WHFS DJ Weasel's Last Show on 102.3 Bethesda, MD 07-14-1983
It's a bit chilling and freaky to hear Weasel doing his last show on 102.3 in Bethesda. In the studio with Weasel is Tex Rubinowitz and Bob Margolin reminiscing about the old days.
I must say while listening to this, before I figured out it was Tex, I could have sworn it was Craig from WRNR's Midnight Shift show. I even Googled Tex and Craig in different combos to see if maybe they were one in the same. The similarities in the voice is uncanny.
Weasel goes on to play some tunes from Tex and other stuff that have a 'goodbye' or 'the last one' kind of theme. Like I say kinda freaky. Thank god they were back later, but while taping no one really knew.
I have the tape that immediately follows this. It needs baking and cooling so it will be a couple of days. It's a trip when Weazel plays the final tune and the station goes dead, as I watch the signal strength meter on my tuner drop to zero.
The Stones, Roy Orbison, George Harrison, The Doors, The Blasters, Janis Joplin, Tex Rubinowitz and Bob Margolin Interview, Marshall Crenshaw's Warner Theater Concert promo, The Daily Feed, The Who, Mose Allison, Squeeze, Everly Brothers, Jack Scott, Denny Lane, The Beatles

Kayaker, my brother I listened to this show at our house in Alexandria, VA....I remember the "Daily Feed" about Wanda and Harry's Fish and Chips and how they were going of business! This is freaky to have this show. I remember shedding a tear as my ONKYO TX-3000 signal meters went to zero upon the sign off. Thanks for the memories and thank goodness HFS came back as 99.1 in Annapolis.

history! I remember that long stretch without my HFS. And then magically, it came back on at 99.1. I played it for 12 seconds and got ready to shut it off. My wife started screaming before I was able to kill it off. That was an excellent reason to divorce her. HFS vs. first wife--no contest. Thanks.

Bill and VanFan...it was a chilling night for me. I just stood there looking at my stero with the tape still running shaking my head..
ReplyDeleteBTW, This is also included in one of the tapes shared by Bob. I listened to it last year and I believe it may have started before this one did as I recall hearing more stuff from Bob and Tex...
ReplyDeletethis must be a fake... you tellin' me Weasel played no NRBQ in his final set?
ReplyDeleteSecond half of this coming up in a few days...stay tuned. Might could be some NRBQ on that....We'll see
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone have the Steve Lorber WHFS Mystic Eyes interview with Tex Rubinowitz from late 1979/eary 1980? They were talking about how you know that you are cool. I would love to have that tape. I have sent Jim hundreds of tapes of WHFS and WGTB shows (with more to come), but that Tex interview eludes me.

Every year about this time, I start remembering those classic Halloween and Christmas radio shows on HFS with Weasel and Damien and the rest just riffing for hours. Especially the Halloween shows when we would crank the car radio and go down to Georgetown in the 80's and be part of the freakshow. Best times ever.
