This is sort of anti-climatic as I am now in possession of over 100 cassettes sent in by Bill and Robbie, [and will be posting a couple of them a week], but here goes my last Open Reel tape of WHFS from the Bethesda, MD days. Hard to believe but this is the first time I heard it since it was recorded some 25 years ago. And it is just as I remembered. The whole gang get's together for the last minutes, and one last tune, then the station going dead with the sound of white noise and a distance station buried in there. I did not post the play lists. You'll just have to download it and listen to it for yourself.

I love the part where Jake Einstein prepares for the end and in his speech calls the rest of the world mediocre. How cool was that.
ReplyDeleteWay Cool!
ReplyDeleteThanks much for this. I can't wait to listen to this.
ReplyDeleteyou are soooo welcome multielvi
ReplyDeleteWow. The part when the tape goes to dead-air is chilling. I remember much of that night and I was honored that Weasel let me hit the mic one last time. Also, much respect always to David Einstein for giving me the shot. But I'm really blown away by the fact that you the listeners are keeping this flame alive. By the way, it was David Einstein who decided to close out 102.3 with the Velvet Underground's After Hours. Another thing, that whole last broadcast was videotaped. I wonder who has that...
ReplyDeleteJim,
ReplyDeleteWhen I was taping the last show, when the last song played, and the station went dead, and my signal stength meter dropped to zero, I just stood there looking at it thinking how could this happen?
WHFS turned me on to so much good music, and DJ's like yourself made it all happen. Never be anything like it again, thats for sure...Now who has that video tape?
wow what a great find...listening to this right now, in the very same triangle towers ; )
ReplyDeleteOccasionally I see Damian across the street at Flanagan's...the old Psychodelly spot...
I was 13 when this aired! Might as well be new to me, heh.
I was 24...thanks for commenting...same towers huh...cool!
ReplyDeletei downloaded the file, it does not play on my winamp. i'm bummed.. any advice? second question: one of the djs started his show with a very intense beat instrumental. this day, he played the whole tune, with a woman singing a song, a very intense story. i would like to find out what that song was. i'll try to continue to capture the file.. but any help would be appreciated. it has haunted me all these years..
ReplyDeleteradical mom...did you unzip the file? it's an mp3 shouldn't be a problem...sorry I can't help with the intro tune...thanks for stopping by!
ReplyDeleteI've just discovered this and I see megaupload is kaput. Are these available anywhere now (Dec. 2012)?
