WHFS 99.1 FM: Damian's Sunday Night Blues Show 11-04-1990

Damian's Sunday Night Blues shows were something the WHFS of the 99.1 era relegated to Sunday nights. Back in the day on 102.3 we didn't need a night dedicated to the Blues. They played 'em whenever it felt right to. This 94 minute recording from Nov 11 1990 is smokin' hot from beginning to end. No Commercials, PSA's, Weather, No Nuthin', just Damian describing the bands in detail and a great rockin' Blues set. It's a classic!

It was always about the music and for a generation of listeners to his local radio shows Damian Einstein was the pied piper. From the moment he hit the airwaves from an apartment turned radio station high atop Triangle Towers in Bethesda, until his last shows in March, he offered up a cornucopia of music to thousands.

Tomorrow evening those people who came to "Feast your ears," as old WHFS radio's logo beckoned, will honor Mr. Einstein the only way they know how - with music - at a concert in Annapolis.

"We are just showing Damian the love," said Michael Macey, who grew up listening to Mr. Einstein and later came to work with him as an engineer at WRNR in Annapolis.
...
After Mr. Einstein went off the air in March, Mr. Macey and Music Guide publisher Becky Cooper were lamenting the loss of the on-air personality, especially his local music show that featured area musicians.
...
Mr. Einstein is humbled by the effort insisting he was in it for the joy of it.

"I always played music for music's sake," he said. "I have always gotten along with people.
...
It did not take them long to put together a list of local performers beholden to Mr. Einstein for early support back in the day.
...
All of those had an early relationship with Mr. Einstein and WHFS, or later WRNR.

"It was my pleasure, it was an honor to play their music," Mr. Einstein said. "There were an amazing amount of players in the D.C. area. That's why I thought it was imperative to support local music."

But the breaks Mr. Einstein extended to musicians did not stop at local bands and musicians.

In the early 1970s the studio at WHFS was constantly jamming when bands came by to promote a local show. Mr. Einstein and his colleagues, played up and coming future stars long before other stations gave them air time.
...
"He had a keen ear for the music, deciphering who was excellent," Mr. Einstein's wife Patty Ebbert said.
...
For Mr. Einstein the next influence came from hanging around playing basketball in the black neighborhoods around Denton, where he grew up with his six siblings.

There he found the funk and rhythm in soul music. Then later, when he had taken a job selling ads at his father's small radio station, he soon took the midnight shift on the air. That was in 1970.

The music scene in and around D.C. was hot in those heady days. But for Mr. Einstein it almost ended in a car wreck in December 1975.

He and two friends were in a pickup and went through a dead end in a park, hitting a bridge. His two friends were killed.

Mr. Einstein was in a coma for weeks with severe head trauma and multiple fractures, including his neck. It took two full years of therapy and determination to come back.

"I wanted to get back on the air, to my music and my people," Mr. Einstein said.

He never fully gained strength in one arm and leg, and has used a cane ever since. It also affected his speech, but not his love for music and those who played it.
...
"These are all old friends, now," Mr. Einstein said.

Kim Richey OOP CD's and Bootleg Megapost

In the comments section of my recent Radney Foster post, a reader made mention of Kim Richey, so I decided to take a look and see what may be out of print and available to post here. So here you go.
For me it is hard to believe these CDs are all out of print. Pitiful! Everyone of them is a fine collection of singing, songwriting and musicianship. How people like Kim, Michelle Shocked, Lucinda Williams [finally getting noticed], Tift Merrit, Kathleen Edwards and many many others slip through the cracks is beyond me. Yet we all know the very best are not, and never will be, part of the mainstream. Hell, Bonnie Raitt spent 20 years in relative obscurity so maybe it can happen to others. Anyway, here's a bunch of cool stuff from my collection of one of my favorites, Kim Richey. Hope you find something in here you like and, when she comes around you will go see her!

1. Those Words We Said
2. Here I Go Again
3. You'll Never Know
4. That's Exactly What I Mean
5. Let The Sun Fall Down
6. Just Like The Moon
7. From Where I Stand
8. Sweet Mysteries
9. Just My Luck
10. Can't Find The Words
11. That's A Lie
12. Echoes Of Love
13. Good

Richey finds her inspiration in the Southern-California country-rock of Linda Ronstadt and the Eagles, and the folk-rock of Tom Petty and the Byrds. The album is full of Beatles-esque touches, such as the string quartet on "Can't Find the Words," the odd McCartney-esque intervals on "Let the Sun Fall Down," or the open tuning and uptempo, three-part vocal harmonies on "Good." If Nashville labels can keep releasing country tributes to the Beatles, surely there's room in town for a woman who can come up with new Beatles-esque songs. And inasmuch as Richey is exploring the strain of the Beatles' music that comes straight out of the Everly Brothers and Buddy Holly, surely there's a country audience for her. --Geoffrey Himes

1. Every River
2. I'm Alright
3. Wildest Dreams
4. Straight as the Crow Flies
5. I Know
6. Fallin'
7. To Tell the Truth
8. My Whole World
9. Lonesome Side of Town
10. Don't Let Me Down Easy
11. Let It Roll
12. Why Can't I Say Goodnight

This sophomore album may suffer slightly in comparison with Richey's stunning, self-titled 1995 debut, but there wasn't much else out there in 1997 that it didn't eclipse. Richey is a stellar songwriter (with several hits by others to her credit) whose own records straddle the rock/country divide, placing her squarely in commercial limbo. But it's our loss that there isn't a niche for songs like the gorgeous "Every River," the insanely catchy "I Know," the subtly '60s-ish "Lonesome Side of Town," and the devastating "My Whole World." Richey's voice is not Nashville's most distinctive, but it communicates a full range of emotions, and she abets it skillfully by double-tracking her own harmonies. The playing, writing, and fascinatingly varied stylistic touches here are a joy to hear; Richey's career merits your undivided attention. --Ken Barnes

1. Can't Lose Them All
2. Other Side Of Town
3. Come Around
4. Lay It Down
5. Hello Old Friend
6. The Way It Never Was
7. Good At Secrets
8. Keep Me
9. If You Don't Mind
10. So It Goes
11. Long Way Back
12. Didn't I
13. I Will Be the Strength In You
14. Gravity

Maybe David Cantwell's review below is a bit premature. This album is great from start to finish!

Kim Richey's first two albums fit, one way or another, into that vague sound called alternative country, but like many other acts in the genre (Old 97's, Wilco), Richey has mostly chosen to leave country behind for the sound of pure pop. Glimmer sounds less like a poppy Steve Earle and more like a barely twangy Fleetwood Mac or Sam Phillips, which would be wonderful except she doesn't pull it off. The problem's not the absence of twang; it's the absence of any pop appeal to do her songs justice. Throughout, producer Hugh Padgham fashions similar arrangements that bury Richey's rich voice and subtle hooks in atmospheric washes: strings that never soar, keyboards that noodle, guitars that jangle prettily--the album seems textureless. Consequently, even gripping songs like "Didn't I," "Hello Old Friend," and "The Way It Never Was" come off disappointingly flat. There are glimmers of insight in these cuts, but they deserved to shine. --David Cantwell

1. Girl In A Car
2. A Place Called Home
3. Me And You
4. The Circus Song (Can't Let Go)
5. Fading
6. Without You
7. Reel Me In
8. No Judges
9. This Love
10. Good Day Here
11. Electric Green
12. Hard To Say Goodbye
13. Cowards In A Brave New World

Nashville's loss is Kim Richey's gain. Though she has written chart-topping hits for Radney Foster and Trisha Yearwood and pursued a recording career on the fringes of the country mainstream, her fourth and best album sounds like a fresh start. It certainly doesn't sound like contemporary country, as the artist and producer Bill Bottrell (who helmed similarly creative breakthroughs by Sheryl Crow and Shelby Lynne) collaborate on a sensually bluesy song cycle that shows a determination to defy categorization, follow its own musical dictates, and find its own audience. The album-opening "Girl in a Car" sounds like it could have been a highlight for Lucinda Williams, while the languid atmospherics of "Fading," "Without You," and "Reel Me In" have a seductive intimacy that is equal parts torch song and lullaby. From the Wurlitzer organ on "The Circus Song" to the bouzouki that lends an Eastern tinge to "This Love" and "Electric Green" (the latter written and sung with Pete Droge), the stripped-down arrangements accent the freshness of the material. --Don McLeese

WHFS DJ JOHNNY RIGGS JAN AND FEB 1993

This cassette, taped on two different dates is full of good tunes, but another example of 'HFS sliding into the curse of corporate radio. It's rare they can even play two tunes in a row without some kind of self promotion, and Johnny Riggs thinks he's too cool for his own britches. But hey, if you like all that stuff, here you go. I wouldn't post this if it wasn't worth a download as there is still enough good tunes to make it worth it.

Radney Foster OOP CDs Del Rio, Texas, 1959 and Labor of Love

I recently purchased tickets to see Radney at the Ramshead in Annapolis. So I checked to see what CDs might be out of print so here's a couple for your listening pleasure. And, they can be had for next to nuthin' at Amazon.

Couldn't have said it better then this review from Amazon...

By Steven Clem Haley "Steve is in Stillwater" (Stillwater, Oklahoma United States) -
I'm not a country aficionado. And the fact that I used the word aficionado proves that I am far too pretentious to be an expert on the Nashvillian ilk.
But dad-gum there are times when you just have to stick the Miles Davis and Alan Hovhaness back in the jewel case and drive the ol' Chrysler with the windows down across the Panhandle. And when those times come, this is the cd you need to be listening to.
Foster is Country and Western's answer to Marshall Crenshaw. He cannot write a bad tune. He cannot write an unclever phrase. But alas, he also cannot get the publicity he so richly deserves.
The pictures he paints in his songs makes you actually concerned about the people who live 6 miles from I-40 on FM1643. They make you hope things turn out for them. They make you want to call your grandfather and talk about the wheat crop. They make you want to go just out of town and hear "the lonesome sound of diesels winding up the grade".
I will probably never become a fan of country music. But if country turns more like Foster's work, I may indeed buy me a hat and some snakeskins.

1. Just Call Me Lonesome
2. Don't Say Goodbye
3. Easier Said Than Done
4. A Fine Line
5. Went For A Ride
6. Nobody Wins
7. Louisiana Blue
8. Closing Time
9. Hammer And Nails
10. Old Silver

As half of the Nashville duo Foster & Lloyd, Radney Foster blended the sounds of the Byrds and the Everly Brothers into lightweight country-pop tunes. On the solo Del Rio, TX 1959, Foster wades out into the deeper currents of country tradition and fishes out a Texas-swing honky-tonk album so good it could have come from George Strait. The title refers to the time and place of Foster's birth; it was a year when Texan George Jones topped the country charts with "White Lightning." When Foster tells a departing lover, "Don't say goodbye, just slam the door," the twangy kiss-off recalls the unvarnished frankness of Jones's heyday. --Geoffrey Himes

Another Amazon review.

By Todd W. Smith "asburypark30" (Midway, KY)
This was Foster's 2nd solo album, released on Arista Records. It's a solid album, though it doesn't capture his full potential. At the time, Radney was coming off the success of "Del Rio,TX 1959", an album that scored him a few top 20 hits. I think he was still striving for radio singles, perhaps a little too much so. This album was about as mainstream as he ever got. However, Radney's received a little too much heat for this one. Mainstream Radney is still better than 98% of what's out there. There are two standout tracks, "Last Chance For Love" and "Making It Up As I Go Along". These songs are more on the cutting edge than the others. They are also the best and WOULD have made the best choices for singles. The songwriting is stellar Foster. The ballad "Never Say Die" ended up on the first Dixie Chicks album. "Jesse's Soul" is an ominous tale about a righteous man's 30 year old appointment with vengeance. "Broke Down" is a catchy Bakersfield-style romp with a metaphor that compares a "broke down" relationship to an auto's breakdown on the highway. "Everybody Gets the Blues (But I Know How To Keep 'Em)" is a great hook as well as a good song. The lyrics of "Making It Up As I Go Along" are extraordinary. The opening lines, "There are nights I've owned this town, most nights it owns me. Play my guitar 'til it draws blood, but it still won't let me be", set the tone for an epic tune. Radney tells how dreams gradually get abandoned over the years. When he says, "I ain't no smarter than the rest of these clowns, I'm just making it up as I go along," Foster is talking about his life as well as his songwriting. The song ends with a killer guitar solo. It isn't quite country, folk, or rock. It just IS, and it's so right. Radney definitely touched on something here that a lot of people have felt about their lives. Anyone who calls themselves a Radney Foster fan should not hesitate to own this one.

1. Willin' To Walk
2. Labor Of Love
3. My Whole Wide World
4. Never Say Die
5. Jesse's Soul
6. Everybody Gets The Blues
7. If It Were Me
8. Broke Down
9. Precious Pearl
10. Last Chance For Love
11. Walkin' Talkin' Woman
12. Making It Up As I Go Along

Ever since the late 1980s, when he was half of the Nashville duo Foster & Lloyd, Radney Foster has been a master at mixing together rock and country influences in a manner sophisticated and timely, yet earthy and soulful.

Foster and Lloyd OOP Albums

Here are a couple of out of print albums from a great, IMHO, country rock band Foster & Lloyd. Radney Foster is the creative force behind this band, and he's a great songwriter and has several CD's out. Just all around fun music and great guitars and a sound that I just dig. I tossed in a 3 song snippet from Austin City Limits. Don't bug me about the crappy bitrates. All this can be purchased on Amazon for next to nuthin' if you want it perfect.

Foster & Lloyd stood out from the contemporary country pack in the late '80s thanks to Radney

Foster's intelligent, literate lyrics; Bill Lloyd's flair for memorable pop melodies; and the duo's Everly Brothers-style close harmony singing. It was an influential mix that, in its own way, helped pave the way for country's crossover success of the '90s. Foster & Lloyd met in 1985 while working as staff songwriters for the MTM publishing firm. Foster had grown up in Del Rio, TX, and attended the University of the South, a liberal arts college in Sewanee, TN, before moving to Nashville to make it in the music business. Lloyd, meanwhile, was a native of Bowling Green, KY, who loved the chiming, Beatlesque sound of power pop nearly as much as country music. When their composition "Since I Found You" became a hit for the Sweethearts of the Rodeo, Foster & Lloyd managed to score a record deal of their own with RCA on the strength of the demo tape they'd recorded together. Their self-titled 1987 debut was a hit, paced by the Top Ten singles "Crazy Over You," "Sure Thing," and "What Do You Want From Me This Time"; a fourth single, "Texas in 1880," made the Top 20. Their 1989 follow-up album, Faster & Llouder, received equally complimentary reviews from critics and sold fairly well, but didn't spin off hit singles in quite the same way. 1990's Version of the Truth confirmed their commercial downturn, and the duo subsequently split up to pursue solo careers. Foster recorded several solo albums during the '90s, veering between neo-traditional country and roots rock, while Lloyd returned to his power pop roots on two '90s albums of his own, also working often as a session guitarist. ~ Steve Huey, All Music Guide

This is Dick lillard
In addition to the show I did on WHFS I'd had an earlier one on WMOD_FM from 1973 to 1977(WMOD was the FM side of WOL-AM in those days which was an R&B powerhouse til WHUR blew us out of the water).I now do an occasional show on sunday nights on WKHS FM(90.5)In worton, MD -playing the same stuff, talking less(I hope!).No pay, just for the H--- if it!It's actually a high school station that allows adult volunteers to do radio in the evening. You can hear it in much of Baltimore and Delaware up the the pennsylvania line.

Wow!!! Thanks for checking in Dick!
I just regret not having made more tapes of your great show!

Bruck Cockburn live 1981 - Rumours Of Glory Audio Rip

I purchased this DVD from the same guy I got the live Thomas Dolby DVD from. He converts VHS tapes and other video sources to DVD.

Check him out here:
http://antisoshal.com/video/

This concert in 1981 at the Music Hall in Toronto was documented by the film Rumours of Glory, directed by Martin Lavut. It is pretty awesome and a real rare slice of early Bruce Cockburn live.

Here's the description off of the website:

Bruck Cockburn live 1981 - Rumours Of Glory
Tuesday, 17 October 2006
A live movie filmed in 1981 on 16mm film, this was shown on Canadian Television and limited theatrical release. Coming in a little under an hour and a half, the picture is good for being essentially an amateur film, with the worst part being the poor response to stage lighting from using stock film rather than film meant for that sort of environment. The sound here is fabulous and is literally CD quality. Coming in around an hour and 20 minutes, the quality rates a 4 and songs are as follows:

The Trouble With Normal
Going Up Against Chaos
Wondering Where The Lions Are
Radio Shoes
Creation Dream
Rumours Of Glory
Civilization And Its Discontent
Momma Just Wants To Barrelhouse All Night

WRNR: Chris Then Craig Dec 5-6 1997

In the late 90's and early 00's WRNR was truly a "Freeform Progressive" radio station. Occasionaly, before I hit the rack, I would pop a tape in my Kenwood auto reverse cassette deck, and record 'til the tape ran out as I dozed off. I have scores of these tapes and will post 'em as I rip 'em. The Midnight Shift tapes from DJ Craig are exceptional to say the least. Very few commercials, just music, concert promos and the occasional weather report. Here is another fine Maxell 90 minute WRNR tape of DJ's Chris then Craig recorded Wed Evening and Thursday Morning Dec 5th and 6th 1997.

Tift Merritt: Austin City Limits 10-20-2005 Audio Rip

I got a chance to see Tift at the Ramshead in Annapolis, MD a while back. Went by myself, because I didn't really know what to expect, and most of my concert buddies want something a bit more on the rockin' and blues side of things. Well she rocked the roof off the sucker! It was a great show. She has plenty of passion and her band was smokin'. I was in the front row, and she's gorgeous on top of everything else! Here's a couple of tunes from an Austin City Limits show broadcast in November of 2006 and ripped to my hard drive.

In 2002, after signing with the Lost Highway label, Merritt released her debut album Bramble Rose to wide critical acclaim, including selection by Time as one of the top-10 CDs of the year. The Times called it "the best release by a new artist, in any genre." While this first release was largely an alt-country affair, her follow-up release, 2005's Tambourine, took her in more of a rock/soul direction. The album was produced by famed roots rock producer George Drakoulias and featured backing by Benmont Tench and Mike Campbell (of the Heartbreakers) and Don Heffington (of Emmylou Harris's Hot Band and Lone Justice). Tambourine was honored with a 2004 Country Album of the Year Grammy nomination. In 2005, Merritt and Tambourine were also nominated for three Americana Music Awards by the Americana Music Association: Album of the Year, Artist of the Year, and Song of the Year for Good Hearted Man.

His lightning-fast speed has earned him a reputation as the guitarist's guitarist - hardly surprising that readers of Guitar Player magazine voted him "Best Country Guitarist" five years running.

11. Sneakin' Sally Through The Alley [bonus track]

Click The Pic To Zoom In

Robert Palmer's third album is a blue-eyed soul disc that sits comfortably alongside Sneakin' Sally Through the Alley and Pressure Drop. This time, Palmer drops the orchestrations that tarted up portions of Pressure Drop in favor of a stripped-down yet stylish sound that shows off his ability to create a romantic, soulful mood. Highlights include "One Last Look," a lush breakup ballad that features a catchy, harmony-drenched chorus, and "Keep in Touch," a romantic tune that highlights Palmer's vocal style at its seductive height over a jazzy yet mellow melody built on a complex background vocal arrangement. Another standout track is "Man Smart, Woman Smarter," a tongue-in-cheek look at the battle between the sexes that deftly blends pop melodic ism with reggae rhythms. The downside of Some People Can Do What They Like is that it often favors mood over hooks and this leads to music that is listenable yet falls short of being truly compelling: funky mood pieces like "What Can You Bring Me" and "Hard Head" successfully evoke a sultry mood but never take that mood in an interesting melodic direction. Another problem track is "Off the Bone," an effects-drenched instrumental snippet that serves no purpose other than to fill up two minutes of the album's running time. Despite these occasional lapses, Some People Can Do What They Like remains a solid and likable outing with enough memorable moments to please anyone who enjoys blue-eyed soul at its most silky and elegant. ~ Donald A. Jon Astley: Everyone Loves the Pilot and The Compleat Angler

When I'm in the mood for Thomas Dolby, Jon Astley always seems to come to mind as well, and then I've got to put on one of Jon's albums too! If you don't know much about him, and you like T.D., then here's a chance to get to know him better. One album is a vinyl rip and the other a CD rip.

The first album by Jon Astley followed the release of a single called "Jane's getting serious" which was a chart entry in the States. The album has since become a rare Eric Clapton collectible as he plays on the above mentioned track.
Jon's links with Clapton came from the early 70s when he was a tape operator for the Rainbow concert which is where he met his own co producer Phil Chapman who had run the British Phil Spector fan club in the 60s.
Everyone knows about Astley's skill as a producer, but his personal music went largely overlooked. I heard "Jane's getting serious" on alternative rock stations, and it had a bit of airplay, but the rest of the album went ignored. Big mistake. He writes modestly intelligent rock, and has a way with a catchy bit of rhythm guitar and keyboards. The beats are always just a bit different than what you would expect, and are very hypnotic. Worth a listen... There are a few cuts that are marginal, but "Jane", and "Target Practise" and "Better Never than Late" are good tunes. "Jane" is particularly good, and deserved the airplay it got.

In addition to a short-lived singing career with Atlantic Records, British-born Jon Astley has made a name for himself as a masterful producer of re-issues, particularly surrounding the Who's back catalogue. A student of the great Glyn Johns during the '70s, Astley developed a working relationship with Pete Townshend that began when he co-produced (along with Johns) the Who Are You project. It was Astley who took a 25 minute demo of the classic title track and edited it down to a (still) epic 6 minute track. Astley then teamed with Eric Clapton for his Just One Night album before re-inventing himself with the rise of the digital age. When the Who's back catalogue was to be re-mastered for CD release it was Astley who got Townshend's nod as the producer and his tightly sequenced, sparkling sounding productions have endeared Astley to the often cantankerous guitarist. ~ Steve Kurutz, All Music Guide

The Wanktones: Live at the Fontana Bowlarama

Here's a kick butt rawkin' CD from my collection.

Featuring Mark Noone of D.C.'s Slickee Boys. "They just about put any other rockabilly band to shame." The Wanktones 'Live At Fontana Bowlarama' is excellent American Rockabilly from a great 4-piece who rock like crazy. Their music is fast 'n' rockin', featuring some mean twangy guitar licks and great vocals.

This is a fine demonstration of this band's broad range of talent. While keeping it light and lots of fun, the Wanktones move from stone-cold rockabilly into hardcore C&W without missing a beat. A great performance from this wild foursome, they also do a wonderful version of the Irish classic "Danny Boy." With some Bob Wills and some Buck Owens thrown in for good measure, the Wanktones prove they are one of the hottest live acts around. With the authentic sounds of real bowlers in the background, there is something seriously authentic about this band and this recording. While a studio project can be manipulated and made to sound great, the real test of a performer's mettle is the live performance, and the Wanktones pass with flying colors. ~ Jana Pendragon, All Music Guide

Finally, the legendary Wanktones can be heard on CD. Ersel Wank, Del Marva, Moe Sloe and Hooter McFeeley careen recklessly down the highway on this one. 14 tracks, including "Hoy Hoy", "Little Pig", "Cotton Pickin' Rocker", "Danny Boy" and a bunch of other classics. The pins were crashing and the beer glasses clankin' on this one.

WHFS DJ Weasel's Last Show on 102.3 Bethesda, MD 07-14-1983

It's a bit chilling and freaky to hear Weasel doing his last show on 102.3 in Bethesda. In the studio with Weasel is Tex Rubinowitz and Bob Margolin reminiscing about the old days.
I must say while listening to this, before I figured out it was Tex, I could have sworn it was Craig from WRNR's Midnight Shift show. I even Googled Tex and Craig in different combos to see if maybe they were one in the same. The similarities in the voice is uncanny.
Weasel goes on to play some tunes from Tex and other stuff that have a 'goodbye' or 'the last one' kind of theme. Like I say kinda freaky. Thank god they were back later, but while taping no one really knew.
I have the tape that immediately follows this. It needs baking and cooling so it will be a couple of days. It's a trip when Weazel plays the final tune and the station goes dead, as I watch the signal strength meter on my tuner drop to zero.

Danny Gatton & Robert Gordon: Humbler- Live

See the look on Robert Gordon's face?
Kinda says it all!

Here'a couple of 3 reviews found on line mashed together:
This is a legendary performance; the bootleg recording was a prized possession among guitar players for many years. And now I'm thankful it has been made available on CD and I was able to obtain a copy of it. This is just incredibly fun to listen to!
As some other reviewers have pointed out, the quality of the recording is very good but might not quite be up to modern standards. But it is plenty good enough, and we're lucky to have a recording at all. How did it come about? That's part of the legend: When Gatton showed up a few hours before the show that night for a sound check, the technicians working at the club couldn't believe what they were hearing and quickly scrambled to record everything as best they could. And it's a good thing they did!!

The title gives only a clue to the talent Danny Gatton posesses. Here we here the late legendary guitarist absolutely blister a set of rockabilly standards and lesser knowns. Gatton was unknown to many in the crowd. He remains such to far too many people today. But for those in attendance in this small venue, a legendary performance unfolded. Nearly everyone came to hear Robert Gordon belt out his usual fare and were treated to Gatton's simple undescribable fret work. On track after track Gatton pushes himself and the band over the top. The set is cut short as the fire department puts a halt to the fireworks due to overcrowdedness in the tiny bar which was home to the white hot performance. This albumn was bootlegged for years but is now thankfully available to the masses. This is even more appreciated since Danny is gone from us and there ain't no more like him that's for sure.

If you are interested in rockabilly guitar playing, this is an important album to own. Gatton runs through his bag of rockabilly tricks with humbling speed and accuracy.
As far as being enjoyable listening, it is fair. Vocals, drums and bass are adequate, but fairly uninspired. Gatton's playing is marvelous but sometimes so over the top it detracts from the song - like he is on 11 all the time.

The quality of the recording is good, although it lacks some of the high frequency content of a modern recording. It is 48 minutes long with 15 songs. It is a mono recording bootlegged off a mixing board during a 1981 club show on the band's fourth gig together.

Since this album is mostly rockabilly, you won't hear the full range of Gatton's musical abilities (but you still get a lot in 48 minutes!). You get an appreciation of his technical proficiency. The soloing, while technically astounding, sometimes comes off as gimmickry as Danny wedges so much material into 3 chord rock(-abilly) songs. Of course gimmickry is permissible, encouraged, and perhaps even a hallmark of rockabilly, so if his soloing comes off as gimmickry maybe that is a neutral or positive comment. More specifically, some of the soloing is sped up and fancied up riffs from Rockabilly standards such as "Hello Mary-Lou" or "Rock-Around-the-Clock" - songs which he ain't playin' when he borrows the riffs. Some of his later recordings, like Redneck Jazz, feature more complex arrangements as Danny is not limited, as he was on this gig, to mostly 3 or 4 chord standards.

Another CD from my collection ripped to my hard drive a couple of years ago. Enjoy!

Top Ten does the total freakout jam in "The Cool And The Crazy". He also does the Byrds-style pickin' on "Judas Kiss". All of Scott's guitar work is panned left, while Eric be jammin' on your right. Frankie "Choo-Choo" Funaro can be heard gleefully pummeling his drums throughout and especially on "I Play The Drums". Manuelo rides shot gun right up the middle "with de bottom most bass". All songs were recorded on stage at Dr. Rockits except for "Wastin' Time Talkin'" which was actually recorded two nights earlier at Lee's Palace in Toronto.

The Del Lords Frontier Days Vinyl Rip

Another 'HFS staple from the early 80's...here is a vinyl L.P. from my record collection that was ripped a couple of years ago to my hard drive.

Between 1984 and 1990, the Del-Lords released four studio albums plus a mini live album. Most of their output has been made available on CD except the first two LP's which have never been reissued on CD, even though some songs can be found on Get Tough (the CD Best Of). With guitarist Scott Kempner (once Top Ten of the Dictators) penning the material but occasionally relinquishing lead vocals to guitarist Eric "Roscoe" Ambel, the Del-Lords embraced rock's basic components with such skill and verve that they outshone most everyone else on the scene. Wall Of Voodoo, The Ugly Americans LP Vinyl Rip

From my vinyl LP collection and lovingly ripped in WMA format to my hard drive years ago.

Andy Prieboy picks up nicely where Stan Ridgeway left off. Wall Of Voodoo's rendition of Johnny Cash's "Ring of fire" is awesome.

The Ugly Americans In Australia Vinyl Release 1988
Produced and mixed by: Barry Rudolph & the Band

Red Light (3:45)
Crazy, Crazy Melbourne (5:39)
Wrong Way To Hollywood (4:37)
Living in the Red (3:50)
Blackboard Sky (4:45)
The Heart Never Can Tell (4:35)
Far Side of Crazy (4:17)
Ring of Fire (5:47)
Mexican Radio (4:44)

The Band:
Chas T. Gray (Keyboards, Backing Vocals, Bass Guitar)
Roger Mason (Keyboards And Backing Vocals)
Andy Prieboy (Vocals, Keyboards)
Ned Leukhardt (Drums, Percussion)
Marc Moreland (Guitars)

The Review Below refers to the CD that has two more tracks than the vinyl LP.
There must be a law or something, because every live album seems to follow the same, clichéd order of events: crowd cheers, band takes the stage to a huge, crashing chord, crowd goes nuts, crowd noise fades, band plays a few famous songs, band digs up a relic from its backcatalogue, tired old men crank out a few more famous songs, end with biggest hit to date.

This is not your typical live album.

First aberration from the norm: instead of cheering, the Melbourne, Australia, crowd boos heartily-albeit in a friendly manner-and the first sound is not a grand chord in a major key; rather, it is a drum machine thumping the simple beats to "Red Light."

Second difference: "Red Light" featured Stan Ridgway, the band's original lead vocalist, on the album version, whereas this live version has Andy Prieboy at the mike. This is something akin to Sammy Hagar opening a Van Halen concert with a David Lee Roth-era song or Brian Johnson kicking off a show with a Bon Scott tune-i.e. an odd move, to say the least.

Third peculiarity: The second track, instead of being a barn-burner hit sure to rev up the crowd, is not a real WoV song at all. Rather, it's an amusing little lounge-singer ditty praising Melbourne for its cultural diversity-"you've got everything from restaurants/ to kiddie porn."

Fourth funky move: following this dubious compliment, the band rocks through two excellent, original numbers unavailable on any studio album. Original songs on a live album? And two of them in a row? This is heresy!…but I like it. Track three is one of the best songs in the WoV oeuvre, a musically catchy and lyrically evocative tale of harsh street life in Hollywood, and track four…I dunno what it's about, but it's mesmerizing and, not incidentally, a bit creepy. (Matter of fact, most of the songs on this disc are at least slightly creepy…)

The first (and second and third) expected song(s): the fifth tune, a hallucinatory quasi-love song, is the first appearance of a studio track originally recorded with Andy Prieboy. Oddly enough, out of the eleven tracks on the disc, only three (tracks five, seven [one of this reviewer's all-time favorite songs], and 11) are versions of album tracks featuring Mr. Prieboy on vocals.

Fifth unexpected track: track six is another previously unrecorded song, this time a Woody Guthrie cover tune. Perhaps it's not entirely unexpected…on a previous album the band included a more-than-slightly twisted version of a Patsy Cline standard, but it's one thing to record a version of another artist's song on a studio album and another thing altogether to release it for the first time on a live album. And who the hell rerecords 1930's folk tunes for popular rerelease anyway?

At last, the lone cliché: track nine is another cover, this one previously released, of Johnny Cash's famous "Ring of Fire," which originally featured Stan Ridgway. The reason this qualifies as a cliché is that it's an oldie in the band's repertoire; their first release, which was also a live recording, included this song on the set list.

And almost, but not quite, trite: track ten, WoV's lone hit, "Mexican Radio," is the next-to-last song on the album; if it had been last, that would have qualified as a live album cliché, but it is disqualifed on the grounds of not being the last song on the disc. That honor goes to the previously mentioned track eleven, a much lesser-known song off a nearly unknown album.

Sure is odd, eh?

Ellen Foley: Another Breath Vinyl LP Rip

Here's a cool artist I knew nothing about until someone on the audiokarma.org music forum kept going on and on about how good she was. Then one day I was ripping a WHFS tape and David plays her cover of Robert Palmer's "Johnny And Mary". It sounded so nice I had to play it twice! I bought the vinyl LP on e-bay for a couple of bucks and was pleasently surprised. Check her out...

Her first big break was singing the duet with Meat Loaf on "Paradise by the Dashboard Light" from the 1977 album Bat out of Hell. Although Karla DeVito is featured on the video, she is miming to Foley's vocals.

She can be heard on The Clash album Sandinista! in the song "Hitsville UK". All four members of The Clash appeared on her 1981 album The Spirit of St. Louis and Mick Jones and Joe Strummer co-wrote a number of songs for the album. The Clash's hit song "Should I Stay or Should I Go", written and sung by Mick Jones, from the Combat Rock album, was about the turbulent relationship he shared with Foley at the time.

Foley also recorded a memorable duet in 1980 with Ian Hunter, "We Gotta Get Outta Here". She later sang on Joe Jackson's 1984 album Body and Soul, most notably on the duet with Jackson entitled "Happy Ending".

As Ellen Foley published her third LP "Another Breath" in 1983, again she turned heads by being able to have Vini Poncia as a producer. He is well known for his successful work with Leo Sayer and Ringo Starr. The experienced expert in audio mixing discovered refinements in Ellen Foley's voice that must have escaped his predecessors. Spectacular interpretations of songs such as "Johnny And Mary" (Robert Palmer), "Come And Get These Memories" (Holland/Dozier/Holland) and "Let Me Be The One You Love" (by cult-composer-team Desmond Child and David Landau) again brought her the best critiques in all major music publications. Full of enthusiasm "Music Week" wrote: "Who could have thought that Robert Palmer would be so happy about a cover-version of his hit. The whole album is along these lines: sparingly used arrangements, good songs and above all this voice that doesn't bore you for a minute."

Tommy Keene: Songs from the Film

Tommy Keene was a young, indie-label-associated power-popper from the cusp of the South--the suburbs of Washington, D.C., to be exact--when he signed with Geffen and hooked up with former Beatles engineer and Elvis Costello producer Geoff Emerick for 1986's Songs from the Film. The songwriter and roiling lead guitarist commenced to make one of the era's more sadly overlooked albums, belatedly issued on CD a dozen years on with a passel of EP and previously unreleased tracks added. Propulsion, tune, and heart come together gloriously on "Places That Are Gone," "Gold Town," "As Life Goes By" and "Back Again." --Rickey Wright

Tommy Keene: Sleeping on a Roller Coaster- CD EP

Some reviews:
Tommy Keene, originally from Washington DC, has been turning out exquisitely crafted jangly guitar pop for almost twenty years now. I first heard him in the mid-eighties when a friend recommended his PLACES THAT ARE GONE EP. Always a sucker for a well-turned hook, I was as much impressed by his command of the genre as I was confused by the fact that he wasn't a superstar.
Thankfully he's managed to continue recording despite the lack of sales. I've purchased each album and never been disappointed!

This five-song EP was released in 1992 after a three-year absence following his epic BASED ON HAPPY TIMES (currently deleted). Every tune is great and representative of the rest of his catalog. It's a steal for the price.... just listen to the samples!

By Andrew Otwell "heyotwell" (Seattle, WA)
If you didn't already know Keene's stuff, you wouldn't be reading this, so you've probably already sought this one out.
Despite the omission of the title song (which showed up on "The Real Underground"), this EP is possibly the most perfect example of guitar-driven power pop ever recorded. Worth 3 times the cheap used price above.

By Don Kelly (Washington, DC USA)
I have three Tommy Keene albums - and I wonder how he didn't become a big star. His songs are great and this is another prime example.
One star deducted because his songs all seem to go to the same sound - a great sound - but after a whole album's worth it is a little redundant. This may be due to the fact that I just started listening. Sometimes with more time invested the differences unfold themselves to my untrained ear.
So, well worth buying - but don't expect it to be the only cd you will ever want to listen to. It may become ONE of your desert island discs.

Tommy Keene: Isolation Party

Amazon.com
As a keeper of the '60s pop rock flame during the synth-pop days of the 1980s, Tommy Keene put the non-existent Washington, D.C. power pop scene on the map with a series of EPs and eventually several albums for a major label. Years later, now recording for the reputable indie label Matador, Keene is still sticking to bright, chiming guitars and quick, catchy tunes. Though no single cut stands out as the obvious "hit," the cumulative assemblage of tracks such as "Long Time Missing," "Getting Out from Under You," and "The World Outside" make for an extremely pleasurable trip down power-pop lane. --Rob O'Connor

Tommy Keene: Places That Are Gone- Vinyl EP

Short but sweet!

Tommy Keene
Places That Are Gone
Dolphin DLP-2003, 1984

Keene's first LP (1981's Strange Alliance) gained a lot of press, but not the radio attention of this 1984 12" EP for Dolphin. In addition to the memorable title song (rerecorded later his first major label LP), Keene crafted four more chiming, hook-filled guitar tunes and a wickedly good cover of Alex Chilton's "Hey! Little Child." Keene continued to produce consistently fine records (from 1986's Songs from the Film through 2006's Crashing the Ether), but as with so many artists, this first spark of youthful exuberance marks a special place in his catalog.

Tommy Keene: Ten Years After CD

If you like Power Pop no one does it better than Tommy Keene! Too bad this dude never got the reognition he deserves. Saw him a while back and he rocked the roof off the the sucker!
Ten Years After contains thirteen numbers fitting nicely between melodic Pop and energetic Rock - all driven by Tommy Keene's guitar work. If Keene had two brothers, they might well be Bill Lloyd and Matthew Sweet. Ten Years After isn't interchangeable with the albums of Lloyd or Sweet, but fairly close. The energy of fuzz-guitar rockers such as "Going Out Again" and "Turning On Blue" is intense. Keene weaves catchy lyrics and hum-along melodies (Today And Tomorrow, On The Runway) into well-crafted Pop jingles. Whether attacking the guitar with vigor (Compromise), or gently strumming the strings (Silent Town), his playing is arousing. The band can rock hard, lay down jangling guitar harmonies (Your Heart Beats Alone, Good Thing Going, Before The Lights Go Down), and add convincing touches of country (If You're Getting Married Tonight).

1. Going Out Again
2. Turning on Blue
3. Today and Tomorrow
4. Your Heart Beats Alone
5. If You're Getting Married Tonight
6. On the Runway
7. We Started over Again
8. Silent Town

Tommy Keene - guitar, vocals

Ted Nicely - bass, vocals
Doug Tull - drums

Razz - Airtime 7":
Marianne / Cherry Vanilla // Love is Love / Hippy Hippy Shake

O'Rourke 1003?/Limp Records 030, 1979

Lineup: Michael Reidy - vocals / Tommy Keene - guitar, vocals / Bill Craig - guitar / Ted Nicely - bass, vocals / Doug Tull - drums

Recording Info: Recorded live, edited by Skip Groff.

Notes: Sleeves reprinted in the 1980's when Skip ran out.

Skip's Comments: I think Airtime was one of the greatest records ever to come out of DC. I edited it. That was my entire involvement in it, aside from putting it out.

They had done a concert for DC101 live from a local venue, and I'm sure there's more songs than those four, but I have not been able to find where they might be. In any case, at some point I had access to the whole tape and took it over to Zientara's and chose those cuts and put them in--they weren't together in the concert the way they were on the record, they didn't necessarily fall together.

I thought it was a really, really strong EP, and it showed their dynamics and versatility on stage, the ability of Michael Reidy to go from a ballad to a harmony type thing to a hard rocking type thing. It also showcased Tommy Keene's Love is Love, which at that point in time was developing into the Razz's real tour de force. It became the ending piece later on, and they would do that at the very end of a set and expand on it.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Reviews: This record is currently AWOL. I don't remember being terribly impressed with it though. I'll find it eventually...

2004/06/04: Indeed, the record has been found and listened to again, and found wanting. Normally I'd say, "I bet this is great live," but since it's already live, I guess I can't. It's above average rocknroll, but it's missing the primal energy I normally associate with punk. The first Razz 7" had it, and I guess there's a little hint of it here, but not enough to hold my interest.

2004/07/18: Just to clarify, I do like this record, and I heartily recommend it to fans of DC rock, it just doesn't pack the kind of wallop that really gets me going.

2005/08/04: Having heard the whole concert this was taken from, I have to say what was cut out is much better than what was released. The concert as a whole is great fun...

Ian Lloyd: Goose Bumps, Third World Civilization

Two albums posted here from Ian Lloyd. I guess I am on some sort of Power Pop thing...Who knows...TWC is a vinyl rip from my collection. Goose Bumps is a cassette rip taped from vinyl, originally recorded from my buddy Sully. No worries...this sounds great! Taped on my world class Pioneer CT-F1000 3 head tape deck on a TDK SA-C90 tape and played back for ripping on my Nakamichi 3 head tape deck. The sound is perfect. Both rips are exceptional.

Ian Lloyd
Goose Bumps
Release Date: 1979
Label: Scotti Bros
Managed by Bud Prager in 1979 (the man who represented Foreigner, Deena Miller -- daughter of Rolling Stones producer Jimmy Miller -- Leslie West, and many others), the former singer for Stories was produced by a man instrumental in Aerosmith's comeback, the late Bruce Fairbairn. With help from members of the Cars, Foreigner, and former Aerosmith guitarist Jimmy Crespo, this album had all the elements for the breakthrough disc that Ian Lloyd deserved. "Slip Away" was written by Ric Ocasek and should have been a big Cars hit since it really didn't conquer radio on behalf of Lloyd. Ben Orr is on bass and backing vocals, Ric Ocasek pipes in on backing vocals and rhythm guitar, and Jimmy Crespo plays the very new wavey guitar -- it's Aerosmith meets the Cars with Stories lead vocalist! Russ Ballard's "First Heartbreak" sounds like a lost girl group classic with T.Rex overtones. A smart cover like the Bee Gees' "Holiday gets all synthed up, while the Zombies' "Time of the Season," always a welcome title, gets a respectable and unique reading by Stories former lead singer. "Open Soul Surgery" definitely goes the Foreigner route, though Lou Gramm and Mick Jones are on other tracks like "Love Stealer" and "She Broke Your Heart." Side one is very good, but side two fares even better, the title track, "Goose Bumps," with a solid riff and creepy vocal by the singer, and something even more key -- hooks different from the other 11 songs. There are substantial melodies all over this disc, solving the problem of his Polydor outing three years prior. Where the self-titled Ian Lloyd disc was mostly penned by the singer, Goose Bumps has a dazzling display of inviting and original tunes from all sorts of contributors. Ian Hunter and Corky Laing collaborate on "Easy Money" -- and this would've been great on a Mott the Hoople or Mountain disc, very different and distinctive, like when Hunter co-wrote "Goin' Through the Motions" for Blue Oyster Cult. "New City Lights" features Michael Brecker on tenor sax while Jim Vallance and Bryan Adams contribute the strong "I'm Ready." Paul DaVinci pens the final tune, "Love Is a Ship"; it is dreamy, another change of pace, and a superb conclusion to an album by a singer who gets help from some serious players, colors and flavors for his music that are more than worthwhile. Coming three years after his self-titled Polydor release, the 1976 disc which retained the services of Stories guitarist Steve Love and also contained performances by Mick Jones, this was the one after the transition album, the one that should have brought Ian Lloyd more hits like "I'm Coming Home," "Mammy Blue," and "Brother Louie." It made some noise but got lost in the rock & roll shuffle, however, Goose Bumps, with its red fingernails scraping across a chalk board cover (perhaps a little too punk for a pop artist), is more than just a solid outing from Ian Lloyd, it is an exemplary record and is worth repeated spins. Ian Lloyd
3WC (Third Wave Civilization)
Release Date: 1980
Label: Scotti Bros.

3WC is terrific, a smoother outing than the previous Goose Bumps with the singer and producer, Ian Lloyd and Bruce Fairbairn, respectively, seeming to be in sync, more comfortable with each other. "Straight From the Heart" was recorded three years before it became the breakout hit for the former lead singer of Sweeny Todd, a guy by the name of Bryan Adams, and this early version is an absolute revelation. What would have happened had the voice on the number one hit "Brother Louie" taken "Straight From the Heart" to the Top Ten first? Maybe it would have led to more hits for Ian Lloyd. Bryan Adams' songwriting partner, Jim Vallance, co-writes the title track with Ian Lloyd, and it is a great direction for this singer in search of a new hit. It is spacy, it is science fiction, it takes his Ric Ocasek-written track, "Slip Away," from the previous disc to the next level. It is simply a great piece of music. With Mick Jones of Foreigner, the brilliant Fairbairn, Loverboy's Paul Dean, and songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Jim Vallance, it is hard to imagine the former singer of Stories missing with this superlative effort. Foreigner's manager, Bud Prager, had the ear of the industry, and producer Fairbairn was a year away from his breakthrough hits with Loverboy. Much more refined than the excellent Goose Bumps album from 1979, that album had much potential but was all over the map. 3WC smooths things out with the pop flavors of Stories and that '80s sound which Bryan Adams made so popular. Lloyd's own songs, "Dedicated to You" and "Wanderers," are much more on target here as well, while he takes on covers of Gary Glitter's "Do You Wanna Touch Me" (which Tommy James did four years before this album), and the Supremes' "Stop! In the Name of Love." Both covers are fun, and they allow Lloyd the opportunity to go beyond the seriousness of the original tunes. The album is consistent with the tremendous reading of "Straight From the Heart," a Vallance/Adams original that works in "Lonely Nights" and an appealing combination of sounds which finally complement this valuable singer as perfectly as did the compositions of the Left Bank's Michael Browne. Innovative and carefully produced, it was just a couple of years before its time. Seek it out, hear some magic, and wonder what it takes to bring important music like this to the attention of the public. Joe Viglione, All Music Guide

Martha And The Muffins: Metro Music and Danseparc LP's

This post is two Martha and the Muffins Vinyl LP's, "Metro Music" and "Danseparc".

I looked around and it seems you can get some "best of" and retrospective type CD's out there, but not the whole albums. So here they are. CPR Live On E-Town

CPR: Crosby, Pevar & Raymond

CPR is a five-piece rock band established in 1997. David Crosby, Jeff Pevar and James Raymond are the namesakes of CPR. The trio has an amazing collective musical history. David Crosby is a legend having created or been a part of some of the most memorable music from the 60's and 70's. Jeff Pevar is a versatile guitarist well versed in rock, jazz and the blues. He has played on numerous projects and has worked with Jackson Browne, Ray Charles, Laura Nyro and James Taylor to name just a few of many. James Raymond is a musical director and well-respected keyboardist who has also worked with a variety of artists. CPR first toured as a band in early 1997.

I taped this from WRNR 103.1 FM Annapolis, MD on the 3rd of March 2000. It starts abruptly, as I probably stumbled on the show and grabbed a blank tape and started taping. As with most of my WRNR tapes it is recorded in mono due to the weakness of the radio station's signal. It's only about 20 minutes, but still sounds good and a real hard to find tid bit from CPR.

Cruzados: Debut LP and After Dark Vinyl Rip

I really don't know a lot about these guys. Back in the late 80's, I happened to be hanging around one evening and taped a KBFH show with these guys live. Over the years, I kept going back to that tape, and just really liked everything about it. Power pop vocals, guitars and just plane good rockin' tunes. Picked up a couple of LP's at the local used record store and really enjoyed those as well. Who are the Cruzados? Damifino....

What This Is All About

I've been collecting live music from various sources since the mid to late 70's. Radio shows, TV broadcasts, radio show pre-FM CD's and vinyl LP's and some trades. Most of the shows posted here, I recorded and ripped myself. I always had top of the line stereo equipment and cassette and open reel recorders for those on air broadcasts.

I've downloaded plenty of bootlegged concerts from various blogs. As a rule I will only post stuff from my collection and not what is already available out there.

I also post out of print CDs and LPs from my collection.
I will repost from my readers anything someone sends me as long as it is either out of print or something that's not from someone else's blog. If you want to share a link for a cool item on your blog, or someone else's, please feel free to post it in the comments........

Enjoy and please leave a comment and pass this blog along.
Can you believe that so many out there are starving for the old WHFS? Amazing!

If you leave a comment, how about using a nickname instead of Anonymous. At least make up something please. Thanks!
