The Widespread Depression Orchestra
You may recall I won this LP recently on e-pay after hearing it on one of the 'HFS tapes I was ripping for for this blog. The LP came in today and it immediately was plopped on the turntable and ripped in glorious MP3 at 320kbps for your listening pleasure. If you like Asleep At The Wheel, Cowboy Jazz or maybe even Squirrel Nut Zippers you should like this one. That tune "Barnyard Boogie" will get you going fer sure!

ReplyDeleteI recall this group for some reason and can't wait to listen to it. More applause for this wonderful blog.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the kind words anonymous...whoever you are.....
ReplyDeleteHi Kayaker:
ReplyDeleteWondferful post -- this is the stuff that reminds me of WHFS. You and I have pretty similar backgrounds, I,too, really miss the old HFS -- I started listening to it in 1969 and kept up until the end. Even helped engineer a few of the live concerts from the Cellar Door - Fatboy Slim was one of them.
Check out my blog http://fatcitycigarlounge.blogspot.com and my profile and you'll see what I mean.
For those of you who enjoy this come to http://fatcitycigarlounge.blogspot.com and get the hard to find Robert Crumb and his Cheap Suit Serenaders. A fave. Also posted Danny Gatton's last performance --for those in the know.
Love that your blog is named after one of my favorite Zappa cuts.
Hope to talk to you in the future --Best

I checked out you blog and it is the stuff! Thanks for posting a link here!
ReplyDeleteJohnny Holtzman (then playing as Johhny Holtzman and the Swingbeams after the WDO broke up) played at my wedding reception in 1985. Most excellent voice. I hope he's doing well.
ReplyDeleteAwesome Feedback!

ReplyDeletethanks for sharing this.
jontolwel, indonesia
jontolwel,
ReplyDeleteglad you found it!
Enjoy!
This was one of my father's favorite neo-swing bands and treasured his vinyl copy. I grew up hearing it and was a big fan of the song "boogie in the barnyard." I had "tulip or turnip" in my head for some reason today and after searching for the name of the song, I realised I had no idea who sang the version I knew the best.... a search on AMG points to this record. Downloading now to verify, but I'm pretty sure it's the WDO version that I have in my head. I'm excited to have it and revel in the nostalgia of it.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the feedback Robb Ware. Glad you were able to get it. Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteTHANK YOU!
ReplyDeleteI really like that. Do you also have "Downtown uproar"?
I'm totally into swing and blues now. And while I bought at least 400 CDs the last 2 years, there is still so much missing in my collection. I just can't afford to get everything I'd like to have.
raycast AT hotmail com
raycast...sorry don't have "Downtown uproar"
ReplyDeleteHope you find something else in here...enjoy and thanks for the feedback
WOW....you truly do only publish that which is NOT on other sites. I watched "waitress! '1982" heard tulip or turnip in the background and HAD to find info on this amazing voice and talented band! getting a chance to see who wrote the songs, who played what part as well as the album cover...your blog is a godsend! thank you so much. I have found a copy of the LP for myself (it was a must for my collection have after your help). keep up the good work. Dont stop groovin!
