Billy Idol Malibu Night Club, L.I.N.Y. 04-29-1982

Idol was promoting his first album, just released at the onset of the tour from which this recording was made, when he performed this show to be broadcast by WLIR for the King Biscuit Flower Hour. This show is a tour de force that includes many classic Idol songs now affiliated with his career: including “Hot In the City,” “White Wedding,” “Dancing With Myself” and “Mony Mony.”

Even though this performance was taped early on in their partnership, the magic between Idol and Stevens is clearly a strong one. He and Stevens brought the punk edge to the standard singer/guitar scenario that duos like Jagger/Richards, Bowie/Ronson and Tyler/Perry so carefully crafted; it's a relationship that is still going strong today.

For a relatively new band, the performances from this night are amazingly tight. They excel on the old Gen X song “Kiss Me Deadly,” and rock out hard on several others: including “Dead On Arrival,” “Nobody’s Business,” “It’s So Cruel,” “Ready Steady Go” and “Come On Come On.”

Brian Setzer Live From "The Knife Feels Like Justice" Tour

Brian Setzer's "The Knife Feels Like Justice" album is a criminally overlooked album. It is not a rockabilly, Straycats type record. More like Bruce or John Mellencamp. But much edgier and rockin'. I would post it but it is still available on Amazon and other places. So I will do the next best thing and offer for your listening pleasure, a live show from the tour to promote his 1st solo album.

This recording, done for the King Biscuit Flower Hour in 1986, came in conjunction with the tour to promote Setzer’s first solo album, The Knife Feels Like Justice. Musically, Setzer wanted to embrace the Americana rock scene, and emerge as a modern-day Springsteen or Mellencamp. It wasn’t meant to be, and despite the fact that Setzer had some great songs (“Maria,” which was featured in this show, was actually co-written with Steve Van Zandt from the E Street Band), radio refused to accept him outside of the Stray Cats persona. Still, Setzer gives a spirited performance here, focusing mostly on material from The Knife Feels Like Justice. “Bobby's Back,” ”Something's Wrong With My Radio,” “Breath of Life,” “Chains Around Your Heart,” “Boulevard of Broken Dreams,” and the aforementioned “Maria,” are show highlights. Setzer, does, however, treat fans to a taste of his previous glory days with energized versions of “Stray Cat Strut,” and “Rock This Town.”

Bonnie Raitt VH1 Storytellers

This is another Bonnie show ripped straight to my hard drive from DVR.

One of pop's most politically conscious guitar slingers reminisces about learning the blues lingo during her heady college days in Harvard Square, emphasizing her words with occasional tosses of her long red mane. Raitt also reveals how the title song from her breakthrough album Nick Of Time changed a friend's relationship for the better, and explains the Zimbabwean roots of a song from her latest album, Fundamental. Other highlights include a heart-wrenching take "I Can't Make You Love Me."

Bonnie Raitt Live at Montreaux DVD Audio Rip

Ripped to my hard drive a while back, here is Bonnie Raitt Live at Montreaux.
Appearing at the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival in 1977, Bonnie Raitt had been supporting her release SWEET FORGIVENESS, which featured her first charting single, a cover of Del Shannon’s "Runaway", which would peak at #57 on the Billboard Pop charts.
Although it would still be 12 years before she became a national star, this 1977 show proves she was no stranger to the Blues community, pulling selections from her 6 albums at that point. This performance offers a rare glimpse at Bonnie Raitt years before she became the darling of the music industry.

Also included is a taste of her 1991 performance at the Festival, which features a performance of "Three Time Loser" from the aforementioned SWEET FORGIVENESS album, along with "Good Man, Good Woman" and "Papa Come Quick" from her 1991 effort LUCK OF THE DRAW.

Track listing:

1. Under The Falling Sky
2. Walk Out The Front Door
3. Good Enough
4. Nothing Seems To Matter
5. Love Me Like A Man
6. Give It Up, Or Let Me Go

Mark Knopfler and Emmylou Harris - Live On Soundstage

Mark Knopfler and Emmylou Harris - Live On Soundstage at the Gibson Amphitheatre in Los Angeles

Aired last night on WHUR and ripped to my hard drive today is a pretty cool performance from Mark and Emmylou. A great venue, a great tour, two great artists and a great performance. So it was for icons Mark Knopfler and Emmylou Harris at the Gibson Amphitheatre in Los Angeles before a sold-out crowd. Their concert together, one of only a handful in the U.S., followed the release of All the Roadrunning, their long-awaited rootsy collaboration. That special night has been captured in this unique Soundstage episode. Highlights include the title track “All the Roadrunning,” Emmylou’s “Red Dirt Girl” and Knopfler’s “Speedway at Nazareth".

Frank Zappa, Halloween at the Palladium, NYC 10-31-1977

Recorded while promoting his Zoot Allures album, Zappa had taken to the road with a band that can only be regarded as an all-star line up. Nearly every musician who had a tenure with Zappa went on to remarkable musical careers, and these men are no exception. Guitarist Adrian Belew would join Talking Heads, King Crimson, and eventually launched a successful solo career. Bassist Patrick O’Hearn and drummer Terry Bozzio would later spearhead the alternative act, Missing Persons, with wife Dale; and keyboardist Peter Wolf (not the J. Geils Band vocalist) eventually became one of the most successful producers of the 1980s, scoring chart hits for Starship, Lou Gramm, Big Country, and many others.

Patty Smyth: Never Enough Vinyl LP Rip

This is a rip of my vinyl copy of Patty Smyth's LP "Never Enough".
It's as good as any Scandal release in my opinion.
I tossed in a couple of bonus tracks not shown here.

1. Never Enough
2. Downtown Train
3. Give It Time
4. Call to Heaven
5. River Cried
6. Isn't It Enough
7. Sue Lee
8. Tough Love
9. Heartache Heard Round the World

Nice Amazon Contributer Review:
By Daniel J. Hamlow (Chikusei City, Japan)

It seems unjust that Rob Hyman and Eric Bazilian of the Hooters musically made their best mark with only their first album. The artists they wrote for and produced albums for seemed to do better. One artist they propped up was Patty Smyth, best known as the voice of Scandal--("The Warrior", "Beat Of A Heart"), and although it didn't do well, I consider Never Enough to be one of the best albums of the 1980's.
For the most part, Never Enough expands on Scandal's sound to a wall of rock guitar with the usual 80's-accompanied keyboards. Smyth's edgey, robust voice is easily demonstrated on the rocking title track. A girl meets the man of her dreams, and that promise in the dark they made together ends up being lost in the storm forever, to paraphrase. She learns the cost of freedom, which becomes a secret the man shared to something we all can share. Easily the best track here.

Her cover of Tom Waits' "Downtown Train" betters Rod Stewart's 1991 version. It matches her persona, pretty but not in an artificial model-glamorous sort of way, street-smart, wearing a leather jacket and mini, tough but loyal. When she mentions the line about Brooklyn girls being thorns without the rose, and she says, "Oh if I was the one/you chose to be your only one" it reminds me of tomboy Mary Stuart Masterson telling Eric Stoltz about Lea Thompson in Some Kind Of Wonderful. David Sanborn has a nice and all-too brief sax solo.

"Call To Heaven" is a sobering rock ballad of a soldier at war who captured by enemies and executed by firing squad, exploring the minds of both sides. The guitars and Patty's vocals go up a notch from this verse on: "Gather 'round reluctant marksmen/One of them to take his life/With a smile he gives them pardon/Leaves the dark and takes the light." The chorus goes "What a night though it's one of seven/What a night for the dancing dead/What a night to be called to heaven/What a picture to fill your head." The second best track.

Ace songwriters Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly contribute the heartbreaking but winning "The River Cried." Why? "The river cried for my lonely soul/You were the only one who really knew me/And hearing this, the river cried." Another poignant line: "Waiting for you to return my sigh."

"Isn't It Enough" is a note of advise that "I fit you like a worn-out glove" so be content of the title concept. "I'll satisfy your fire but I'm not made of stone" gives her a tough but vulnerable quality.

The quick-paced "Sue Lee" co-penned by Rick Chertoff, could've been covered by Journey. The title girl seems to be a refugee living in poverty. However, the lines "She smiles when she looks at the world around/With her high-top sneakers and her hard-rock sound" might fit Smyth as well.

"Tough Love" is a hard-driving number on fighting the competitive battlezone of those mean streets. "Heartache Heard Round The World" is co-written by Hyman, Bazilian, Chertoff, and Smyth, and the effort shows. When she sings "I'm no angel, but I'm not so tough" reinforces that vulnerable side of her that makes her more human. The title is the sound that knocks her down, and her wish is more than fulfilled when she says "I wanna be a rock and roll girl."

Smyth gets quality help here. Not only do Hyman and Bazilian do backing vocals but so do Rory Dodd of Meat Loaf fame and Rick Chertoff, the producer of Cyndi Lauper's She's So Unusual. Never Enough is one of those one-of-a-kind albums whose true appreciation was, well, never enough

Two completely different, but interesting shows form DJ's Janet and Chris.
Janet had a great Saturday morning show called Woman Of Note.

Laughing Colors: The Pattern Seed

The Pattern Seed features many LC listeners’ favorite songs. Highlight tracks include “Wrinkle”, “Sense”, and “Big One, Small One”. “Wrinkle” is featured on the HFS New Rock Sampler, and is the first and only track by an unsigned band to be included on the compilation. “Wrinkle” was also voted “Song of the Year” by Music Monthly. “Jigsaw” is the theme music for the Maryland Wrestling Association, and has been featured in televised extreme sporting events. According to LC frontman Dave Tieff, “this album is based on the idea that everyone has a way of going about their dailylives. Most people start out the same way, but then they evolve… It’s not a concept album, but there is definitely a thread running through the lyrics and songs.”

Laughing Colors: Depth

This eight-song EP propelled LC to national recognition, and is still one of LC’s top selling albums. This album contains eight tracks, including three LIVE tracks. It features the single “Solution”, which play listed on Baltimore’s 98Rock (WIYY), for over 3 months, receiving 25+ spins per week. It was a top requested song in nightly countdowns, and received airplay on numerous other commercial and college stations throughout the US. The attention that “Solution” garnered through airplay and features in numerous television and sports productions is normally unheard of for an unsigned band. From the ‘stuck in your head’ melodies of “Solution” and “I”, to the more aggressive unbridled riffs and rhythm of “Mushroom”, this album is a testament to LC’s cutting edge style.

Laughing Colors: Nothing But Sky

Just got this in the US Mail from Amazon yesterday. I am a big Laughing Colors fan. Shame they broke up. Another great local band that deserved so much more. One of the best live shows anyone can see anywhere. And always for just a couple of bucks. No doubt, IMO, influenced by Crack The Sky, and most definetly 70's and 80's classic rock and early 90's grundge.

WXZL Rock 103, Michael Buckley: The Sunday Morning Show

Michael Buckely had a show on WXZL, and what would become WRNR, on Saturday and Sunday mornings. These were mellow shows, but were definetly not whimpy. A nice laid back atmosphere, spinning some cool tunes. Perfect for sipping some coffee and relaxing on a weekend morning. This tape has a half dozen or more tunes that I don't know who the artists are, due to the tape running out before the DJ did his setlist run through. Taped on Sunday Morning on the 24th of July 1994.

Nice Review From Amazon.com
By Jason M. Carzon (bowie, maryland United States)

If you clicked on this, you already know John Palumbo is the leader/vocalist/songwriter for the band Crack The Sky, who still plays live on the east coast but mostly for the old fans and on the strength of the early Crack The Sky albums. Often any subsequent releases got ignored and suffer from dodgy production and on various fly by night indie labels. A worse fate befalls any time Palumbo does solo work. A shame, as this album I find to be more interesting than some of Crack The Sky's albums from the same era.

VICTIM OF THE NIGHTLIFE was released around 1989, after Crack The Sky's decent FROM THE GREENHOUSE album, and there are similarities in the overall production and sound. But where GREENHOUSE was a concept album in an almost Pink Floyd vein with a bit of the usual Crack harmonies and guitarwork flavors, VICTIM draws some influece from R&B and 80's rock sounds. Unlike most of Crack The Sky's albums, there are plenty of synthesizers and programmed drums here, as well as female backing vocals. Bad news for 80's music haters, but if you dig that sound you may like this. It's a unique album which really would have been a hit had it been better produced and promoted by a major label. But that's a tired subject. His version of Walk On The Wild Side is a keeper. The last cut is pretty good as well. At this price, you get your money's worth with those two tracks alone.

Palumbo cuts a dark figure, hiding behind his sunglasses, like Lou Reed, Lennon or Ric Ocasek. Perhaps he was too antisocial to be a big star. Or maybe people just didn't know what to make of him. Though not the best vocalist on earth, neither was Dylan or Jonn Lennon. John Palumbo does have a unique and identifyable voice. At least you know its him. These days he makes music for fun, and has long since accepted that Crack The Sky won't change the world or set the charts on fire.
But check this album out if you like Crack The Sky. Complete the collection. If you never heard Crack The Sky but like 80's rock, buy it to hear a lost chunk of late 80's music. The trax:

DRIFTING BACK TO MOTOWN - a tribute to Motown sounds with plenty of references.

WOLVES - good atmosphere and vocals here. I don't think he would have done this with Crack The Sky, hence the purpose for solo records.

OLD FIRES - big guitars and big chorus/Def Leppard sound.

UNDERCOVER - nice 80's pop sound with female vocals and plenty of keyboards.

WALK ON THE WILD SIDE - funky and moody version of Walk On The Wild Side which is totally reworked and bears little resemblance to the original Lou Reed classic.

DANCING WITH THE FUHRER - bit of a heavy metal sound on this track about the dangers of just blindly going along with things.

THE DANGEROUS TYPE - a Robert Palmer type track, possibly the weakest one here.

LOVE IS LIKE A HEART ATTACK - soulful track with female vox.

GIRLS LIKE YOU - a pulsating new wavey track kinda in the style of The Cars. One of the best on the album. Good closer.

Good forgotten 80's album. Can't go wrong with it, it's mostly decent stuff.

Crack The Sky: Debut Vinyl LP

Crack the Sky is the debut album by American rock band Crack the Sky, released on LP in 1975 by Lifesong Records (catalog #LS-6000).
If you don't know who Crack The Sky is do yourself a favor and download this and Animal notes.
I have had these two LPs forever and listen to them frequently.
All the Crack The Sky albums I posted here are worth a download. The music is serious, the vocals are great, guitars are awesome. The lyrics by John Palumbo interesting and thoughtful. If you like prog rock, hard rock, intelligent music, whimsical like Zappa or Thomas Dolby or maybe even Martini Ranch then you know what you are in for. Ripped today in MP3@320, so enjoy this masterpiece.
I go to plenty of music blogs and see stuff posted of bands I never heard of and often I just fly by looking for something familiar. These guys wouldn't post their favorite albums to share if they didn't strongly think someone else out there would enjoy them as much as they have.

From Wikipedia
Crack the Sky is a progressive rock band formed in Baltimore,USA in the 1970s. They have had only meager success, but continue to release records to a small but devoted fan base to this day.

History

1970s
Crack the Sky traces its roots to an early seventies band called ArcAngel, which featured John Palumbo on vocals and Rick Witkowski on guitar.

Crack the Sky was formed in the mid-seventies by Palumbo and Witkowski, after they signed with Lifesong Records. In addition to Palumbo and Witkowski, the original band included other former members of ArcAngel: Joey D'Amico on drums, Joe Macre on bass, and Jim Griffiths on guitar.

In 1975, the band released their critically acclaimed first album, the eponymous Crack the Sky. Although declared the "debut album of the year" by Rolling Stone magazine, promotion and distribution problems prevented its widespread success.[1]

Animal Notes, the band's second album, was originally written as a rock opera about the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Like the band's debut release, it was critically acclaimed, but the high concept and lack of "radio singles" contributed to lack of sales.

As a result of a breakdown in communications with their record label, and a divergence in creative approaches, Palumbo left the band in 1977 to pursue a solo career. The remaining band members, with vocalist Gary Lee Chappell, released Safety in Numbers in 1978. In addition, the live album Live Sky was released by this lineup of the band. Following this, Crack the Sky disbanded, and Classic Crack, a greatest hits compilation, was released by Lifesong in 1980.

1980s
In 1980, Palumbo reunited with Witkowski and keyboardist Vince DePaul to release White Music. This record featured a number of the "singles-quality" songs that had earlier proved elusive to the band, including "All American Boy", "Skin Deep", and "Hot Razors in My Heart."

Palumbo reformed the band once again in 1981 with DePaul, Carey Ziegler, Michael Taylor and John Tracey, and produced Photoflamingo. This release, and subsequent efforts including World in Motion 1 and The End, failed to garner the critical and public acclaim of the earlier releases, and the group disbanded again in 1983. A notable song from this era is "All Fly Away", about the fears of nuclear holocaust.

Palumbo released the studio album Raw in 1986. Although the album has the signature Crack the Sky sound and feel to it, it featured no past members of the band besides Palumbo (guitarist Jamie LaRitz is the only other musician credited).

Palumbo reunited Crack the Sky with Witkowski, DePaul, Ziegler, and D'Amico for a series of live shows in 1986 at the Baltimore club Hammerjacks. Between then and 1989 this band performed a number of shows in the Baltimore area, including Painters Mill Music Fair.

In 1988, Palumbo joined with Witkowski, DePaul and D'Amico to produce From the Greenhouse, in many ways a return to the band's classic sound, with solid efforts including the title track and the song "Lost In America". During this time, this lineup performed occasionally in the Baltimore area with Ziegler joining on bass.

1990s
Crack the Sky released Dog City in 1990. The period between then and 1996 saw little activity except for the release of the compilation disc Rare! in 1994.

Palumbo gathered the band together again in 1996 beginning a series of live shows at small venues in the Baltimore area. The band at this time featured the same lineup as 1993's The End, with the addition of Nat Kerr on keyboards. A new studio album, Cut, was released in 1999, as well as a double disc release featuring one of the band's live shows at the Recher Theatre in Towson, Maryland.

2000s

Crack the Sky (Rick Witkowski and John Palumbo), June 26, 2004Crack the Sky continues to perform occasional live shows and collaborate on new music under Palumbo's guidance. The albums Ghost and Dogs from Japan were released to critical acclaim in 2001 and 2003, respectively, and the band continues to enjoy a devoted fan following. The band completed a new concept album in 2007, entitled The Sale, which features the return of original bassist Joe Macre performing and co-producing the record with John Palumbo.[citation needed]

Safety in Numbers is the third studio album by American rock band Crack the Sky, released on LP in 1978 by Lifesong Records (catalog #JZ 35041). Lead singer (and sole songwriter) John Palumbo departed the band during the recording; the band pitched in to write enough songs to round out the album, and they recruited Gary Lee Chappell to sing. Interestingly, only the original band members are pictured on the back cover of the album, with Chappell and Stevens relegated to one small photo each on the inside sleeve. There was a tour in support of the album (documented on Live Sky and Alive and Kickin' Ass), after which the band folded. In 1980, Palumbo and guitarist Rick Witkowski started a new version of the band and released White Music.

Crack The Sky: White Music Vinyl LP Rip

Shame that this fine band never got the recognition they so much deserved. As far as I can tell all their albums are out of print. Too bad. They can still however be found used on Amazon and e-bay. Not the best CTS album but a good one nonetheless. Saw these guys live, whoa! What a show! Here's a vinyl rip of my LP.

GRAHAM PARKER: The Mona Lisa's Sister, Vinyl Rip

I was thinking about this LP the other day. "Get Started, Start a Fire" was the single that WHFS was playing, and it was one of those tunes, that really makes you want to drop everything and run out and get the album. I have tons of Graham Parker albums, and this one is my favorite! I dig every tune! This was one of the last "new release" albums I would buy on vinyl. The year was 1988 and that Fall, I finally broke down and got my 1st CD player. Apparantly, this album is out of print. Pity...Anyway, here is a vinyl rip of my LP.

Ranked #97 in Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Albums Of The Eighties survey.

Nice Rolling Stone Write Up:
The Mona Lisa's Sister,' Graham Parker's most compelling record in nearly a decade, is a raw meditation on desire and disappointment from a man who has felt – and feels – with a fierce intensity. In song after song, Parker examines how media images conspire with our own fantasies to create insatiable needs – and to drain satisfaction from any pleasure that is merely human scale. The wonderful paradox is that even as Parker has fashioned an album whose tough resignation is a razor's edge removed from despair, he finally manages to meet the torturous standard of his own ambitions.

By now, everyone who cares knows how Graham Parker and his backing band, the Rumour, became critics' darlings in 1976 by blending R&B soulfulness and punk insurgency on their first two albums, Howlin' Wind and Heat Treatment. As Parker got mired in battles with his record company – "I'm the best-kept secret in the West," he later complained on the aptly titled "Mercury Poisoning" – Elvis Costello outflanked him and quickly assumed the role Parker had vacated, that of the pun-loving angry young man.

When the powerful 1979 album Squeezing Out Sparks failed to win him the audience he deserved, Parker sank into creative confusion. The albums kept coming – The Up Escalator (1980) and, after the Rumour split up, Another Grey Area (1982), The Real Macaw (1983) and Steady Nerves (1985) – but no combination of producer and players seemed able to unlock Parker's heart.

Consequently, The Mona Lisa's Sister has all the fervency of a last-ditch effort. It is a record that, like John Lennon's Plastic Ono Band, Bob Dylan's Blood on the Tracks and Bruce Springsteen's Tunnel of Love, is driven by a purpose that is as much personal as it is artistic. Clearly, Parker is out to prove something to himself as well as to say something to the world.

To ensure that he'd stand or fall on his own efforts, Parker seized control of all aspects of The Mona Lisa's Sister. He coproduced the album with Brinsley Schwarz, one of the Rumour's original guitarists; Andrew Bodnar, also from the Rumour, plays bass. When Atlantic, Parker's label, began to suggest changes, Parker bolted to RCA and made the company promise to release the album his way.

That was quite a demand. Unlike Parker's recent albums, this record is stripped to the bone, and the lack of fussiness underscores its serious intent. Parker's acoustic guitar provides the primary instrumentation, giving the record a folkie, intimate feel. Schwarz on electric guitar, Bodnar on bass, James Hallawell on keyboards and Terry Williams on drums play virtually all the rest of the music, and they perform with a sensitivity to nuance and a respect for Parker's songs indicative of a band, not a gathering of studio professionals.

Parker's furious struggle with self-doubt provides the drama at the heart of The Mona Lisa's Sister. The opening track, "Don't Let It Break You Down," starts out sweetly as a message of encouragement in the face of the world's "everyday evil." But when Parker tears into his critics ("They have the nerve to/Rip up a man's life/In a paragraph or two"), bemoans the elusiveness of success ("You'll see a winning post/In the distance/That you'll never reach") and brays the song's title with gathering urgency, he could be singing into a mirror. The anger he summons on that track finds expression again on the simmering single "Get Started Start a Fire," where he tells the tale of three victims, including Marilyn Monroe, and recommends the purifying power of revenge over passive suffering.

The ballad "I'm Just Your Man" – a lovely call for levelheaded romance – is haunted by a touching sense of regret. Even as Parker tells his lover, "I'm not a page in history.... I'm not a hero.... I'm not a burning comet that/Fell out of the sky," his very insistence on being seen in human terms is partly fueled by his own disappointed aspirations to greatness. For his lover to see him as more than what he is would stir ambitions that have been uncomfortably laid to rest – and that might prove too painful to arouse. In a strange way, the song is as much an apology as it is an eloquently direct declaration of love.

Given this rich emotional density – in which love, identity and achievement are inextricably bound, and sometimes indistinguishable – it's fitting that the album's most gripping moment is a song titled simply "Success." The tune begins quietly, with Parker intoning the opening verse: "The dreams and hopes of men/Are powered by addiction/And who am I to say that/This is an affliction/When everybody gets/Suckered in and lives their/Lives like fiction/Writing their own story/Of success."

The bitterness heightens as Parker chants the song's title over and over, frequently pronouncing it "suck-cess," his voice seething with a lacerating contempt. But at times the repetition edges close to invocation, as Parker's dashed hopes lace his vocal with an unmistakable longing for the rush success inevitably brings to those who, like him, are addicted to it.

"Success" is followed by "I Don't Know," where a Buddy Holly lilt and catchy "dum-dum-da-dum-dum" background vocals counterpoint lyrics that abandon the possibility of self-knowledge. "I don't know why it's not enough/To feel moments of mighty love," Parker sings. "I can't know why my heart is chilled." The song's effect is a kind of stunned cheerfulness.

Yet after such staggering journeys through a jungle of contradictory emotions, Parker ends the album on a surprising note. Despite the insufficiency of those "moments of mighty love," Parker hauls out Sam Cooke's "Cupid" for the closer – as unambivalent a prayer for undying romantic love as American vernacular music has produced. Parker's rigorously faithful, deeply felt reading of the song is not ironic in the least – and it suggests the necessity of maintaining ideals, however troubling and difficult that might prove to be.

That sentiment echoes "Fool's Gold," Heat Treatment's closing number, which Parker alludes to on this record when he sings, "There must be gold where fools are," in "Blue Highways." In the earlier song, Parker passionately vowed to "keep on searching for that fool's gold" – vehement conviction in quest of ambiguous goals being about as characteristic a Graham Parker stance as you could imagine. But on The Mona Lisa's Sister, Parker, like an alchemist, has transformed his fool's gold into the quintessential real thing – and fully justified his search. (RS 526)

Having been inspired by Naples over at http://naplesgc.blogspot.com/, I am posting one of my tapes that probably took a couple of weeks to put together. A lot of stuff from Rock Over London had rare live cuts and alternative mixes. If you can handle the crappy bitrate and want to hear an eclectic mix of late 80's radio, check it out...The date on the tape is the date of the last item taped. Enjoy!

What This Is All About

I've been collecting live music from various sources since the mid to late 70's. Radio shows, TV broadcasts, radio show pre-FM CD's and vinyl LP's and some trades. Most of the shows posted here, I recorded and ripped myself. I always had top of the line stereo equipment and cassette and open reel recorders for those on air broadcasts.

I've downloaded plenty of bootlegged concerts from various blogs. As a rule I will only post stuff from my collection and not what is already available out there.

I also post out of print CDs and LPs from my collection.
I will repost from my readers anything someone sends me as long as it is either out of print or something that's not from someone else's blog. If you want to share a link for a cool item on your blog, or someone else's, please feel free to post it in the comments........

Enjoy and please leave a comment and pass this blog along.
Can you believe that so many out there are starving for the old WHFS? Amazing!

If you leave a comment, how about using a nickname instead of Anonymous. At least make up something please. Thanks!
