Well we solved a mystery from the last WAMU Tape. Seeing how this one was taped on June 29th 1982 it only makes sense the other tape was taped a few days before. The tape is dated 06-27-82 and 06-30-1982 yet the DJ mention's it is June 29th while running throught the Concert Calender.
The DJ's here (Bruce Rosenstein and Lee)also mention that this is the last Overnight Express show. Great tunes and awesome Concert Calender to bring back memories of long lost venues and bands.
There is also an interview with Rupert Chappelle. I really don't know who he is, but here he is announcing a 25 band free concert in D.C. I swear he reminds me of a DeeJay on WGTB way back in the 70's. Apparently he is a ground breaker in alternative music in the DC area. Google his name for his 'MySpace' page and other stuff...
This tape will take you back to the good 'ol days of Underground Music in the D.C. area.
This is just one side of a 90 minute tape. Side 2 is a David Bowie LP.

Rupert Chappelle was one of the many local talents that played the DC venues... For some reason, I am linking him (in my mind) with "Happy the Man". Good Luck trying to find their stuff! I actually have a couple of their CD's and nother Tape if you can't find their stuff.
ReplyDeleteThis tape, and the "other" WAMU tape were the start of my Radio "ripping" (to tape) experience. The ad hoc (real time) editing is no doubt very rough, but the music is great to listen to. (sigh) Gone are the days when you would hear HOURS of music only interrupted by a periodic overdub of "this is WHFS 102.3FM" or other appropriate radio announcements...
So Enjoy these tapes... :) I know I do.

I remember Happy The Man...I might have seen them too...I recall fusion/progressive jazz of the likes of Billy Cobham and George Duke...
ReplyDeleteIt's cool that we are delving into your 1st tapes of quality radio...nope...never gonna be anything like it again...unless you count satellite radio..which I don't need or have...who needs to pay for a subscription for tunes when you have more music then you can possibly listen to in a lifetime.

Rupert Chappelle wasn't in Happy the Man, that was Kit Watkins. HTM was a notable DC area prog-rock band that sounded a lot like Gentle Giant and was frequently featured on WGTB. Chappelle is also a familiar name from this time, but unfortunately I can't place him either!

Wow, somebody hipped me to this link. Cool! I'm the Lee mentioned here, and I still work for WAMU, all these years later...doing Bluegrass music. Would love to get a copy of the final Overnight Express. I may have portions of it on cassette somewhere, but it would be nearly impossible to find, I fear.

ReplyDeleteAnyway -- It is so funny that I have listened to this tape for so many years, and that I am able to turn on so many people (including the originators) to the tunes they did so long ago. A big thanks to Lee and the others that put out such good music for us all to hear (and record!) ...

ReplyDeleteYou are absolutely right -- it was Kit Watkins and Coco Rossell (sp?) that were in HTM -- I loved their stuff... I will have to look for some old Gentle Giant tunes -- A good friend of mine from long ago was into them, but I never had the opportunity to listen to them... We were always listening to other music that was always coming out...
Besides -- I loved going to Kemp Mill and Penguin Feather to look at the cut-outs -- that was a great way to experiment with music without spending a fortune...

Cut outs were a great way to invest in all kinds of music, that's so true. I used to spend most of my hard earned cash at the Record and Tape Exchange in College Park, MD. I easily have over 500 LP's from this guy. Spent many a Sat or Sun afternoon flippin' through the albums in that small crowded little shop...ah the good 'ol days!

Most of it is Bruce Rosenstein's new 45's show, followed by Kim playing a few DC area bands, the Slickee Boys and The Dark. I'll be ripping it to mp3 soon and of course will share it. Re: the College Park Record and Tape Exchange. I went there many times while I was living in Adelphi back in 1978 making the princely sum of $4.25 an hour working for the Government. The used records and tapes fit my budget. One day, I swung a little too wide backing out of my parking spot in front of the store and left some paint on an inconveniently placed telephone pole. I could drive it but couldn't make left turns. A right turn filled trip got me back home where a friend helped me pound out the fender with a sledge hammer. He was a Deadhead, so I always had an appreciation for the Dead after that day!
