can't Stop Lovin'

09 No Particular Place To Go

10 Johnny B Goode

This was taped by me, live, on a TDK AD-C120 cassette tape using my trusty Pioneer 3 head CT-F1000 Cassette Deck.

Krank this one!

The date of this show was 07-27-78.
The song you have listed as "I Grew Up With Rock And Roll" is actually called Delaware Slide".

Camarillo Brillo said...

Well I always tought this was a live broadcast and still do. But if you have evidence, please post it here...Thanks...!

You need evidence to track 7?? lol.

I guess you're really not a fan of George Thorogood then, if you can't work out what song it is.

So i suggest you go out and get his S/T album, and listen to the lyrics to both Delaware Slide and your track 7 here.. Then tell us which song it is lol.

Interesting tidbit From WTOP website:

Places That Are Gone
January 5, 2007 - 1:50pm

Cellar Door and Desperados
If you drive near the Key Bridge in Georgetown today you may not realize it, but music history was made there.

In the 1970s, the corner of 34th and M Streets, NW, housed two venues. On the north side of M Street was the Cellar Door. On the south side was Desperados.

One night music fans, including WTOP Radio's Mark Segraves, saw something they'll never forget.

"I was inside the Cellar Door. George Thorogood and Delaware Destroyers were playing," remembers Segraves. "Across the street at Desperados The Nighthawks were on the stage."

And then, at about 11 p.m., Segraves says, "They both got the cue at the right time. Each band broke into 'Madison Blues.' Jim Thackery of the Nighthawks busted off the stage out into the middle of M Street. George Thorogood came out of the Cellar Door into the middle of M Street."

The soundman from the Cellar Door was standing in the middle of M Street, stopping traffic.

"They traded licks for what seemed to be forever, but I'm sure was only a few minutes. They then traded guitars, and took each other's place back on the opposing stage."

This meeting of the bands happened on a busy weekend night.

"Cars didn't know what was going on. But as soon as the two guitarists came out, it became sort of a group-consciousness thing. No horns were being blown. People weren't complaining. They all realized something cool was going on," says Segraves.

What was the Cellar Door is now a cheesesteak restaurant. Desperados is now the Embassy of the Ukraine.

I'm sad. Megaupload sez the Cellar Door file is no longer available. If you have a chance to post it again I'll be truly grateful. Thanks!

PS Your equipment and record/tape/CD room is astonishing. Congrats on putting together such a voluminous collection. And the listening chair is positioned perfectly!

Thanks for the kind words! You are the 1st to make mention of the gear and office pics
The megaupload link is up and working. Go get it!

Wow. The audio quality is beyond excellent. Many thanks.

I always enjoyed George's music pre-saxophone more so than afterwards. His first record remains my favorite of his work.

Nevertheless, his performance at Live Aid (with Albert Collins iirc) is especially memorable to me. I listened to his rendition of "Madison Blues" as I drove to the hospital in Lynn MA to visit my wife and my one-day-old second daughter. Who says music isn't life's soundtrack?

See you again soon!

mackpayson,
Thanks for the feedack...This is one fine sounding boot and early George is the best for sure.

What a great show - and I know that without even listening to the download (still downloading as I type). I remember that on WBRU-FM in Providence RI back when radio was at its best...I sure miss those days...

Your equipment and set-up absolutely ROCK to the max! A true classic rock ever I knew one. You and your set-up and library remind me of someone I know..lessee, who was that max-buzzed, music-freak dude...?

Oh, yeah - me!

Camarillo Brillo said...

Dan,
Thanks for your kind and encouraging thoughts...It is with great pleasure to hear from fellow max-buzzed, music-freak dudes! I knew someone out there would relate to the music and the gear!
Let me know how George sounds. It is one of my most cherished pieces of music...

I just gave it a listen - and it sounds like I expect and want an FM-to-cassette boot to sound - and that's a compliment!

I am not worthy...I am not worthy...

Someday, I gotta get good with this damned computer, so's I can upload some of the incredible stuff I got from back in the day.

Camarillo Brillo said...

dan, you're worthy already!
Would love to hear some of your cool stuff from back in the day!
If you need some help or tips just let me know..

Regarding the date of this show, between I'm Wanted and Ride On Josephine, George mentions "Thursday night jamboree and hootenany...". 2-19-79 was a Monday but 7-27-78 was a Thursday.

In some photos I found online, people are dressed in shorts and short sleeves. People aren't wearing coats outside. Something you'd expect to see in July, not February. Regardless, thanks for a great show!

Camarillo Brillo said...

You probably are right Bob. I guess it was taped by WHFS and aired at a later date. It's been a while, but for some reason, I always thought it was a live broadcast. Regardless, it rocks!

I was there, I have a copy myself of the WHFS radio broadcast that they did the next day or so (I don't remember).
I have to embarrassingly admit admit I can hear myself scream at that show, the first time I heard Thorogood he could barely half fill the Childe Herolde (forgot the spelling), anyway I saw both nights at the Cellar Door, this was recorded on the second night, I knew something was happening the second night as it took forever to set up and there were like 20 times more cables.
I think the local free entertainment paper called it "the M Street Shuffle" when they met in the middle of M street, (I ran outside and ended up helping hold up traffic as they exchanged cords in the middle of M street and Thackery came into the Cellar Door while Thorogood ran into Desperado's. After the song when Thorogood came back into the Cellar Door, he was covered with sweat and it was flying everywhere, as he said "We just want you to know that we aren't the kind of band that relies on cheap tricks to get a crowd rollin'". The house just about fell down then. Don't know if those are his exact words, I am not sure if it is even on the tape been so long since I played it.

Anyway I grew up in Bethesda (Psyche Deli times) and the Nighthawks were like the neighborhood house band.

Back in those days I was riding a 650 BSA, BMW 600, or a Kawasaki KZ 1000.

Hyperimiator,
Can you verify the date or least let us know if it was played in the Summer?
You're correct, George mentions "relies on cheap tricks to get a crowd rollin" on the tape...
Your grew up in a great time and place!
Thanks for the feedback!

What This Is All About

I've been collecting live music from various sources since the mid to late 70's. Radio shows, TV broadcasts, radio show pre-FM CD's and vinyl LP's and some trades. Most of the shows posted here, I recorded and ripped myself. I always had top of the line stereo equipment and cassette and open reel recorders for those on air broadcasts.

I've downloaded plenty of bootlegged concerts from various blogs. As a rule I will only post stuff from my collection and not what is already available out there.

I also post out of print CDs and LPs from my collection.
I will repost from my readers anything someone sends me as long as it is either out of print or something that's not from someone else's blog. If you want to share a link for a cool item on your blog, or someone else's, please feel free to post it in the comments........

Enjoy and please leave a comment and pass this blog along.

Can you believe that so many out there are starving for the old WHFS? Amazing!

If you leave a comment, how about using a nickname instead of Anonymous. At least make up something please. Thanks!

I have reconsidered my position...and will re-upload dead links, so long as you go to that particular post and make the request from the comments page...
