Audio Rip From the 25th Montreux Music Festival

I'm not sure who aired this, but back in 1991 I taped this off the TV and this is an audio rip from that VHS HI-FI Tape. It's only 30 minutes in length, but the performance and sound is awesome.

Elton, Adams Unite On 'cmt Crossroads'
Publication: Billboard
Date: Saturday, April 20 2002

At 8 p.m. ET/PT May 26, CMT will air its much-anticipated (and
once-postponed) CMT Crossroads featuring a joint performance by Elton John and Ryan Adams. The rock-meets-country concert series has the two artists playing such songs as John's "Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters" from 1972's Honky Chateau and Adams' "Oh My Sweet Carolina" from 2000's Heartbreaker.

During the taping of the show—which includes interview and behind-the-scenes footage—John said, "What really attracted me to Ryan's music was Heartbreaker. I saw an incredible review in Billboard ["Ryan Adams' Healing 'Heartbreaker,' " Music to My Ears, Billboard, Nov. 4, 2000] by Timothy White, who's the editor, and I thought, 'I've gotta check this out.' And I bought it, and I was completely and utterly floored by the simplicity and beauty of it." So he sent Adams a note.

"For the [1970] Elton John album," John added, "I got a similar kind of thing from George Harrison, saying 'Congratulations, loved the record.' As All Things Must Pass was going down the chart, mine was going up. It's always stuck with me that if you ever hear something you like from someone new, you should make an effort to go out of your way." Later in the taping (done April 2 at Nashville's Grand Ole Opry House), John said songs such as "Carolina" inspired him "to go back to basics and do [Songs From the West Coast]."

By JOHN GEROME, Associated Press Writer
Fri Jan 6, 2:45 PM ET

Twenty years ago a lanky young country singer from Texas headed to Milwaukee to open a concert for a raspy-voiced blues rocker.

Lyle Lovett arrived a day early for the show with Bonnie Raitt and got a call in his hotel room.

"She and her road manager and the fellow playing bass guitar with her were all up in Bonnie's room playing cards, and they called me and said, `Hey, come on up. You want to play?'"

The two have been playing together ever since, even as their music and careers have veered in different directions.

They were in Nashville recently to tape an upcoming episode of the Country Music Television series "Crossroads," a show that pairs country singers with performers from other genres, usually rock and pop.

For Lovett, 48, and Raitt, 56, it was more a celebration of long roads than of crossroads.

"We've toured together many times with various bands and incarnations. We've seen each other through love affairs, breakups, many, many albums and here we are," Raitt reflected as they sat backstage.

[More:]

Indeed, both have had remarkable longevity — Raitt since 1971 and Lovett since 1986. While Raitt is grounded in rock and Lovett in country, each incorporates blues, gospel, jazz and folk into their music.

When they first met and began touring, Lovett had just released his self-titled debut album and was being promoted by MCA/Curb as a mainstream country singer. The album produced three top 20 singles, including "Cowboy Man."

It was the closest he would come to the mainstream. By his second album, 1988's "Pontiac," Lovett, who writes most of his own songs, was experimenting with a jazzier, big-band sound, and country radio began to lose interest.

Raitt, on the other hand, was intrigued.

"He's an absolute original," she said. "I love his sensibilities in terms of how unique a point of view he has as a writer. He naturally brings in so many elements of music that I cling to, like blues and gospel and his kind of country and Texas music."

Despite scant radio airplay, Lovett, whose songs possess a wry, offbeat sense of humor, has had gold records and won Grammys, including one for best country album for 1996's "The Road to Ensenada."

He became a celebrity, perhaps reluctantly, when he married actress Julia Roberts in 1993. They met on the set of director Robert Altman's 1992 film, "The Player," the first of several movie appearances for Lovett. The marriage lasted about two years and drew intense publicity. To this day, Lovett won't discuss it in interviews.

Ironically, as Lovett was moving away from the mainstream, Raitt was moving toward it. For much of the 1970s and '80s, Raitt, the daughter of the late Broadway singer John Raitt, interpreted the classic blues of musical heroes like Robert Johnson and Sippie Wallace as well as contemporary songwriters such as John Prine.

With her soulful voice and raw, bluesy guitar playing, she became a cult favorite. Her albums sold modestly and she had a hit in 1977 with a remake of Del Shannon's "Runaway."

"I was a huge fan of Bonnie's before I'd even dreamed I'd ever get to go out and really play anywhere besides just around my home," Lovett said. "She had that effortless, powerful voice and that searing slide guitar."

She also was active in environmental and social issues, such as stopping the war in Central America, apartheid in South Africa and the spread of nuclear energy.

But by the mid-1980s, while battling alcoholism and lackluster sales, Raitt lost her contract with Warner Brothers Records.

She struggled a few years and sobered up before signing with Capitol Records for 1989's aptly titled "Nick of Time." The album teamed her with producer Don Was and took a more polished, pop sound. It shot to No. 1 and became the first in a string of hugely successful albums for her, yielding hits such as "Thing Called Love," "Something to Talk About," and the ballad "I Can't Make You Love Me."

In 1991 she married actor Michael O'Keefe; they divorced in 1999. She also won several Grammys and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000.

As her commercial streak waned, Raitt continued releasing albums and lending her music to social causes. She and Lovett teamed in 2002 for her "Green Highway" tour to promote alternative energy sources. Lovett had to perform shows with a cast on his leg after being trampled by a bull on the family homestead where he still lives.

When CMT asked Raitt about doing "Crossroads" she didn't have to think much about a musical partner. (The show airs Feb. 11 at 9 p.m. EST.)

"Of all the people I would have chosen, he was the only one I felt a connection with," Raitt said.

This is a vinyl rip of my Buddy Wizz's Black Sabbath Vinyl Bootleg "Gr'ndlepole". I recorded this a couple of years ago from his LP and there is virtually no information on it. The weird title means nothing to me, and I could find nothing on the web for it's meaning. It is from the early 70's and the sound is raw and excellent condsidering the era.

Eight Prefab Sprout CD Singles

Here I am sharing my collection of Prefab Sprout CD Singles. Eight discs in all containg some unreleased and alternative and extended versions. 28 Tunes altogether.

This is how I discovered Prefab Sprout. I was totally into Thomas Dolby, Aliens Ate My Buick album and was thirsty for more. So I called Weasel at WHFS in Annapolis, MD USA(an extermely knowledgeable DJ) and asked him what else Mr Dolby was involved in. He hung up on me stating, he was running a contest and didn't have time. I was pissed, so when the contest was over, I called back and Weasel barked out something about Thomas Dolby produced some Prefab Sprout albums...WTF? Luckily he was right and I went out and purchased everything I could from Prefab Sprout.

THREE WHFS TAPES FROM 1977, 1980, 1983

The responses to my WHFS postings have been, quite frankly, very suprising. Instead of picking and choosing, I am going to post what I have from beginning to end, good or great, and in between. This post is for 3 tapes from WHFS. The 1977 and 1980 tape may dissapoint a bit because I ommited all DJ chatter and contains music only. In those days I wasn't thinking of preserving anything for nosatalgic reasons, just wanted some variety music to listen to in my VW van. The 1983 tape has commercials, news and PSAs. An interesting news item broadcast from UPI here is a piece on the future of banking, that one day believe it or not we could pay our bills from home on a personal computer. Pretty cool.

Lone Justice "Cowpunk Adolescense", The Early Sessions and "Live At The Paradise Theatre 1985"

The great pics below were purchased off of e-bay several years back.

Here are a couple of Lone Justice CD's I received from the Little Diva fan website in the late 90's.
"Cowpunk Adolescense":

Early Demos 1983-84 Fan CD, distributed by the Little Diva Mailing List in the late 1990s. "The true sound of Lone Justice - these demos, some of which were probably recorded in late 1983 just after the band signed to Geffen, are what LJ were really about. They are obviously not demos for the debut album as they have a raw, unpolished quality that was (to a certain extent) expunged when recording for the album commenced in mid-1984 and the big-names were brought in to commercialise the band." WHFS FROM APRIL 1985 SHARED BY JOSH

Here is another WHFS Post shared again by Josh! Looks like an awesome set list for sure. I do remember the late Friday afternoon Party weekend rundown, but can't recall the artist Josh is looking for. If I recall I'll post it. In the meantime, can any HFS Heads help us out?
Having Josh share his HFS tapes form 1985 is a real treat for me. One of the reasons that I have posted so many from 1983, is (1) it was announced that WHFS @ 102.3FM would be closing down. And (2) I had a job with days off during the week, and would do some excellent taping in the morning and afternoon. In 1985 WHFS was now @ 99.1FM and broadcasting with 50k watts. That same year, I got a job working M-F 8:30-5:00 and that was it for me taping in the afternoon. I did have a portable Sony Boom box and listened to WHFS all day everyday. It wasn't surprising how many people I worked with never heard the station before. I did do a tape or two on my portable but the quality is not so hot.

Below is the e-mail from Josh:

"Some more HFS tunes from Spring '85 and another request for help

Weasel and Bob had a weekend set they played every Friday. It was:

Dave Edmunds-Here Comes the Weekend
Joe King Carrasco--Party Party Weekend

And a third tune:

Well I go to school from 9 to 3
Every chance I get
They try to teach me the golden rule
But I ain't learned nothing yet

Thanks God it's Friday
Lord, I'm here to say
Thank God it's Friday
Lord, it's been a long long day

WHO DOES THIS?

Also on this:
Blondie
Love Tractor
Thomas Dolby
Malcolm Mclaren
Lowell George
Wall of Voodoo
Talking Heads
The DBs
The Monks
Blotto
The Elevators
Joe King Carrasco
Martha and the Muffins
B-52s
Julie Brown
Aztec Camera
Trio
Lou Reed
Nick Lowe
The Bangles
The Who
Tears for Fears
T-Bone Burnett

Enjoy, more to come."

Thanks again Josh. This is a real treat for me and anyone else out there that remembers quality radio.

WGTB HARD IMPLOSION AND FUSION FROM 1978

This is the last of my WGBT tapes. One is an hour long Ampex open reel tape of the Hard Implosion Show from 1978. An hour of 70's hard rock-n-roll. The other is one side of a TDK D60 tape of fusion featuring Pat Metheny, Keith Jarret, John Ambercrombie, Brand X along with a rant about the then current Montgomery County police chief. Priceless. The 2nd cassette is one side of a TDK D60 tape with the following: Trooper, Gale Force, Noel Redding Band, Foreigner, Rory Gallegher

If only I had the funds to buy more blank tapes. But my money was at a premium in those days, so didn't tape as much as I would have wanted to. Whatever, it is what is.
Hope someone out there finds these archives interesting and will give them a listen and leave some feedback here.

Rock 103 WXZL Annapolis Maryland, 9 Ninety Minute Tapes from 1994

WXZL was a hard rock-progressive station in Annapolis that was taken over by WRNR. WRNR Owner Jake Einstein was the owner of WHFS back in the day. Too bad I didn't know about this station sooner, before WRNR took over. I have several tapes, 9 of them too be shared in this post. Most are in mono because the signal was so weak. But this was an awesome radio station. Long setlists and progressive in nature, leaning toward hard rock. As mentioned before, I taped these tapes, and always used either my Pioneer CT-F1000 3 head deck, or later with my Nakamichi CR1A 3 head deck. So they sound great. The fact most of these are in mono, really takes nothing away from the great music. Just elimintes the hissing due to the weak signal. Pretty cool station. Hope to hear some feedback on this post. Standy by soon for more WHFS, WGTB, and WRNR.

WGTB ROCK AND ROLL MARATHON AUGUST 1978

This post is from my WGTB open reel tape from August of 1978. WGTB used to do all night hard rock and roll shows. Everything from AC-DC to Rush to Van Halen and everything in between. Of course it's all mid 70's hard rock. And all night. Damn shame I only taped a handful of these shows. But what I have kicks ass! So if you're a fan of 70's hard rock and underground radio then download this puppy. One of the interesting parts of the tape is a couple of listeners call in around 2:00-3:00 in the morning. Obviously waisted. Van Halen had opened for Ted Nugent that night at the Capital Center in Landover, MD. The comments on Van Halen,(in their infancy)and Ted Nugent are priceless!
WGTB was a student-run radio station at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. WGTB was founded as the georgetown broadcasting system in 1946 by Rev. Francis Hayden, S.J. In its earliest incarnation, the station was primarily an outlet for news and public affairs programming. The station developed “The Georgetown Forum” during the 1950s which became famous for hosting notable public figures and scholars to discuss the topics of the day. At that time, the studio was located in Healy Hall, and it would often receive complaints from the physics department, also located at the time in Healy Hall, that radio waves coming from the studio were interfering with their instruments.
By the 1970s, the station had shifted course to music-oriented programming. WGTB became well-known throughout the Washington, DC metro area as a voice for new music, and more notably as a voice for the political left, broadcasting anti-war programming across a 60-mile radius. Maintaining a political voice for dissidents of the day established the station as a mainstay among the left-wing community. This stance was the source of considerable friction between the station and the university administration, resulting in several shutdowns, and eventually the end of WGTB. In 1979, to mark the creation of the University of the District of Columbia (UDC), Georgetown donated WGTB’s 6700 watt signal (90.1 FM) to UDC. This signal was later sold by UDC in 1997 to C-SPAN for $25 million.
It's been said that the Pope himself ordered the radio station shut down due to Gay programming and public service announcements telling listners where they might be able to obtain abortions. Not good.

WHFS DJ WEASEL THURSDAY APRIL 28 1983

This is a an awesome WHFS Open Reel Tape of WHFS DJ Weasel, taped Thursday evening on the 28th of April 1983. All music, no commercials, PSA's or news breaks. Just Weasel commenting and reading his set list, that can be as long as 40 minutes or so. Never gonna see that again in commercial radio. I recorded these 2 CD's on my Pioneer CD recorder and then ripped to my hard drive. It's two single files of each CD. Sound is excellent and so is the show.

Johnny and the Headhunters are known as a powerful Rock-a-Billy and Blues band. John Tickton, an excellent guitarist and vocalist has lead the band since the early days. Bass player Brian Mcgregor and drummer Brooks Tegler complete the trio's first rate sound . The Headhunters have performed for 20 years in and around the Nation’s Capital, along the whole East Coast as well as popular in the club scene for many years in Manhattan especially at "Manny's Car Wash," a favorite Upper East Side blues hot spot. The band has played many shows with Pete Ragusa, drummer and Grammy nominated producer for the internationally acclaimed Nighthawks. Pete has played on several of Johnny’s personal albums and also produced the Headhunters release titled Watch Yourself. Truckin’ the Blues, the band’s latest release, was produced by Billy Hancock and features Bruce Ewan on harmonica and Joe Stanley and Chris Watling on saxophones. I bought the self titled LP at the Record and Tape Exchange in College Park, MD and the Cassette I bought at one of Johnny's shows at Armadillo's in Annapolis, MD back in 1994 I believe. Just another cool artist from the DC area that plays straight up Roots Rock, Rock-n-Roll.
Both albums were recorded to one CD and then ripped to my hard drive.

The Escape Club Live from the Paradise Theater Boston- King Biscuit

I love this band. Got this off of a WWDC DC-101 radio broadcast on 03-31-1989. It sounds great and the show kicks butt! This show was recorded while the band was in their performing and recording prime. They play with incredible passion and seem genuinely grateful that American new wave audiences had so warmly accepted them. Steel offers an outstanding vocal performance and should have had the goods to be a successful solo artist after Escape Club disbanded.

01 So Far Away
02 Shake For The Sheik
03 Jealousy
04 Walking Through Walls
05 Wild Wild West

Wild Wild West Lyrics

Forty seven dead beats living in the back street
north east west south all in the same house
sitting in a back room waiting for the big boom
I'm in a bedroom waitng for my baby

CHORUS:
She's so mean but I don't care
I love her eyes and her wild wild hair
dance to the beat that we love best
heading for the nineties
living in the wild wild west
the wild wild west

Mandy's in the backroom handing out valium
sheriff's on the airwaves talking to the D.J.'s
Forty seven heartbeats beating like a drum
got to live it up live it up
Ronnie's got a new gun

CHORUS

Now put your flags in the air and march them up and down
you can live it up live it up all over the town
and turn to the left, turn to the right
I don't care as long as she comes tonight

Wish I had This CD but a broadcast tape will have to do for now.

WHFS from March 85 shared by Josh

Josh sent me a comment and mentioned that he had some WHFS he wanted to share. WHFS had moved to Annapolis by this time. So here it is with his comments from the e-mail. Thank Josh for sharing! Can anyone help him with his artist search?

"Thanks for the tips. They helped get me going. I sent the first four files, taken from two cassettes. Let me know if you receive them.

A few words on the process. I put these together by doing a series of random tapes and pulling off the bits I liked from those tapes. I decided to sacrifice quality by going down another generation to get exactly the music I wanted. I also include random PSAs and other debris. Somewhere on Tape 2 there's a DJ messing up on the concert calendar, accompanied by Shadowfax. Tape 2 is one of my favorites, with Brian Eno, Bonzo Goes to Washington, obscure Stranglers, etc. More to come.

I don't always capture the song titles and artists, which is a bit frustrating. I've been trying to find MP3s of my favorites, mostly with good success. However, there is one song on tape 1 that you might be able to help me with. Here are some lyrics

Saw you having breakfast
Down at the campus cafe
You were there with your new man
Babe I didn't know quite what to say

Anyway, when you hear it, let me know if you recognize the tune or the artist. I've Googled, I've checked Allmusic.com, I've tried the message boards on New Wave Outpost and had no luck.

Anyway, thanks again for your blog. I recognize the many hours of work that went into it.

Josh".

Two Jayhawks Boot Leg CD's "Six Pack Songs and "Poised For Stardom"

I got both of these CD's off of e-Bay 4 or 5 years ago. They were originaly MP3 based I'm sure, because each CD had a gap between each song. I paid way too much for them, considering that today you can probably find them on blogs like this one for free. Both the CD's have the Jayhawks in fine form and some OF the tunes really rock out, and of course, as always, a couple of nice cover tunes.

Three CD, Live Jayhawks Tracks Collection, Boots, Radio,

I debated a while on whether I should post this or not. But I figured any serious Jayhawks fan would really enjoy this. The source of these 3 CD's worth of live tracks were all gathered over several years from Kazzaa, Limewire and Napster. Probably a year or two or three worth of searching and downloading. The quality varies but none sound like crap, like most did that I checked out and then just deleted. I burned 3 CD's worth of these tunes, then deleted the files. This all before cheap disk drives and I was more concerened with saving disk space then preserving ID Tags. The dates and venues are what came with the ID Tags. No way to verify anything. Bottom line is most of these tunes sounds very good and some are cover songs you won't find very easily.

edit: 12-11
I want to apologize...I have been listening to this in my truck recently, and their are a couple of tunes in this folder that have that aggravating snap and popping sound. So fair warning. I'll leave this here to share, but like I said a couple of tunes in this collection are crappy. That's why I quit downloading from Napster and Kazaa anyways. It was a real crap shoot.

WHFS DAVID 02-25-1983 3 HOUR OPEN REEL TAPE

This post is from another tape in my open reel collection of WHFS DJ David. Originally recorded to CD then ripped to my hard drive. It is split into 3 folders, 3hours long, taped in the afternoon of Friday, Feb 25 1983. The U2 War album was being released that day or there abouts. Some great music from the day. It's a shame the sorry state of radio in the U.S. today.

Old 97's Live DVD Audio Rip

This post is an audio rip from my Old 97's Live DVD.
Old 97's Live underscores how one of the premier alt-country, No Depression bands of the 1990s has become a truly eclectic, power pop quartet with a gritty folk heart and penchant for lyrical mischief. ("You're a bottle cap away / From pushing me too far.") Drawing from each of their six albums, Old 97's brought the crowd at Santa Monica's Troubadour club to visible delirium at a March 2004 show; that concert appears here. Sounding very much like hard-charging heirs to vast legacies of the Kinks, Hank Williams, the Replacements, Johnny Cash, REM, and even White Album-era Beatles, singer-songwriter-guitarist Rhett Miller, drummer Philip Peeples, lead guitarist Ken Bethea, and bassist Murry Hammond paint loss with rootsy-poetic authenticity while blowing gloom apart with punky exhilaration. The many highlights include the agreeable pop plaint "Rollerskate Skinny" ("I believe in love / But it don't believe in me"), the anthemic anti-anthem "Friends Forever," and Hammond's moving, acoustic solo on "Valentine." --Tom Keogh

1 – Just Like California
2 – King Of The World
3 – Weightless

John Mayer Live From PBS's Soundstage Audio Rip

I know what a lot of you are thinking, WTF? John Mayer? Sure, he seems to be a hit with the teeny bopper and Y generation chicks and they drool over him. But this kid's got substance. Very talented and and all around fine musician and singer. And if Buddy Guy can give this dude a thumbs up so can I. Anyway, here is some live John Mayer that doesn't have the rediculous screaming that you hear way too much of from the "Any Given Thursday" live CD. The jams with Buddy Guy are exceptional!
I added bonus tracks to the file from "Acoustic Session VH1 Vspot" and a tune from Eric Claptons Guitar Roads Festival DVD.

From the PBS Soundstage Web Page:

Part 1 - Premiering on PBS July 7, 2005

John Mayer has become an emerging superstar without conforming to any single genre – sometimes bluesy, sometimes pop, sometimes rock, but always excellent. Writing incredible songs that appeal to a wide audience, he provides that rare common ground among listeners of all ages. With fan favorites like “No Such Thing,” “Why Georgia” and “Bigger than my Body,” Mayer rolls out nothing but the best for this Soundstage audience. Mayer has always had a special relationship with the blues, and he can count one of its greatest practitioners as a fan. In the first episode of this two-part Soundstage, the legendary Buddy Guy surprises viewers by joining Mayer midway through “Come Back To Bed,” and remains for and extended jam on “Damn Right I Got The Blues.” Other Mayer hits, including the blockbuster “Your Body Is a Wonderland,” also define this set.

Part 2 - Premiering on PBS July 14, 2005

John Mayer’s convincing vocals, guitar virtuosity and compelling songwriting has earned him the respect of his contemporaries as well as significant radio airplay and a solid fan following. On the second part of this Soundstage episode, John Mayer continues his set with favorites “My Stupid Mouth,” “Neon” and the Grammy Award-winning Song of the Year “Daughters.” Towards the end of this episode Buddy Guy returns to end this show on a high note (literally). This time the roles are reversed as Buddy takes the lead on the classic blues “Feels Like Rain,” while Mayer steps back on guitar and lets the teacher do his thing.

Beth Hart Live At The Paradiso DVD Audio Rip

This is an audio rip from my Beth Hart Live At The Paradiso DVD. This is one crazy chick but she rocks! Beth Hart has all the grit and soul of the late Janis Joplin and Robert Plant without ever sounding as though she is trying to imitate them. Her voice is her own and it is one very impressive instrument. Her repetoire runs the gamut from blues to gut bucket rock. She easily stands shoulder to shoulder with any male singer without ever losing her femininity. Add to that a tight, rocking band that is just having a ball and you've got one hell of a combo. If you don't think girls can rock then check out Beth's covers of Zep's "Whole Lotta Love" and Humble Pie's "I Don't Need No Doctor". Her own tunes are great and are never overshadowed by these perennial favourites.
Her slower, more soulful tunes never lose the intensity she is able to build during more raucous numbers. Quite the opposite, when she settles down at her piano alone her soul pours out with every syllable. This is a lady who can sing about having been to Hell and back with beautifully crafted melody and heartfelt vocals that make you believe her every word.
The above verbage unashamedly ripped off of someone elses review from Amazon.

Root Boy Slim: Don't Let This Happen to You Vinyl LP Rip

Holy Crap! I can hardly believe the response to my earlier Root Boy post. A lot of downloads and feedback. Looks like a lot of folks from the Balt-DC area have found my blog and have made several comments on my WHFS posts and local music scene of the late 70's and early 80's. You don't have to be from 'round here to appreciate Root Boy Slim! Here is a CD rip of my Vinyl LP of Root Boy's "Don't Let This Happen to You".
Included in this file is the A and B side of the 45, "Do The Meltdown" and "Graveyard of Losers". This 45 is courtesy of Mark, a fellow Root fan that sent the files for the 45 single. Thanks Mark!

Foster "Ken" Mackenzie III (Root Boy Slim) was born on July 9, 1945 in Asheville, NC. His father was a golf course architect and he grew up in Washington, DC Root Boy attended a number of private schools, including Sidwell Friends and the St. James School in Hagerstown. Considered a tortured genius by some, Root Boy was a commanding, compelling presence in the DC music scene in the late 1970s and 80s. His songs were wry commentaries on the absurdities of life, including his own.

Root Boy attended Yale University, where he and George W. Bush belonged to the same fraternity (DKE, "the Dekes"), although Bush was one year behind him. Root Boy was the frat's social director, and he would later tell people that the future president showed up at all the parties. Root Boy said that he went back to visit one year and Bush, now president of the fraternity, threw him off the premises for smoking a joint on the frat house's front steps.

At Yale, Root Boy made friends with fraternity brother Bob Greenlee, who was captain of the Yale football team. They formed a band called "The Young Prince La La, Percy Uptight and the Midnight Creepers." It is said that the band never played the same venue twice.

Over the next decade, Root Boy attended architecture school, studied city planning, and traveled. He was arrested in Jamaica, then again in Jacksonville, and in 1969 jumped over the White House fence, landing him in St. Elizabeth's for observation. He would later write songs about these events and, while living in Florida, enlisted his friend Bob Greenlee to record some of them. The band moved to DC in the spring of 1977, adding Ron Holloway on saxophone and the backup singers The Rootettes.

The band was called Root Boy Slim and the Sex Change Band, and the combination of excellent musicians, clever and unusual hook-ridden songs, along with Root Boy's charismatic, outlandish persona propelled it to huge local success in the late 1970s and 1980s. His subjects included substance abuse, mental instability and politics, with song titles such as "Too Sick To Reggae," "Dozin' and Droolin," I'm Not Too Old for You," and "Boogie Til You Puke." Although he made fun of his vices, Root Boy used drugs and alcohol to excess. His shows were sometimes erratic, but they were always funny and outrageous. Root Boy would wear flowing capes, leopard outfits and his trademark ROOT glasses, and he would order his backup singers, the Rootettes, to get down on the filthy stage floor with him as he sang "Do the Gator." His performances at venues such as The Psychedelly in Bethesda, the Cellar Door and Bayou in Georgetown, and the Varsity Grill in College Park were always packed, and staffers from the Carter White House were among his following. He was even invited to visit the White House by Carter's appointment secretary. Root Boy approved of the Carter administration, but when President Reagan was elected, he wrote "Cowboy in the Sun Too Long" and "Rich, White, Republican."

In 1977, a demo album, including "Boogie Til You Puke" and "You Broke My Mood Ring," produced by local entrepreneurs Joe Lee and Dick Bangham (who later became a Rootette) was unofficially rated "the most requested album of the year" on WHFS. This caught the attention of Steely Dan's Donald Fagen and producer Gary Katz, who took the act to Warner Brothers Records. Root Boy inked a quarter of a million dollar deal with the record company and released his debut album in 1978 with all of the songs included on the original demo. An appearance in "Mr. Mike's Mondo Video," produced by Saturday Night Live head writer Michael O'Donahue, might have put him over the top but the special was rejected for air by then NBC-president Fred Silverman. The album didn't meet expectations and the label bought out the remainder of the contract. The next year, Root's second album, Zoom, was released on A&M's IRS/Illegal Records. The band toured England and Scotland, opening for Ian Dury and the Blockheads and making headlines in the British musical press as well as in Rolling Stone in the US. Marshall Keys joined the band in 1978 when guitarist Stuart Smith decided against doing the Dury tour. Root Boy went on to record four more albums with Greenlee and Lancaster on smaller labels, two of them Greenlee's King Snake Records.

For the last fifteen years of his life, Root Boy continued to write songs and perform with a series of bands made up of many of DC's most talented players, including Tommy Lepson. His last production was a moving video of his song "Hey Mr. President", a call to help the homeless, released during the Presidential campaign in 1992. The Sex Change Band reunited in 1993 for an East coast tour. Worn down by his inner demons and declining health, Root Boy died in his sleep just four days after the band's kickoff show at The Junkyard in Orlando, one month before his 48th birthday.

WHFS Weasel 05-12-1982 Ninety Minute Cassette

I have in my collection hundreds of hours of WHFS from the late 70's to the late 90's. Some were taped on cassette and some were taped on my Akai Open Reel tape deck and some were aquired in a trade. This tape is from Wed, May 12 1982 of DJ Weasel playing some classic music from that time period. This one tape shows just how awesome this radio station was. Just look at this line up! Each file is a set of tunes with commercials omitted. In retrospect it would be interesting to have heard the commercials today, but back then, I just wanted the music. It's definetly a good road trip tape. Sound quality is very good but not the best. It was taped on a BASF Performance C90 tape. Dolby B on for recording, and left off when I ripped the tape to my hard drive. Back off on the treble and you should be fine.

01 Johnny Seaton, The Clash, Pandoras, Paul Weller, The Beatles

Til' Tuesday Live- Westwood One Vinyl LP Rip

Here is a post of an audio rip from the CD that I recorded of my Til' Tuesday Live- Westwood One Vinyl LP.
I purchased this LP years ago at the Record and Tape Exchange in College Park, MD. I bought over 500 vinyl LP's from this guy. Sad to say he is out of business. If only he had held out long enough to get into selling his stuff on line.
I looked for my LP today for more information, but can't find it. Anyway, this is a pretty good show from Aimee Mann and company.

Cassette Compilation 1988 10-25-1988

Thought I would throw in a cassette compilation from my 125 mix tapes that I ripped to my hard drive. Took me 6 month's to get these tapes ripped. They begin in the late 70's and end in the late 90's when I finally put a CD player in my van. Here's a good one from 1988.

01 Paul Carrack, One Good Reason (Instrumental)
02 Robert Palmer, Simply Irrisistable (Instrumental Version)
03 Yes, Big Generator
04 Jason and the Scorchers, When It All Comes Crashing Down
05 Brian Setzer, When The Sky Comes Tumbling Down
06 Stephen Stills, Right By You
07 Johnny Seaton, Reaction
08 Bonnie Raitt, I Get Excited
09 T-Birds, Wasted Tears
10 SRV
11 Jeff Healey, My Little Girl

What This Is All About

I've been collecting live music from various sources since the mid to late 70's. Radio shows, TV broadcasts, radio show pre-FM CD's and vinyl LP's and some trades. Most of the shows posted here, I recorded and ripped myself. I always had top of the line stereo equipment and cassette and open reel recorders for those on air broadcasts.

I've downloaded plenty of bootlegged concerts from various blogs. As a rule I will only post stuff from my collection and not what is already available out there.

I also post out of print CDs and LPs from my collection.
I will repost from my readers anything someone sends me as long as it is either out of print or something that's not from someone else's blog. If you want to share a link for a cool item on your blog, or someone else's, please feel free to post it in the comments........

Enjoy and please leave a comment and pass this blog along.
Can you believe that so many out there are starving for the old WHFS? Amazing!

If you leave a comment, how about using a nickname instead of Anonymous. At least make up something please. Thanks!
