I really don't know a lot about these guys. Back in the late 80's, I happened to be hanging around one evening and taped a KBFH show with these guys live. Over the years, I kept going back to that tape, and just really liked everything about it. Power pop vocals, guitars and just plane good rockin' tunes. Picked up a couple of LP's at the local used record store and really enjoyed those as well. Who are the Cruzados? Damifino....

Steve Hufsteter (sp?) was the guitarist/songwriter for The Quick (an album I LOVED!) so when I saw he was the guitarist here, I bought the album without hearing anything from it.

Biography
Los Angeles, California quartet the Cruzados pursued a relatively fertile power pop groove in the mid to late 80s, a style which might have been predicted by the participants' previous careers. Guitarist and vocalist Steve Hufsteter was a veteran of several Kim Fowley-related Los Angeles groups, including the Quick, Young Republicans and the Falcons, while Tito Larriva (vocals/guitar) and Charlie Quintana (drums) had both been in Plugz (at one point home to future Swans leader Michael Gira). The Cruzados' debut was produced by .38 Special stalwart Rodney Mills, but had few distinguishing features. By the time the follow-up was released Hufstetter had departed and the Cruzados were gearing themselves up for chart action. However, with guests including Paul Butterfield, Pat Benatar and Don Henley, there was still little individuality on After Dark, and the group were certainly weakened by Hufsteter's absence. Song titles such as "Small Town Love", "Bed Of Lies" and "Road Of Truth" spoke volumes about their new bluster and stadium-rock pretensions. With the failure of this project, Quintana departed to join New York band Havalinas.

Tito Larrivaa, of the Cruzados, went on to form the very cool band Tito & Tarantula, and became a close friend of filmaker Robert Rodriquez. Tito & Tarantula appeared on film as the bar band in the Rodriquez/Tarantino flick "From Dusk Til Dawn," performing two incredible songs (that can be found at http://nevergetoutoftheboat.blogspot.com/search/label/CHINGON%20Mexican%20Spaghetti%20Western)
ReplyDeleteTito showed up in more Rodriquez movies as an actor (and also contributed to the soundtracks) in movies like "Desperado" and "Once Upon A Time In Mexico." That's Tito chasing behind Antonio Banderas on the street after the bar massacre scene in "Desperado."

ReplyDeleteThe Cruzados were also in the excellent "Road House" movie. They played two songs at the beginning of the film - "Don't Throw Stones" and "Savior Faire". I have a live, sans cheering at the beginning and end which I edited out, version of "Stones", which I got off a 1986 live album I found on a blog. "Savior Faire" is extremely hard to locate though. Has to be a cover of Family Fodder's 1980 tune, which I have in my extended "Road House" soundtrack.

Without question the first (self titled) album is the best! Although many reviewers parrot the impression that After Dark is the better of the two albums.
ReplyDeleteSteve's guitar(on the first album) playing is much more fluid.
The songs: Hangin' Out In California, Just like Roses, Flor de Mal.. well.. hell.. all of them on the first album, are masterpieces.
After Dark, while a good album, is uneven with maybe two tunes as good as on the debut album.
If you are unsure, get 'em both. That way you can do no wrong!
I saw 'em live a few times in LA during the Motorcycle Girl tour. 1986?? Excellent live!
